In fact, they show the opposite.

It's better to put the directory in the tarfile and let it include
its contents. That way when you unpack it it will create a directory with
the same name instead of dumping a lot of files out where you're sitting.
cd ..
tar cvf dir.tar dir
GNU tar will invoke gzip for you and compress the stuff on the way in.
cd ..
tar czvf dir.tgz dir
The first file after the f is the archive to create.
The rest of the arguments are the files to put in the archive.
The problem with tarring up *just the files in the current directory*
is naming them all (including, say, .bashrc) without naming the parent
directory (..) too. I think this will do it:
tar czvf dirfiles.tgz * .[^.]* ..?*
The star will be expanded by the shell (before tar ever sees it,
that's different than how MS-DOS commands work) into all the filenames in
the current directory whose names do not start with a dot.
The first strange expression will be expanded into all the files whose
names begin with dot but not double dot. The second strange expression
will be expanded into all the files whose names begin with dot dot
but contain at least one more character after that.
You didn't want to leave the file ..strangename behind, did you?
Or the system intruder's favorite, the directory named dot-dot-dot?
See why grabbing the directory was easier? GNU tar takes care of
the details.
But remember, tar is recursive: if one of the things you named is
a directory it will get the contents of it.
If you don't mind having an extra directory entry in the tarfile
you can just go
tar czvf dirfiles.tgz .
instead.

I have a weird problem playing mpegs with xanim. I appear to get a frame
rate of only 2-3 frames per second and the video is distorted. However avi's
and qt's play just fine. I have a Matrox Millenium card and am running
RH6.0. The same mpeg's play fine under Win95 with MS Media Player. Are
there any other, better MPEG players for Linux? The KDE player appears to
just be a wrapper around xanim.

Well the US might not be, or it may be with a larger group then just 1
controlling the system...maybe its a committe...or maybe its 2 fighting
over the scraps of the US that are left.
However, in a 3rd world country we very well could be considered that
because we put our puppet in power and run the country like a police
state...always have. Its our government that has put the worst kinds of
people in power, and kept them in power...and then lied about it.

I agree whole heartedly on this point, republicans ARE
fascists....course the democrats are no better or much different.
Really both sides are as shallow as the American people.

If our freedom is costing others their freedom and lives then wether or

are not free.

Not sure what YOUR tasking about but I do not fully agree with the other
party. No you should not be killing the other person, but you should
also NOT run away.

You have it backwards. eth0 should be the cable nic eth1 internal

Slackware 4.0 is one of the best distributions as is. It's your setup
that's messed up. Run netconfig again and make sure you add entries to
/etc/rc.inet1 for eth1. The gateway should be the same as provided by
your ISP. Don't forget to edit /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/hosts. Make
sure your cabling is right too. The cable modem goes in eth0 and eth1 is
part of the internal networks hub or lead terminiator on a coax setup.
Use 192.168.0.1 and up for the internal network. Your static ip from the
ISP is for eth0.

Subject: home network?
Date: Wed, 23 Jun 1999 08:09:24 GMT
ok, this is the story. I am a19yr old university student studying
computer engineering at the university of nsw. I am living on campus
(at college) and have a computer connected to the college network. I
also have access to a lot of spare parts (moslty 486s and early
pentiums) and i know it sounds like a lot of work, but what i would
like to be able to do is connect them all together in one large
network (probably about 4 or 5 computers). Moreover, i would like to
designate my fastest computer to be my main computer, and have it
linked to both my small network and the college network. I am as yet
undecided if i want to be running NT of just win95 on my fastest
computer, but it will probably be one of the two (i have a large
windows software base already built up), What i would like to do is
just treat the other computers as external cpus so that i can shunt
off work to them while reducing the load on my main computer. I am not
sure if this is possible or not...i do know that windows NT supports
not only extensive networking features but also a multi-thread
processing system whereby it will share work between a number of cpus
if they are on a multi-cpu board on the machine nt is running on, but
i do not know whether it can also use external cpus for this
task....ideally i would like to be able to share all cpu loads (i.e.
treat the external cpus as if they were actually a part of the system)
but i know that not all programs support multi-threading
themselves....also if it is more practical to have the main computer
on a peer-peer network and then route that network into the college
network i am quite happy to look into this possibility....i will
probably have the older computers running linux or something as i have
heard it has better networking features than any microsoft
product.....basically, what it all boils down to is that i have a lot
of parts lying around, wish to do something useful with them and am
wondering if anyone can tell me what is possible in this respect....as
may well have become evident i am short on networking expertise, but
as i intend to get a job in the field of networking when i finally get
out of uni i am very willing to learn..thanks heaps to all who reply,
your help is much appreciated..

So you have to turn it off in /etc/modules.conf (or conf.modules). Usually
it doesn't mean you did anything wrong.

Hi,
Is there a package that contains man pages about the standard classes in
C++ ?
I know there are such man pages (sitting in section 3) on SGI, and I
would like to have them on linux.
Thanks,

RedHat 6.0 upgrade is utterly broken, and in spite of dozens of bug
reports from the start, they still have not put out any official
notice or fix. They are really trying to set up a track record of
incredibly shoddy upgrades. 5.1 was very bad, and 6.0 is even worse.
Not just LaTeX is affected. Dozens of packages are upgraded
incompletely. It is a mess.
Try
rpm --verify -a
All packages in which files are flagged as missing (some displayed
messages will just be about changed configuration files which
obviously don't need reinstalling) you should reinstall with
rpm -U --force packagename.rpm
