Quoting ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/README.mirror-policy (dated May 31st 1999):
:- SuSE Linux (YaST in particular) may not be reproduced on CDs
: or other media FOR PROFIT. Reproduction for personal
: or educational use is explicitly allowed.
So either Linux Central and Linux Mall are not making profits on their SuSE
CDs, or they've made arrangements with SuSE, or they're violating licenses.
In any case, this means YaST is not free software.
>They started with Slackware's install program and made YAST out of it, so

While Slackware's install program presumably is free software (I haven't
checked its licensing terms), this isn't a straightforward implication. Some
free software licenses prevent derived proprietary works (e.g. GPL and LGPL;
and to some degree MPL), others don't (public domain, BSD or MIT style
licenses).

Disregarding the difference in what you can install (which varies greatly
between distributions), there are differences in the installed system.
Differences in upgradability, level of integration (e.g. if you install an
additional package, does your distribution update your window manager's
menus? if you install a viewer package, does your distribution update your
mailcap? if you try to remove a library that an application uses, what
happens).

Standardisation is important, but quality is more important. Linux
distributions to some degree appeal to different markets, but there is
significant overlap. In that overlap area, healthy free software market
competition is encouraging improvements.

There's a way to run something periodically, and still use your shell
for all kind of stuff.
I had it put in:

You need to use the -p and -P options (or -w/-W -h/-H options) in patchlevel
1.17 to specify both the input and output sizes separately. You probably
still want to output on 8.5 x 11, even though input in 11 x 8.5.

Subject: Linux + BeOS + Windows
Date: Fri, 4 Jun 1999 13:43:26 +0400
Is it possible to have all three on the same box?
I currently have a dual-boot system with Windows and Linux residing on
separate hard-drives.
Here's my present lilo.conf
boot = /dev/hda
timeout = 50
prompt
default = dos
vga = normal
read-only
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.0.36-0.7
label = old
root = /dev/hdc6
image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.6-new
label = linux
root = /dev/hdc6
other = /dev/hda1
label = dos
table=/dev/hda
I want to add a BeOS dedicated partition to the HDD where Windows
currently is. I guess I will have to make it with Partition Magic (BTW,
what file system shall I apply?).
What then? Run the setup program from the BeOS CD? Or tweak my lilo.conf
to include something like:
other = /dev/hda2
label = beos
table=/dev/hda2
Thanks for your hints.

Oh it was a good one, been around for years. Apperantly the combo box
and recordset indicie would get out of sync if a record was deleted
and another was edited. The edits would overwrite the wrong record. At
first MS said it was only in Access 97, they admitted it was in older
versions on Access and then finally that the problem was in the Jet
engine itself but never fear for your data integrety because MS's
response was:
"It really would be something that would be more typical of a power
user," said John Duncan, an Office product manager.
I guess that makes MS non-professional in your books too.

I already have a grep, thank you.
Although many people seem to want to ignore it, the success of Linux is
grounded in its nature as free software
(http://www.fsf.org/philosophy/philosophy.html ,
http://www.debian.org/intro/free). It is my strong believe that the
continued success of Linux (if you will, the GNU/Linux/BSD/X operating
environment) depends on embracing, rather than ignoring its free software
nature. I am acting on that belief by contributing to the development of a
Linux distribution that is dedicated (http://www.debian.org/social_contract)
to free software.
>From this belief, I have a healthy disrepect for attempts to take
away freedom in the core parts of the operating environment, such as
libraries and package management/configuration tools.

Under LINUX works also "*/1 * * * * /usr/local/bin/netmrtg".
It means every minute.

Using the sync option (see mount(8)) may reduce the risk of data corruption
due to power failures.
Another option would be to use an uninteruptable power suply for the system.

At the moment, there is no journaled filesystem for Linux. SGI has announced
it will release the code for XFS under an Open Source license (see
http://www.linuxworld.com/linuxworld/lw-1999-05/lw-05-sgi.html), and the
kernel developers are planning an "ext3" filesystem which may have
journalling capabilities.

Why do you want to edit ? (I suppose to change something...)
I'm not an expert on this field, but as far as I know, the
files in /proc are existing in _memory only_ so they are
virtual files ! (therefore you can't edit them...)
You should go to other directory to change something...

Note that only some versions of cron support the */<period> notation. The
message was posted to several comp.os.linux.* groups, so I assume that's
the flavor of cron he's using; I don't know offhand if it does, but even if
it does, this warning is helpful for those reading in comp.unix.*.
