Your sarcasm detector is disconnected, has fallen down in a crack in
the floor and is utterly broken. If you want to find it again, I
recommend reading the post you were replying to loud a few times. I
am confident that it will still throb as much as to make the relevant
floor boards creak. Get it out, repair it, and be more careful with

Hello ,
I am runing Linux Redhat 5.1 and Kernel upgraded to 2.2.4
I have the printer HPDeskjet870Cxi, and i had it working with the driver
HPLaserjet under X11, and
with the Deskjet500 driver under console mode.
The only problem (wich i had noticed too under windows when i had the
wrong driver) is:
I can't print below 3cm before the bottom: i-e there is a 3cm large
bottom margin; whatever i try to change it.
If you had your 870 working well, plz tell me how.
Thanx

Use "make bzdisk" instead, it does neat file compression things.

Keeping up on what the kernel hackers are doing is a full time job! It's not
entirely appropos to your question, but in the Linux source tree there is a
"Documentation" directory. There you may read the file named "Changes" to find
out some stuff...

I've configured Kerneld to dial on demand, but now when there is a request
for name solving on the local intranet (I've got a linux box doing file
server (samba), mail server an gateway to the internet and two machines
running win98) my linux box dials up to use my ISP DNS (even when logging
in from win98 machines), I believe that the problem is that I don't have a
DNS of my one.
Can any one help me on installing a DNS in my linux box or is there another
way of dialing on demand ?
Thanks in advance.

Look on page-262, and page-266 of the SuSE Linux 6.1 manual:
"For SuSE customers with ISA sound cards, we included a copy of
the OSS v3.8.1 driver (package oss, series pay). This driver is
free of charge, if you own SuSE Linux 6.1 ... ."
Note: series pay
...
"Please make sure that you treat OSS Version 3.8.1 as a commercial
product. OSS 3.8.1z is provided to you for free as owner of the
full version of SuSE Linux 6.1, however just like any other commercial
program, you are restricted from freely using it on additional
systems. ... ."
This language seems clear to me. I presume that if you get Linux
6.1 via ftp the commercial product(s) are *not* included.

Sorry for the most basic question, but I've got apache/php running and
all HTML and PHP files under HTDocs are set as read-only. How can I
change them to be read/write? Is this part of chmod? If so, what's
the command line as I can't find any reference.
Also, is there a reason these are set to read-only? Will I be opening
a potential security hole by making these files and sub-directories
writeable?
I just want to be able to edit the files via the network without having
to FTP, etc. Thanks! Again, sorry for the basic question.

Hallo Everybody,
I'm just started to learn about Linux and LRP. But I've got the problem
that I can get connection with my network. The two NIC (longshine ethernet
ISA cards,
I also tried with 3Com 3C509B)are configurated to different IO addresses and
IRQ's.
I also downloaded a module that is for Ethernet cards.
When I start LRP, the following massage is send to me:
lib/modules/card1/card2 does not exist.
SIOSCIFADDR: operation not supported by device
SIOCSIFNETMASK:operation not supported by device
SIOCSIFBRDADDR:operation not supported by device
etho: unknown interface
eth1: unknown interface
Does anybody know what my problem is and how I can solve it.
Thanks in advance

Hi There,
I'm wondering if a Linux RAS server can be configured to authenticate dial-in
users to an NT Domain.
Basically, what i am trying to do is emulate an NT RAS server, where the user
only has to use one username and password to login to our NT Network. I would
like to do this because i am sure that our current RAS hardware would be much
more efficient under Linux than with it's current NT Setup.
Would Samba, in combination with mgetty, or any other tools allow this?

I added a file-cache to thttpd (its structure was such that

Subject: Re: Killing Rouge Processes?
Take a look at the man pages for kill and killall. As for why some are
still running it could be a couple of things. The process may not be
accepting the terminate request in which case you can force it by using:
$ kill -9 PID
Some of the processes may be initialized to respawn in the inittab. In
this case if you kill it will automatically start up again. Take a look
at /etc/inittab to see which processes respawn. However, don't change a
process to not respawn unless you are sure that you know what you are
doing. These processes respawn because you generally need them for your
system to run normally.

As long as you're the only user, you can set Sendmail to masquerade your
mail domainname.
First of all - make a new user account for yourself, using your mail
username as the account's user name. (That would be "holloway", right?)
> Why is it so freakin difficult to find any doc dealing with this?!!!!

> system, should I?
As root, edit the sendmail.cf file, and set the following parameters.
# who I masquerade as (null for no masquerading) (see also $=M)
DMconcentric.net
Djconscentric.net
Now, sendmail should disguise all mail from you as [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I also added the following to my /usr/lib/pine
to make sure pine also use your official emailadresse. Not sure if this
is mandatory, but what the hell...
# Sets domain part of From: and local addresses in outgoing mail.
user-domain=concentric.net
One more thing about sendmail.cf - if you are on a dialup line. Default
sendmail will try to connect to each SMTP server you send mail to. This
can take some time.
The best way, is to let your sendmail daemon send all its mail through your
ISP's SMTP server. This is called "mail relaying".
Edit the following parameter in sendmail.cf
# "Smart" relay host (may be null)
DS<your.isp's.smtp.server.com>
> Do I need sendmail? If I get rid of it Pine should be able to configure
> the headers shouldn't it? If I don't need sendmail how do I uninstall it?
Well, not really, but if it's up and running already, why not...
On the other hand - if you're connected with a 24h access line, you should
perhaps disable it, for security purposes, if you're already using another
SMTP server elsewhere. Newer versions of Sendmail denies relaying from
outside as default, but fewer daemons running, the better.
To disable sendmail from starting in RH52, just type "setup", enter
"ntsysv" and just disable sendmail.
The hard way would be to enter /etc/rc.d/rc3.d, and just removing
S80sendmail. It's just a softlink to /etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail so don't
be worry. (rc3.d defines the scripts which should be started, when the
linuxbox enters multiuser state. "man init" for more info.)
You should also do this to the /etc/rc.d/rc0.d/K30sendmail and
./rc6.d/K30sendmail, which contains the daemon kill scripts for
shutdown (0) and and reboot (6).
