ANNOUNCE: 4th June 1999

           JASSPA distribution of MicroEmacs '99
                     New Beta available

     * Improved font support. UNIX and MS-Window platforms
provide improved font support. Decoupling of the Font
box characters enables ANSI and OEM fonts to be
supported on windows, within the UNIX domain more
fixed fonts may be selected even if they do not
       support box drawing characters.

     * Multi-language support. Improved support of foreign
languages through better support of the ISO-Latin
character set. All dictionaries are defined in terms
of ISO-Latin character sets. Macros provide
conversion of MS-DOS OEM <=> ISO-Latin. Added support
for French, German, Portuguese and Spanish.

     * Much improved user-setup dialog with configuration
       options for most used features.

     * Extended undo, with undo past last save and redo
       capability.

     * Ipipe shell windows stabilized and made more robust.

     * The Microsoft Windows environments support an
       interactive shell window using Cygwin.

     * Introduction of 'local variables' and 'macro specific
variables' into the macro language. Improves
readability of the macro language and tightens the
       scope of variables.

     * Reorganization of the color schemes in an attempt to
unify the color scheme definitions. Creation of a
       color scheme editor

     * Support for Client/Server interface to allow external
programs to communication to MicroEmacs, also allows
re-use of the same editor with the '-o' command line
       option.

     * Minor bug fixes in all areas, Win32s support for
Microsoft Win3.x environments. Additional support for
more file types and extended documentation.

This vmware is really brilliant. If you want to
simulate several machines to run, network inside
one standalone computer, this is your answer.
I'ts quite good to prototype a physical network with
vmware before implementing the real stuff.
I would highly recommend it to people who
doesn't have a network and relying only on a single
machine but would like to learn the
essentials about networking.
I have tried Samba and it works fine. Now I'm in
the process of getting the IP Masquerading in action
so I can't tell you much until success is achieved.

Subject: insmod problems

    I'm installing a 3Com 3c509b driver on my Red Hat 5.1(kernel version
2.0.34-0.6) machine. The module is sitting in the
/lib/modules/2.0.34-0.6/net/ directory, but when I try to install it I
get the message "a module named 3c509 already exists."
I tried using rmmod to uninstall the mod and then tried insmod again,
but got the same message.
Also, in a directory called /lib/modules/prefered/net/ there also
exists a bunch of modules, the 3c509.o module included. I don't know if
it's affecting(either positvely or negatively anything.
   Any ideas?
   Thanks.
   Mike.

scrolling the mouse is interpreted as Z axis, but clicking the wheel is
indeed button 3. you can also remap up/down scrolling on the wheel to
button 4/5, or use the imwheel pacakge.

from what I gather from the man page, you are changing the root directory
BEFORE you execute the command. So wouldn't that make /bin/bash the wrong
path? your new root is /system2 instead of / so unless you put bash in
/system2/bash and execute that istead of /bin/bash it won't execute.

I'm just guessing, but you may want to look this over. Seems logical to me.

This is what I do and it works every time:

make config
make dep
make clean
make zImage
make modules
make modules_install
Copy zImage to / (my boot directory)
edit /etc/lilo.conf to add new kernel name, (if different from old one)
run lilo
reboot
have fun...

I've never seen the 'make install' used in the kernel build. Though I'm not
saying you can't do that. I also notice when you used 'make' you didn't
tell it WHAT to make. Though I'm no expert there either.

Hi,
after you "cleaned" the Bootblock with fdisk /MBR:

Have you done the "sys C:" command ???
If not: do it, (normally then you can boot your Win$ again)
If this is ok, do a "lilo" again.
Then everything should work fine.

absolutely. actually, as it turns out, while all Free Software
(http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html) is Open Source
(www.opensource.org), not all Open Source software is Free Software.
consider the APSL (http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/apsl.html) for which
apple was granted permission to use the Open Source trademark, but
which isn't a Free Software license.

therefore, we say Free or Free Software when we mean Free Software,
and we say Open Source when we mean falls under the Open Source
guidelines and/or is allowed to use the Open Source trademark.

compile with -w to get rid of the 'warnings'. Some to the 'errors' may disappear

You haven't given enough information. Do you us a VPN? or do you
have a regular IP and gateway with DNS and all that jazz. If the later
then take the info from NT and plug into relatize locations in Linux,
depending on distro can be different. If you have VPN, what kind?

I installed my ATI rage II+ on RH5.2 without many problems. I however had to
choose a pretty low refresh rate and not go over 800*600 res.

According to xf86config it is never a good idea to run autoprobe with this
card. I had to take pot luck with my rate settings until i found one that
worked.

Lucky for me my first guess was correct, namely the lowest refresh on the list!

Try running the upgrade procedure from the install CD. It is the

It's not a problem it's a feature. Free memory is not doing anything
useful so the kernel grabs it for disk cache to improve disk read/write
performance.

The kernel also swaps pages that haven't been referenced for a while to
disk to free more memory for running processes and disk cache.

I bought my RH 6.0 from www.cheapbytes.com for 1.99 + 5.00 shipping. I bet
that is cheaper than SuSE.

Boot from the RH6.0 cdrom and start the install. Choose install and run
fdisk. fdisk will remove it.

I use a file manager, which is fast, clean,
small, scalable, flexible, stable, widely
supported, and also has an extensive help system.
I only recommend it for experienced users, though.
Look on a GNU-mirror for fileutils-x.xx.tar.gz

MIT cookies have nothing to do with the graphic card. Try adding "xhost +"
as the first line in your .xinitrc

Try "linuxconf".

If the subprogram goes into an infinite loop (locks up), who's going to
notice? You'd would need a pre-emptive multitasking system where the main
program can 'monitor' the subprograms behaviour. If the subprogram 'times
out', the main program could then kill on the task.

This problem is caused by not having the correct server installed.
Find out which one goes with your card and install it in the bin
directory referenced below. I had a similar problem by skimping on
the number of servers that I unpacked. Better yet, unpack them all
and let Xconfigurator pick. Then delete the ones that are not linked.
