No, the benchmark is between NT, and linux+samba
If you ran it on solaris, you will then have a better idea of how much of it
is linux's fault, and how much is samba's.

Yes, because they couldn't be sure that DR-DOS would support Windows. And I

I've a paraller port Iomega zip.
It works good with Linux Red Hat 6.0, I've just to do modprobe ppa and
then to mount the zip disk.
I also have an AVA1505 used to drive my Scanner (Agfa 1236s). It also
work fine after 2 days of hard work.
The problem is that when I exec modprobe ppa the scanner don't work!
When I exec rmmod ppa the scanner works fine.
Why happens these? Is possible to make work both scanner and Zip?
Thanks a lot & Best Regards

Whenever I log out using the Gnome panel, the panel dies, but the X

basically launch X as follows:

Then I run .xinitrc, which contains

X starts, along with the panel and gmc, and I show the following
processes running:

I get the following in .X.err:

Anyone know what's going on here? I'm running Gnome core 1.0.5-1 and
wmaker 0.51.1-9 on SuSE 6.1.

Gordo,
The resolv.conf file is used as a source for ip resolution on the
system. For personal workstations connecting to the internet and not
using DHCP, the file is where the nameserver IP address(es) is entered.
You can also specify ip-to-name addresses for systems within your
domain, and a default search address for host-name lookups. Like I said,
if you are just setting up a web server on your personal machine and
don't need name resolution across a network (e.g. you aren't running a
DNS and don't need name resolution to other machines *on* your LAN, then
the resolv.conf will only have the IP address of your service provider's
name server. See the MAN page for a better understanding of the other
options for resolv.conf.
Good Luck
Jim

Fortunately, Linux doesn't have to win. Or, to put it another way, it will
win anyhow.
Wny? Because "Linux Inc" can not go bancrupt. If people stops buying Linux,
something that just won't happen in the near future unless something truly
better comes along (reader's exercise: Do you think that "better" product
will come out of Redmond, WA? Please, if you answer on this one, consider
follow-up to comp.os.linux.advocacy...).
Linus Torvals will still be able to continue to work on the
kernel. What's more, All of for example RedHat's work is GPL'ed, so that if
RedHat goes bankrupt, the tools/technology is still out there and available
to whoever wants to build on it.
My point: The Linux community has all the time in the world. We don't have to
defeat Windows today or tomorrow.
Food for thought: Which OS do *you* think is most likely to still be
vital and living in 10-20 years, NT or Linux? (answer on this one might also
suit on c.o.l.a)

You'll have to create those devices sooner or later. If you
get the ftape package from the maintainer, you can use a
script provided inside to create the devices. If you're
comfortable using mknod, then here are the devices as
defined on my box:
snopc5:~/tools/exe> ls -l /dev/*ft0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root disk 27, 12 Dec 7 1995 /dev/nqft0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root disk 27, 4 Jul 17 1994 /dev/nrft0

crw-rw-rw- 1 root disk 27, 24 Dec 7 1995 /dev/zqft0
I made them rw by everyone so that I could do backups from my
personal account, by they are usually created with 660 permissions.
Your best bet to debug your problem is to visit the home of the
ftape web pages. They are at http://www.math1.rwth-aachen.de/~heine/ftape/
(although the server isn't responding at present).

why does it not print !!??

As modules? I'd at least compile the two last ones of these into the kernel.
Or, how else do you think your Linux kernel is going to know how to access

Check out the Dial-on-Demand mini-howto
(/usr/doc/faq/howto/mini/Dial-On-Demand.gz,
or at the Linux Documentation Project
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/unmaintained/mini/).
Enable the /sbin/request-route script according to the instructions
in the howto, and you'll be demand-dialing

First run "make config" in /usr/src/linux,
see the README in the same directory -job

Sound about right, but I've heard a rumor of a company that used that
technology to completely mirror their data center at different locations.
If one went down, the other responed, seamlessly.

Actually, eight machines. But MS has expanded that to nearly 100 in a
cluster of clusters http://www.microsoft.com/technet/cdonline/serverop.htm
it runs www.microsoft.com.

Encrypt it. There are encrypting filesystems out there, I believe. If the
admin doesn't have your password, and your password is a good enough one,
the admin won't be able to do anything useful with your file.

At a guess, it's because as a normal user, SVGAlib doesn't have
appropriate rights to the console screen.

Go with Postgresql over either. It is free and Opensource. Meaning
it will always be free. It is free for development, and free for
commercial deployment.
