There are absolutely no umlaut sound in the name of Sousa. I'm not even

I am not sure what you mean by "work against" a router. But tkined, which
uses TclTk plus the scotty extension, will give you some monitering tools for
snmp work. Iptraf will let you moniter ethernet and other devices.

Andrew, if you are in N. Va. like I am, you are probably on the
Roadrunner/Media General system. They, and most cable modem SPs use
dynamic IP assignment. You need to run a DHCP client. If you
absolutely need a static address, you are SOL. OTOH, checkout
www.tzo.com, www.dynip.com, www.dyndns.com for ways around a dynamic
address.

The way these things are handled on heavy-weight Unices is:
/dev/console, /dev/fb and /dev/audio all magically have the same
permissions (stops many annoyance attacks as well as more serious
stuff.)
All open()s of /dev/audio are exclusive. Anyone wanting sound
multiplexing had better do it in software on top...
The first is tricky on Linux, what with virtual consoles, but the
second is (probably) trivial to do. And quite possibly what is done
already! (I'm not grepping the kernel source just to find out...)

Here are the answers:
Yes, No, Yes
AGP Graphic Cards work fine with linux (I'm using an ELSA Erazor II in one box
and an ELSA Winner Office in an other box; both are AGP Cards).
PCI Graphic Cards will also work with linux and Win98.
Buy what you want.

KDE is up and running much smoother now!!
Suspecting that Linux was not using all the 64meg RAM available, I ran
the "free" utility. The report showed that Linux was only using 16 meg
out of 64 meg of RAM.
My Linux boots using LOADLIN. LOADLIN has the option mem= which allows
specifing RAM size. I added to the LOADLIN command the option mem=64m
and booted Linux. I logged in as ROOT. I executed "free" and total
memory in use was 64meg. Then I executed "startx" and KDE came up and
ran much smoother and quicker.
The option to specify RAM size for Linux that uses LILO is in the LILO
config file in /etc.

Did you download and compile it or did you just use the one distributed
on the cd? Xanim has hooks for proprietary codecs that I dont think are
allowed to be distributed except for from the xanim webpage, so it may
help to download the source code and codecs from the xanim web page and
compile it yourself.

There's a NT vs Linux test done recently in Germany as well. Yes, NT is
faster
than Linux in the benchmark test, said the German magazine, BUT in the
real world, when you're running cgi, perl and so on, Linux wins hands
down...
But I know know if Linux beats NT when NT is running VBscript, .asp and
so on.
I cannot read too much German. The article was in German, and I don't
have the url off hand.
It really doesn't matter to me. I'll use a stable OS over a flaky one
like NT anytime.
And I've been using NT since 3.5. In fact, I'm converting everything
over to Linux and BSD.

Respectfully, judgements such as the about about the American
people are just as bad as any number of other stupid and
jingoistic statements that I could make about other countries.
There are cultural issues in any country, and to make gross
generalizations like the above are the same kind of thing that
would cause numerous flames if an American made such claims
about any other country or culture.
The biggest problem with Americans is that they don't demand
respect, and have allowed an inferiority complex to develop
because of generally incorrect statements like the above.
Perhaps it is the individual kindness of the American
individual who allows themselves to be characterized as
'shallow', and then questions this and worrying that it
might be true... Often, interpretations of shallowness
are mistakes, and simply due to the lack of sophistication
in the observer. This seems to be invariant, whoever the
observer or observed... Think about the European conquesting
the 'primitive' cultures, and the simple view that they
originally had... The vast over simplification of other
cultures is not just an American problem, but frankly is
prevalent. This is even an issue in the Orient (please
don't try to claim that neither the Japanese nor Chinese are
chauvinistic!!!)
There are some problems with the culture, and sure, there
are some *individuals* who are shallow (read: provincial, or
those of limited sophisitcation), but I have met provincial
people from numerous cultures, and I don't really consider
it to be anything important. (Okay, there are certain things
in certain cultures that I find to be disgusting, if not
nauseating, but I don't often consider their beliefs or
activities to be 'wrong', but just unacceptable for me to
follow.)

Check out the following reports at PCVATech:
http://www.pcavtech.com/soundcards/reports/index.htm
Of these, the real standout on a decent-sounding-input-facilities-to-price
basis is the (original) Ensoniq 1370. I picked up an OEM one for
about $20. I haven't yet had the occasion to use it for recoding, but
I hope to soon.
As for Linux support, it's supported by ALSA, and by OSS/Free.
There are drivers for it in the 2.2.x series of kernels. I'm using
ALSA because the drivers that came with RH5.2 aren't particularly
good.
