It is probably your modem, which is likely to be controllerless... please

I had a quick thought on this problem of yours. Have you tried dialing in
with minicom and see what might be happening, might just see where it is
hanging up on you.

Good luck,

Does anyone have this video card working under Linux?
I have Redhat 6.0 and Caldera 2.2 both recognized the
card as unknown S3 chipset, but does not recognize the
8MB memory on the card (this is an AGP card set up on a
SOYO 5EM+ socket 7 motherboard - not integrated) so
I am getting a 320x204 resolution - KDE looks beautiful even
on that though!

The price looked tempting ($50) and the RH hardware list showed
support for Terminator 64 3D, that's what tempted me to buy this
one.. Hope it will work..

If someone actually got it working, could you please send me your
XF86Config - yes.. I won't use it directly but that would be a good
starting point, I guess. My monitor is a 17inch HP M70 monitor that
came with my Pavilion (I scrapped the pavilion - built a good one
myselves now)

And my $0.02 - don't buy the so called 'home machines' from any
big brand names - HP, Compaq etc..they suck! Haven't heard anything
bad about Dell though..

Thanks for your help

i need to be able to view microsoft powerpoint files (.ppt)
is there a software package for viewing (and maybe creating) these files
?

i am also looking for a package to allow me to draw block diagrams/
dataflow diagrams
is there something like that for linux ?

i have heard that there is a package for viewing word documents (.doc)
for linux
what is it called ?

i have looked thru the contrib directories on the linux sites,
and some of the names of the packages are pretty cryptic (with no
descriptions)
the only way i know of to find out what a rpm file is is to download it
and do a query on it
is there a better way ?

thanks for any help,

What window manager are you using? If you're using KDE (the default on
SuSE, Caldera, Mandrake) just drag and drop. A popup menu will appear
where you dropped giving you the options 'copy', 'move' and 'link'. Choose
link.

The shell command equivalent is 'ln' (link). Look at the man page with
'man ln'.

I'm in agreement here. I had to make that decision for myself a while ago. Using
the asterisk for cross products makes equations appear more 'natural'. Also, you
probably want to be able to pre and post-multiply vectors by scalars, for which you
will probably want to use an asterisk. Rather than redefining another operator for
the dot product, I just use a friend function (c = Dot(a,b)) since you can only take
the dot product of 2 vectors at a time anyway.

I have RH5.2 and things don't seem to be configured
quite right with regard to fonts. Netscape spews...

Warning: Cannot convert string %s to type FontStruct

...for each of...

"-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*"
"-*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-*-100-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*"
"-*-helvetica-bold-r-*-*-*-100-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*"
"-*-helvetica-medium-o-*-*-*-100-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*"
"-adobe-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*"

...and the display is fair to bad. The increase/decrease
font size options on the view menu are greyed out.

Gimp also cannot finding some fonts listed in the selection
dialog. Most of the logo generating scripts die because the
default font for that script cannot be found.

Any pointers, general or specific, would be appreciated.

too old. The kernel does have elf support. I can't even get the player

That depends on what you mean.

It's in Oracle's interest to get developers to look at Oracle8i for
Linux. It's not hard to get a legitimate copy that's free for
development and testing. (I've got a CD jewel box of Oracle8i for
Linux on my desk right here -- as soon as I can put a quarter-gig of
RAM in a server, I'll start testing it.)

However, if you want to deploy an Oracle database server to run, say,
a site like Amazon.com, you can bet you'll pay for it.

1) the classic C operators come with baggage of user expectation.
e.g., making * do subtraction and / be concatenation might be
confusing. having @ do anything wouldn't be as surprising.

2) C++ has the old C operator precedence table. if you wish to define
a new product, it ought to act like a product and take precedence
   over addition.

3) how do you add a new operation to the existing natural types such
   as int? [1]

[1] yes, you could make a new class containing only an int and
overload say '+' for that new class. then by casting you could
invoke the new operation. imho this seems to be a perversion.
neither would it add any operation to int.

We want to say thank you to James Clark <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, the original

Please note that currently only bugs will be fixed; enhancing the

As a first step, we have created a CVS repository which can be
accessed anonymously:

  export CVSROOT=:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/cvs

Alternatively, you can download a daily snapshot resp. a diff file to

seems you were forced by someone to use linux.. sorry for you!

you are trying to work with an operating system that is still under
active development and is being made more and more 'easier for the
dummies' day by day. Well, if editing 4 lines into a resolv.conf file
sticks in someone's craw (what'ver that means) I think he should
stick with windows for a little longer and don't worry about the
rest of the world whose craw's are being sticked in.. :-)

remember editing autoexec.bat and config.sys with all those goofy
8 letter sys and com and exe file names and even goofier arguments
that does not follow any standard pattern..

Well, at least in Linux if you do edit these little text files
here and there, things work!!!

Clearly, there are some cases of overloading that a majority of C++
programmers will find objectionable.

But what meaning would you expect of % between two vectors? I don't
see any possible confusion.

Unfortunately, @ isn't in the basic translation time character set of C++. I
recall, perhaps wrongly, that Objective C uses this character to introduce
conforming extensions.

Are you saying that % doesn't? It has the same precedence and associativity as
the binary * and / .

You can't. Only class types can have overloads.

In C++, you don't have any choice. If you want to overload, you need a class
type. You might use a typedef name instead of int; then a subsequent decision
to change the typedef name to a class type should be relatively painless.

In other words, create a file called resolv.conf, if it's not there
already, in /etc.

The contents would be something similar to

domain myisp.domain.name
search myisp.domain.name
nameserver 111.222.333.444
nameserver 555.666.777.888

etc.. at least one entry for 'nameserver'.
Replace the above dummy domain name and nameserver
IP addresses with yours.
You can get this info from your ISP's website.. or call the darned
1-800 number or local support number that their invoice shows :-)

Have fun and never give up!

Subject: POP3 and SMTP for Sendmail/Linux
Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 15:31:45 GMT

I recently configured a zone on my box for the purpose of testing email.
I setup sendmail and the DNS correctly(I think) and can send and receive
mail locally. Whenever I go off site (for example: checking mail with
yahoo) I cannot POP the mail for some reason. I haven't been able to test
sending from offsite but believe that both POP and SMTP are caused by the
same problem. Can anyone offer some advice?
