I was messing around with 'date' at home lately and came up with the
following messages.....they seemed a little bizarre!
[stardestroyer][andrew] ~ 1:06:12 >cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.2.7 ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version egcs-2.90.29 980515
(egcs-1.0.3 release)) #1 Thu Apr 29 21:36:51 IST 1999

Thu May 13 01:06:21 IST 1999
[stardestroyer][andrew] ~ 1:06:21 >date --date yesterday
Thu May 13 01:07:26 IST 1999
[stardestroyer][andrew] ~ 1:06:26 >date --date "1 day ago"
Wed May 12 01:06:30 IST 1999
[stardestroyer][andrew] ~ 1:06:30 >date --version date
(GNU sh-utils) 1.16
[stardestroyer][andrew] ~ 1:06:33 >
Anybody else have the same kind of output? - It doesn't bother me much, as
I don't actually try to find yesterdays date, but the output puzzled me!

Yes, that's it. There are different types of that card available. You
probably have one that works with 16 bit if you have less than (I think it
was) 14 MB of memory. These different types are well documented in the
Cirrus X11 Readme file. I've had the same type and upgraded the memory to 16
MB so that I couldn't use the 16 bpp mode anymore but I managed to exchange
cards with somebody else who now uses it for Win 3.11.

I had the same problem.
Think I've solved by logging in as root@<myhostname> in stead of only
root.
After that I immediatly created another superuser and everything is fine
now.
Do read the manual for creating users and privileges.

Erm, if you don't understand something, writing the documentation for it isn't
likely to result in anything useful. I was going to say that that's what
happened, but it didn't -- it was written for people who already understand
but who just need a tiny reminder occasionally.
Somebody else mentioned the goodness of somebody's man intro facility. Just
tried it. First good belly laugh of the day -- much thanks!

Yeah, but so many trees have already died needlessly. The "command --help"
structure (is this universal?) is better in many ways than the man pages; it's
shorter and gives you a hint about what you might want to look for.
Just tried info -- which I have fallen into by accident upon occasion. Spent
a few minutes learning that delete means page up (I NEVER trust the delete key
to do anything I want done, this makes me very uneasy) and a very few other
things. Have hyperlinks made us too impatient? I really don't want to learn
a new word processor in order find out more information about useful commands.

Yes, providing there is somebody around you can afflict with questions.
Imagine you come upon a computer screen -- the first time you have ever seen
such a thing -- with a nice helpful C:\> on the screen. What do you do? All
you can do is hit essentially random keys until something gives you some
useful information. Not an efficient process.

Of course, you know that Lilo can write to a partition and just use the
active partition thing that DOS does.
Mind you, changing the active partition is a bit more of a pain than
just typing the OS/kernel label you want at the boot prompt....

I had this problem under RedHat 5.2, but the installation from the
RedHat 6 distribution seems to work fine for me.
I did have a wierd problem yesterday while NetScape was up and running,
though - I was changing GNOME's background and after a while the system
locked up (very slowly locked up). Did the same thing through
Englightenment's config, though, and didn't seem to have a problem.
Though now that I think about it, netscape wasn't running when I did the
second time.
I wonder if maybe there's a memory leak in 4.51...?

No, I have not recompiled the kernel lately. I've never

Thanks. /proc/cpuinfo has two entries, one for CPU 0 and one for CPU 12.
I guess the Powers That Be decided "200%" CPU usage had to be changed. It
all makes sense now.
Out of curiosity, is there any reason for calling one CPU 0 and the other

xosview isn't on my system.

It is actually not that hard. There are many good websites describing
similiar setups.

The server does not provide Internet access to the clients.
Perhaps it should. As was pointed out you do want to firewall your
internal lan.
I have the same deal (cable modem, linux box, NT workstation clients)
The linux box provides internet access to the clients (linux box is
running a caching name server, I point NT's DNS and default gateway to
the linux box. bam, I am on the net)

you might want to disable them from the /etc/inetd.conf to prevent
them from being exploited.

(lets not have the arguement here about this OK??)
It appears that @home's preferred method is DHCP, however, some cable
companies (down to the district level) have some flexibility.
You should be prepaired to use DHCP (either now or in the future) but
it is possible you will get a static IP.
You need to be careful about what version of DHCPCD you use. I think
(correct me if I am wrong) 0.7 was for 2.0.x kernels.

If you are using syslinux, type at the prompt. If you are using LILO,
press space and you'll get a prompt. You need to type something like
kernel-name single
where "kernel-name" may well be "linux" or "vmlinuz". This boots you in
