Well, first of all su is not sudo. su is superuser aka root. sudo is a
program that allows end-users to login and sudo to a restricted root
account. You can find it on freshmeat and sourceforge. The only other
option is making a dummy account by duping the root lines in /etc/passwd
and /etc/shadow. However, this will only make a duplicate root user, not
a restricted root user.

Yes, you can. But it is not very secure. I mean, anything using Secure
keys is supposed to have a prompt. But there is a very easy way around
it. Create a password flat file and store it anywhere on the server you
are connecting from. You can use this syntax:
scp file.file user@blah: </etc/password.scp

To clarify. Can I set minicom to drop it's connection to a TTY in a
timeout fashion of lets say 300 seconds? Is this at all possible? I am
having the TTY locked when I drop my SSH connection then I cant even
force kill the minicom process and am resorted to rebooting the server.

df will give you the information on all MOUNTED drives/partitions. Even
though a disk may be in the floppy drive it may not be mounted. That is
the only reason I can think off that it is not working.

What I found is to set two variables;
MOZILLA_HOME=(wherever netscape is, mine is /usr/lib/netscape)
CLASSPATH=${CLASSPATH}:$MOZILLA_HOME/java/classes
I put these in my ~/.bashrc and it has since found java40.jar
Good luck,

Have you added the regular users to the sudoers file? You need to use
'visudo', which will start up a special version of vi and automatically
edit the sudoers file. Add entries for users. Note, though, that
if you just copy the entry that is already in there (for root), you
will give the users full permissions, which you *don't* want to do.
Look at the man page for sudoers, and only give them permission to
run kppp.

Subject: mysterious problem with man reformatting
Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 16:48:45 GMT
I have a package (Kerberos 4) I just installed using a rpm I made
myself. I have managed to install it, and it is even working, but I
have a problem with man. Kerberos creates its own directory, called
/usr/athena. This has a man subdirectory, called man. This in turn has
subdirectories called cat1, cat3, cat8, man1, man3, man5, man8. Ok,
now I needed to add /usr/athena/man to my MANPATH environment
variable. Ok, now whn man reformats an entry in man say man1/kinit1,
it tries to save the reformatted version in /cat1, but gets permission
denied. I took a look at the permissions for this, and saw that the
owner was set as the default root. I changed the owner to man for the
cat1, cat2, and cat3 directories, and thought this would fix the
problem, but it didn't!
I have
faheem /usr/athena/man>ls -la
total 9
drwxr-xr-x 9 root root 1024 Sep 13 12:19 .
drwxr-xr-x 9 root root 1024 Sep 13 12:19 ..
drwxr-xr-x 2 man root 1024 Sep 13 12:26 cat1

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Sep 13 12:19 man3
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Sep 13 12:19 man5
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Sep 13 12:19 man8
and I get the error message.
faheem ~>man kinit
Reformatting kinit(1), please wait...
man: can't create /usr/athena/man/cat1/12434: Permission denied
man: can't unlink /usr/athena/man/cat1/12434: No such file or
directory
Note that, not surprisingly, I can reformat the man page as root. Ie
root> man kinit
and it gets saved to cat1 with no problem. Obviously, this is a
permissions problem, and I should have enough experience to figure it
out, but I can't. I thought it might be that the permissions in the
directories above were causing problems, but /var/cache/man is
similar, and seems to work OK.
Ie.
faheem /var/cache/man>ls -la
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 1024 Sep 3 1999 ..
drwxr-xr-x 17 man root 1024 Sep 13 00:10 X11R6
drwxr-xr-x 17 man root 1024 Sep 3 1999 allman
drwxr-xr-x 2 man root 1024 Aug 23 10:59 cat1
etc...

scilab and octave both are broadly scientific in nature. I can give
you more specific references on request, but a simple web seach will
probably suffice. Both are quite mainstream, and scilab, at least,
even has its own newsgroup. Octave doen't have a GUI, though scilab
sort of has one. Both will probably require a certain amount of work
to learn. Octave is supposed to be quite similar to Matlab. I have
never used either seriously though, so can't tell you much about them.
Another possibility, though probably not what you want, is the
statistical analysis package called R. It can do basic math stuff and
is quite good with plots, though it doesn't have a GUI either, at
least, not on Linux.
All the above are quite impressive, elaborate prorgrams with
significant numbers of people using them, and active ongoing development.
Feel free to email me if you need further assistance.
Best regards, Faheem Mitha.

Mandrake would suit you much better. It's based on Redhat and has all the

I am running Debian 2.2, kernel 2.2.17pre6 and a SoundBlaster Live using
the Creative/Emu module.
Try as I might I cannot record anything!
When I say I cannot record I mean that, although I can create a file by
using something like Gramofile, Sound-recorder or KRecord, when it is
played back it produces silence (not a scientifically accurate statement)!
The file size increases by about 8MB per minute.
If I boot the machine into Windows 95 (shudder!!!) I can record and
playback successfully and I can play the recorded .wav file back using
Linux. The recorded file produced by Linux also produces silence under
windows.
I have tried recording as a user and as root - no difference.
/dev/dsp has rw permission for owner and group.
I am running KMix and am using the line input socket on the card.
Recording volume for line input is at maximum. I put all recording
sliders up to be on the safe side and there is sound coming out of the
speakers.
I'm clean out of ideas. Any helpful suggestions will be _very_ gratefully
recieved.

Try both and pick the one you like most. My personal favourite is GNOME
(by a long long way) but make sure you get the upgrade to the latest

What you are looking for is informally called tcpwrappers. You use the

I'm writing a makefile (gnu-make, if it matters) for a java project and
one of the things I need to do is scan a directory and get a list of all
the jar files in it and compose a classpath variable from that list.
here's what I've got so far:
DESTINATION = /some/dir
CLASSPATH = $(wildcard $(shell find $(DESTINATION) -name "*.jar" -prune
-print 2>/dev/null))
what this gives me is a value for $(CLASSPATH) that looks like this:
/some/dir/foo.jar /some/dir/lib/bar.jar /some/dir/baz.jar ...
what I need is a way to replace the spaces separating each element with
colons (":") so that the value for $(CLASSPATH) looks like this:
/some/dir/foo.jar:/some/dir/bar.jar:/some/dir/baz.jar:...
I looked through the find man page and thought the -printf option looked
promising, but I couldn't get it to give me what I wanted.
anyone with suggestions can mail them to ethan(at)vonderweid(dot)com
