I know there's going to be an easy answer to this, but.....

My POP server / mail host is returning the error message:

-ERR being read already /usr/spool/mail/mymailfilename

when my mail client tries to check for new mail. Anyone have any ideas
on how to fix this? Here's some relevant points:

. The problem happens with any POP client, running on any OS.
. I can also reproduce the problem by telnetting to port 110 on the
mail host and issuing the USER and PASS commands by hand.
. I can run elm and pine locally on the mail host and read my mail
without a problem.
. I've deleted the file, waited for new mail to come in, same
problem.
. I've deleted & recreated my account on the host, same problem.
. I've deleted my account on the host, created a few dummy users then
recreated my account (therefore my account = new UID), same problem.
. All machines being used are on the same ethernet.
. Rebooting the host also doesn't help. (I thought maybe a rogue
process holding the file locked open).
. I've deleted all / any .lck files I can find, no difference.
. If I cp /usr/spool/mail/mymailfile to /usr/spool/mail/root, then
modify the client to check root's mail (or telnet to port 110, as
above), I get the ERR message. This is after the three delete & recreate
steps described above.

Any ideas gratefully received,

Guy

Well, I've just moved my Sent file, and Netscape works OK now. The file was
almost 30Mb.
Has anyone else encountered Netscape not being able to handle 30Mb files?

Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1999 12:25:28 +0100

Hi.

I bought a SupraMax 56k PCI and it works fine under Windows 9x/NT.
I tried to use it under Red Hat Linux 5.2 and I could not get the modem
to work.

Before I bought it, I checked
http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/hardware/intel/52/rh52-hardware-intel-14.html#ss14.3

and it says that the following (among others) are incompatible modems:

- Plug-and-Play (PNP) modems (these may be set up via isapnptools and
setserial).
- Modems that require software drivers for compression, error
correction, high-speed operation, etc.
    - PCI Memory Mapped Modems (these do not act like serial ports)
        - Internal SupraExpress 56k
        - Internal SupraSonic 56k
        - ...

But is says nothing about SupraMax. So I assumed it would work.

I have read now "Modems: Traditional, Controller-less and Soft" white
paper
http://www.supra.com/products/white-papers/communications/c-less_paper.html

and now I am afraid that is too late.

Is it possible to get the modem working in a different OS other that
Windows 9x/NT ?
And is it possible to get the modem working under Linux ?

Thank you
Goncalo

Make certain that your hosts file on the win98 machine is set up

Hi there,

I use RH6 and have the following problem with floppy disks:

I make backups of certain files to the floopy using "mcopy" and on one
of my two backup floppies (yes I am paranoid about loosing data) gives
me the following error:

Bad FAT entry 2848 at 2847
Bad FAT entry 2848 at 2847
Bad FAT entry 2848 at 2847
Fat error detected

Could this be due to a defect disk? No, I have tried 10+ disks and they
all give me this error.

The one floppy disk that does not give me an error is a very old disk
(of which I have none left).

Why am I experiencing these problems?

Thanks in advance
Torben

I recently re-compiled my kernel (2.2.5-15). When the system boots, it gets
to 'Starting NFS daemon' and hangs with the error: kill_fasync: bad magic
number in fasync_struct

The system will eventually come up in run level 5 (my default). I checked
the message log and it has a problem at the point where it installs knfsd.
When I shutdown the system, it hangs unmounting the file systems and I have
to power off. This cauces a fsck of the root partition at the next boot.

I had changed some of the kernel parameters with xconfig in order to remove
unneeded options, did I remove something I shouldn't? The only network
stuff I need is to connect to my ISP through a dial-up connection. The
dial-up appears to work, but I couldn't access the news server. Any help
would be appreciated.

Well, a welcome text would normally be put into /etc/motd (message of the day)
which is displayed as soon as the user logs on. Might be more difficult if
you use xdm, though.

I am having the EXACT same problem. Just started a couple of days

You can type "TERM=linux" (caps matter) and that will fix it until the
next reboot. Or "TERM=vt100" and so on depending on what it really
should be for your system.

