Visit http://www.redhat.com/mirrors.html and pick a ftp site that is
near you. You'll need about 600meg or so of disk space to download to.
If you are going to install from hard disk, this should be a partition
that Linux can deal with (eg. FAT16) and one that won't be clobbered
during the install. Given the size, you probably don't want to download
it via a modem connection. It should also be possible to burn a CD-ROM.

The 'exec' command in most shells (sh, bash, csh, etc.) *replaces* the
shell program with the new program in the same process. The shell is at
that point gone. When the program exits, the process terminates (you
are logged out). This is *normal*, expected behavior, but not what you
want. You don't need to do this. Just type:
/path/to/file
at the shell prompt.
This forks a new process (a child of the current shell) and loads the
specified program file into it and starts it up. The shell process
then waits for the child process to go away (it uses some flavor of
'wait()' system call). When the child process (your program) exits, the
shell resumes control -- it prints a new shell prompt and accepts a new
command or program to run.

Right. /bin/sh behaves the same (modulo your various ~/.login, ~/.profile,
~/.cshrc, ~/.bashrc, etc. files) no matter who you are.

It is not a C problem, but a shell usage issue. 'man bash', 'man csh',
etc. would give you the answers you seek -- from 'man bash':
exec [[-] command [arguments]]
If command is specified, it replaces the shell. No
new process is created. The arguments become the
arguments to command. If the first argument is -,
the shell places a dash in the zeroth arg passed to
command. This is what login does. If the file
cannot be executed for some reason, a non-interac-
tive shell exits, unless the shell variable
no_exit_on_failed_exec exists, in which case it
returns failure. An interactive shell returns
failure if the file cannot be executed. If command
is not specified, any redirections take effect in
the current shell, and the return status is 0.
Other shells (csh, tcsh, ksh, etc.) behave much the same.

One of the sites is
www.worldonline.be
if I do a nslookup its IP is 212.233.1.66
But when I try a a reverse lookup the hostname from the IP it isn't found.
Conclusion their DNS server isn't configured the right way.
Also 212.233.1.66 seems also to be a name server to.
Another site is
www.ifcn.nl its IP is 195.86.34.10
195.86.34.10 corresponds with ns.1-4-all.nl
So this is also a name server
So I'm beginning to suspect a misconfiguration of dns servers.
At least the DNS server of worldonline.be isn't correctly configured.
No referse lookups
But it should be strange if this is the cause.

I haven't used the Caldera distribution (Caldera OpenLinux) but I hear their
new version is the easiest to install so far. Asking such open ended questions
about a particular distribution like this is discouraged though, due to the
likelihood of it causing a flamewar (mostly by Emacs fans who now advocate
tough gun control laws after the VI'ers won the paintball). At least
<F5><F5><F5><F5><F5><F5>
Of GNU/Linux in general, I personally like it for various reasons, you might
for others. I note that Caldera installs KDE by default, so you will have an
easy environment to start with. It also comes with some proprietary software
(Star Office for example) which you may or may not care about.
Stability with the Linux kernel is good, downtime on my system is caused by
power cuts (and hardware related problems). The GNU software is of very high
quality.
Be sure to look for your hardware in the Hardware-HOWTO (metalab.unc.edu/LDP),
although this documentation is out of date it is a good start. Also xfree86.org
to check your video card, although Caldera's distribution may also come with a
proprietary X server which may support more cards.
GNU/Linux excels at network related tasks. The box I use is a mail(smtp,pop3),
DNS, and firewall server for my home LAN, and has at times performed duties as
a web, database, ftp and irc server.
I have a brother that also uses GNU/Linux, although purely as a desktop system.
Of a completely unrelated note, it is interesting that a computer he won
(supposedly worth NZ$10,000 in November) - an AMD K6-300, 32MB ram, some ATI
video card (soldered into the motherboard, ugh) appears slower than my Pentium
75 with the same amount of RAM and a 1MB S3 868 video card bought for NZ$3000
in January 1995 (which actually runs Enlightenment and GNOME at a fair speed.
Not that I use any X apps, but still. The people that say E is a memory hog are
confused, it uses around the same as Window Maker with a fairly modest theme).
Both in Windows 98 and GNU/Linux. On the other hand, with the 2.2 Linux kernel
it was considerably faster than now (it's using the Debian 2.0 release, which
has several show stopping issues with the 2.2 kernel so is using 2.0.36
currently).
As you appear to be quite interested in computers Patrick, you will learn a lot
from using GNU/Linux. I know that in the one and a half years I've been using
it I have learnt a lot. Now I just need to get a bigger hard drive so I can try
out FreeBSD :)

I believe this is in a TEXTAREA. Encountered this problem on another
site that required some data be entered in a TEXTAREA. I have xcpustate

windows 98 reports that it can not copy "translation table". Can Red hat be

a system where the cdrom is not visible in dos as there is no cdrom attached to
the laptop. Only direct cable connection to a larger pc with a cd rom drive.

I've got the same problem with CD-R's written
under Win95. If you look at /var/log/messages
you'll see some errors like this:
kernel: isofs_read_level3_size: More than 100 file
sections ?!?, aborting...
I got around this by patching fs/isofs/inode.c,
just above this error message, and another similar
one, to use 10000 retries insted of 100. It looks
like some CD-R's will get written with many
fragments.
Can anyone confirm this is the fix?

i like install via ftp. if you have a network connexion to a larger
pc with cdrom drive, linux and an ftp server you are all set. ftp
install has worked many times for me.

from Linux-Now. They are even cheaper than Cheapbytes and Linux Mall.

perhaps. many are simply controllerless (the AT command parsing being
performed in host software - not a bad idea if only specs for the
interface were released).
whatever you call it, pci modems do not work in linux.
i'd like to be wrong on this one. please name a pci modem that *does
work* in linux. no rumors, just something working.
