Did you set your linux link to point to linux-2.2.14? I find it interesting that
your make is trying to make all of your targets in the linux-2.0.35 directory
indicating that you have something pointing to 2.0.35 instead of pointing to
2.2.14. Do you have your 2.2.14 source under linux-2.2.14, and you have reset
your linux link to 2.2.14 by doing 'ln -s linux-2.2.14 linux'? Perhaps you
should fix your link, then run make mrproper to get your links pointing
appropriately.

I just used fips to create an extra partition to install RH 6.1. I boot
from the floppy (could not boot from cdrom) and everything seems to be ok,
the first screen comes up says to hit enter for install ...... but then I
get a white screen with vertical black stripes which then goes totally white
and hangs. WHats going on?? Thanks

I don't know how to make the entry in text, but if you were to use the
printtool from Redhat and check in the filter selections for your
printer, you might see that the fix stair step option is not checked (in
other words, the filter is only sending Linefeeds, but no Carriage
Returns. Therefore your text is off the page after the first line of
text, and all you get is a blank page). Check the fix stair step option
and print a test ASCII page. You should now see your output.

How did you do the installation? Boot off the CDROM? Graphical
or text based installation? On my end Storm linux would bomb anywhere
between 25% to 75% percent. What I ended up doing was disabling APM and
booting off the CDROM and choosing the graphical installation, this
worked.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Edward A. Falk)
Date: 26 Feb 2000 05:48:52 GMT

Hi all; just upgraded to RH 6.0 and I've noticed a couple of
problems related to audio. The strangest is the fact that I
can now only run tplay() as root. If I try to run it as myself,
it dies with

        tplay: Error: Cannot create thread

Other audio applications that don't use threads can play back
fine.

For those who care, here is the relavent part of the trace
output:

    pipe([5, 6]) = 0
    clone()                                 = 2912
    write(6, "\267\200\3@\5\0\0\0\350,\1@x<\1@"..., 148) = 148
    SYS_175(0x2, 0, 0xbffff944, 0x8, 0x2) = 0
    write(6, " ?\2@\0\0\0\0\350\371\377\277\314"..., 148) = 148
    SYS_175(0x2, 0, 0xbffff8b0, 0x8, 0x2) = 0
    SYS_179(0xbffff8b0, 0x8, 0, 0xbffff8b0, 0xbffff8b0 <unfinished ...>
    --- (null) (Real-time signal 0) ---
    <... SYS_179 resumed> ) = -1 EINTR (Interrupted system call)
    sigreturn()                             = ? (mask now [])
    write(2, "tplay: Error: Cannot create thread\n"..., 35) = 35

Does this make any sense to anybody? Once again, tplay works just
fine if I run it as root.

Subject: emacs cursor color problem xfree86, nvidia tnt
Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 06:12:10 GMT

When I run emacs, the cursor is not visible. The text at the cursor
location is colored, but the rectangular colored block doesn't appear.
When the cursor is at an area with no text, it is invisible making it
difficult to work with. The strange thing is that if I run the same
copy or emacs as the same user and set the DISPLAY to another computer,
the cursor is visible and everything works fine. So, I think the
problem has something to do with my Xserver. I'm running XF86 under
redhat 6.0 with an nvidia tnt card.

The other strange thing is that I can get the cursor to reappear in a
certain region of emacs if I select that region and change the face
color or background color to any other color. (And it doesn't matter
which color I start emacs with using -bg or -fg....the cursor only
appears if i change the color once I'm running).

Also, I've taken a working version of emacs on another computer with
another user and set the DISPLAY to my computer and the same problem
still happens.

That's why I think the problem must have something to do with my X
server. I don't think it's a color depth problem since any color can be
coaxed into working if I change the foreground/background color once
emacs is running. Still, I tried changing my /etc/X11/XF86Config to use
32-bit color, then 16-bit color, but it made no difference.

Does anyone know what's wrong of how to fix this?

Thanks a lot,
-Tom

It is a bug in the server (or more precisely, in the way emacs uses
the server) and only effects certain fonts (one being the one I prefer
to use.) My work around was to change the cursor to a bar, and I have
since come to prefer the bar to the box cursor. Try adding the
following to your .emacs (or choose another font :-)

;;;
;; Change box cursor to bar
;;
(setq initial-frame-alist
      (cons '(cursor-type . bar)
            (cons '(cursor-color . "red")
                  (copy-alist initial-frame-alist))))
(setq default-frame-alist
      (cons '(cursor-type . bar)
            (cons '(cursor-color . "red")
                  (copy-alist default-frame-alist))))

This is an old, old bug that's been fixed for many months. I think any
XFree86 SVGA server better than 3.3.3 or so will not exhibit this
anymore.

The latest official version of XFree86 is 3.3.6, IIRC. I suggest
upgrading your system...

Subject: Setting up nn-6.5.x under Red Hat Linux (terminal problems)
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (william henry hsu)
Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 07:21:40 GMT

Last July, I installed an encap binary of nn-6.5.1 on my Linux (Red
Hat 6.0) systems, and it was able to connect to the local news servers (at
UIUC and at KSU) with no trouble. It generated some display problems,
however. Specifically, it wrapped text in an irregular way (apparently,
without putting hard linefeeds). My TERM environment variable is "vt100", and
nn reported the columns as 80 and the charset as "US-ascii", but both messages
and titles were unreadable.

I circumvented this problem at the time by getting the nn-6.5.4
sources and compiling them from scratch using the "s-linux.h" include, but
recently, this problem has recurred in my installation. Several packages in
/usr/share have been removed, most notably Emacs, but I'm not sure whether
(or why) this would affect nn.

Has anyone installed nn under Linux before, and if so, did you have to
change any of the settings in its lib/nn/conf or any other config file? I'd
also like to learn how to permanently fix the sources (or get a newer source
or Red Hat binary package if they now exist).

Thanks,
Bill

I am using the SVGA server for my TNT card. It

Hi,
I am having a problem with my Red Hat 5.2 installation.
I am running the Linux box as a gateway/firewall for the rest of my home
network via a cable modem connection with @home. I run dhcpcd with ipfwadm
firewalling.
My problem is this: when it comes time for dhcpcd to renew the lease,
it crashes. Restarting dhcpcd does not work, but a reboot of the machine
does.
/var/log/messages is full of messages saying: "dhcpcd[312] RENEWING:
operation not permitted"
                                            followed by lots of:
"dhcpcd[312] REBINDING: operation not permitted"

dhcpcd then crashes, and can not be restarted.

I have searched Deja News, and have found a few messages describing this
problem, but no solutions.
Does anyone know why dhcpcd is crashing on me, and how to fix it?

    Thanks