Others have pointed you to /etc/motd. The contents of this are displayed
at login (via console or telnet, anyway.)

What I'd like to add is that versions of Redhat prior to 6.0 would
overwrite the contents of /etc/motd at boot. This was done in
/etc/rc.d/rc.local, if I remember correctly. You'll have to comment
out the commands that do this if you are running an older Redhat version
and you want your changes to motd to stick.

And I should care why?

Put it this way: I download a handful of fractals a week; total traffic
on the order of 5-10Mb per week. Dr. Porn on the other hand, typically
downloads 1-2Mb a minute, when he's on.

Assuming 500Kb/minute for him, and 10Mb/week for me, and assuming he
spends 2 hours a day doing it, his total usage is 420Mb - compared to my
10. You're complaining that I'm having 42 times less impact on things
than Dr. Porn? And your answer to this is to use an approach which is
86,000 times less efficient, in my terms?

Usability isn't a big issue for you, is it? :)

Nope, I didn't say I deleted it. I just can't find it. The system as
installed still boots with the help of the installation CD (NB: not
_from_ the CD); the kernel must be there somewhere.
What happened is this: I installed SuSE 6.1 and set up LILO to boot
Linux and Windoze 95.

This was fine; then I started to play around with LILO. Quite what
happened I don't remember, but I became unable to locate the kernel, so
didn't have anything to put in the image = ... line. IIRC correctly the
lilo.conf provided by YaST (which I managed to delete) didn't specify
any kernel image, ie there was nothing following "image = ".

Unfortunately I have very little (ie no) experience of kernels and have
no idea whether it's normal for them not to be where the handbook says
it should be, or what.

Nope, I didn't say I haven't got a /boot directory. It's still there

to work.

Before I bought it, I checked
http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/hardware/intel/52/rh52-hardware-intel-14.html#ss14.3

and it says that the following (among others) are incompatible modems:

- Plug-and-Play (PNP) modems (these may be set up via isapnptools and
setserial).
- Modems that require software drivers for compression, error
correction, high-speed operation, etc.
    - PCI Memory Mapped Modems (these do not act like serial ports)
        - Internal SupraExpress 56k
        - Internal SupraSonic 56k
        - ...

But is says nothing about SupraMax. So I assumed it would work.

I have read now "Modems: Traditional, Controller-less and Soft" white
paper
http://www.supra.com/products/white-papers/communications/c-less_paper.html

and now I am afraid that is too late.

Is it possible to get the modem working in a different OS other that
Windows 9x/NT ?
And is it possible to get the modem working under Linux ?

Thank you
Marco Costa

There are a number of X client front-ends that provide a pretty, GUI interface
to the CD recording commandline tools. Look for "xcdroast" or "cdrtoaster" on
Freshmeat or Linuxburg.

You might check /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot to see if there is a copy
of the kernel lurking there. It may be called bzImage or zImage. If
you find it, just copy it to /boot as vmlinuz. On the other hand,
re-making it isn't very hard.

Nope; and the former is more user-friendly than the latter. Smaller,
easier to store, less prone to sound degradation from scratching.

And the former is more user-friendly than the latter. True, both horse
and car "get sick" - but cars are generally more readily and rapidly
repaired. There's no need to carry a poop scoop around. Cars go
considerably faster and considerably further in the same amount of time.

And the former is...

Oh, yeah, *that's* why it's going to take over. Missed that point, did
you?

Is it Lie-nux or Lynn-ux? I've heard it both ways.

Thanks.

This is *truly* disturbing. Does this mean that Microsoft can hold users
responsible for BSODs? After all, despite what we uppity Unix geeks might
think, the "normal functioning" of Microsoft ware is to do stuff, not to
crash. And if it's determined by the copyright holder, all MS has to do
is declare working to be the normal state of affairs.

Talk about a new connotation of "illegal instruction"...

Last I checked, that license did _not_ include how to rebuild an engine.

You had a point?
