I have just upgraded from Red Hat 5.2 to version 6.0 (intel). I am
having a few problems. One of them is that I can no longer print to my
printer. When I try to do so, I get the following error message:
[cribari@edgeworth texfiles]$ lpr test.ps
lpr: connect: Connection refused
jobs queued, but cannot start daemon.
[cribari@edgeworth texfiles]$
Any hints/suggestions/tips? Thanks. FC.
PS: Since my connection to usenet news groups is rather unstable,
replies by e-mail (in addition to posting) are especially appreciated.

That's only partially true; it exercises CPU, RAM, HD, ... . Since
my initial reply I've found the following in SuSE's Linux 6.1 manual:
A very popular test for hardware and software is to compile the
kernel with make -j. You will need quite a lot of RAM (more
than 100MB). This launches a compiler for each source file.
I don't think there is anything like AMI-DIAGNOSTICS for Linux, and
that is a DOS program. If the hardware works under DOS it should
work under any OS. That being said: there is no validation suite for
DOS/Win, Linux, ... .

Do you have 'st' (SCSI Tape) support either compiled-in or as a
loadable module. Check it with 'lsmod'.
Also, you can use 'script' to capture output to a file then edit and
post it. Include 'dmesg', 'lsmod', exact error message give, ... .

There is an option in Netconf that allows users to modify a network
connection. Not sure what flavor your using though so this may or may
not help.

Hello,
I've managed yesterday to install the sound driver in linux (kernel
2.0.29, distribution SuSe 4.4.1). I can play and record audio files now,
but when I try to play audio CDs using workman I am unsuccessful. No
sound at all, even though if I use the jack from the CD-ROM I can hear
the music. I can play audio CDs through the soundcard in Windows though.
If I boot first Windows95 and then Linux (using loadlin), I have no
problem, I can hear the music through the soundcard, but not when I boot
directly Linux.
Has anybody encountered this before? Does anyone have any ideas to help
me? If you respond to my message, please CC my e-mail address too.
Thank you very much.

Why Red Hat? How does their commercial success make them the "Linux Community"?
I would think that the *only* one who could accept their offer (on behalf of
the "Linux Community" would be Linus Torvalds (the *owner* of Linux). There
certainly is no other person with that sort of authority to speak for Linux.
However, the Mindcraft study involved more than the Linux kernel; it involved
tools from the Free Software Foundation, Apache.org, Sendmail.org, Red Hat,
and a wide variety of sources. For the "Linux Community" to accept Mindcraft's
offer, *all* of these parties have to accept the offer.
Think of it this way: If someone wished to benchmark a Windows NT box running IBM's
WebSphere web server, serving pages backed by MicroFocus/Merant's NetExpress
COBOL compiler and Sun's Java classes, would Microsoft be the *only* party
to approve the test? No, the would not.
Microsoft/Mindcraft get off easy here, because they don't have to retract the
study (leaving potentially damaging results published to undiscerning customers).
They don't have to retract the results because they don't have to retest, and they
don't have to retest because there is no *single* interested party that officially
objects to the results published from the first test. They know that Red Hat cannot
speak for the "Linux Community" (because the "Linux Community" doesn't exist as an
owner and interested party to their test), and they know that they would have to get
agreement from *all* of the interested parties in order to make a retest worthwhile.
They win, without doing anything but publishing misleading results to a skewed test.

ANyone know of a good e-mail program for RH6.0.
Must support multiple POP accounts and heirachical folders in text message

Trying to get the same functionality as Outlook Express 5.0, but under
linux and avoiding MS.
Netscape only allows one POP account (at 4.51).

Since this was crossposted to a Linux group, I'll give you the
Linux answer: No. Traditional Un*x groups do not allow nesting. Some
directory services have ways around this, such as netgroups under NIS
and NIS+. Other Unices have something called Access Control Lists
(ACLs), which can allow similar things. But standard Un*x groups do not
allow the arrangement you describe.

You are all forgetting that *most* linux installations are exclusive
(i.e. there is only one OS, Linux). The DOS MBR is seriously deficient.
It can not cope with large disks.
So, the bottom line, to use loadlin, you need dos. Why have a broken dos
when you do not need it.
For me to use LoadLin I would have to shuffle all my partitions so that
I can get one on the first bootable hard disk which is dos only. I would
have to find a way of moving the kernel from ext2fs to FAT, (i.e. FAT
support), and my ex-linux box will become a dual boot system.
Frankly, educated use of lilo provides for many more alternatives than
loadlin. Also, on principal, I want to keep my Linux box "pure", and use
my MS Win98 box for the things it is good for.
I do have the luxury of two PC's.
For people who dual (or more) boot, it is *perhaps* more useful to use
loadlin (I did for a while). Still, most people will not need Loadlin
because they have no DOS.

"Nothing depends on them any more" isn't good enough; the sysadmin or
users might have installed their own programs which depend on them,
e.g. in /usr/local or their home directories, and this won't be
recorded in package dependencies anywhere, so dselect (or whatever
other package manager) couldn't know about it.

Yep, I burn CD's of mp3's at home, and drag them into work to listen to.
Beats carrying around a stack of CDs and changing them every 45 minutes
or so. :) The 501M CD mounted at work right now is just a bit over 7
hours worth of music.

Well, my application is for home use, so a hard drive won't hurt
reliability too much. It's a much better environment than the jostling
and temperature extremes of a car. :)
Embedded controllers have a lot of advantages, like more sane power
requirements and a much smaller footprint. A good chunk of motherboard
real estate is spent on the ISA and PCI slots, which are really not
needed for this application, and it's easy to find boards with sound and
even ethernet and LCD driver already there.
But finding a vendor is a lot harder.

i fixed this yesterday,
i really had 1.0.1 installed, but there are 2 additional files of the wrong
version.
i think i made a mistake during installing a recommended update from redhat,
just forgot to uninstall/kill the wrong version, so 2 files were still
alive.
killed them manually, all works fine now.

Subject: Problem after upgrading kernel
Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 08:45:04 +0200
Hi!
I finally managed to upgrade my kernel from kernel 2.0.3? to 2.2.9. However
I get some error messages when I boot and shutdown saying something like
this: "modprobe couldn't find module net-pf-4" and "modprobe couldn't find
module net-pf-5". I can use my net card so I don't understand what linux is
complaining about...?
Thanks in advance.

5c. Better if you have the groups switch platforms too. Make the UNIX's work
on NT and The NT's work on UNIX.
