Subject: How do I create a simple server to accept requests on a port?
Date: Thu, 08 Jun 2000 15:30:09 GMT

If it's Linux it's possible.....

I want to set up a service, foo, to accept requests on port 999 using tcp.
I want that service to kick off a Perl script, foo.pl, to append a new
piece of data to a file, foo.conf...

I can setup the /etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf

inetd.conf:
foo stream tcp nowait foo /usr/lib/scripts foo.pl

services:
foo 999/tcp foo #my foo script

What do I need to do to the perl script to extract the data I need to add
to the file? The data can be any length and all the data should fit into
one tcp packet. Also, there is only one argument, "foo-data".

Is there a standard script to extract the data portion? Or something
simple to use or call?

Hello,

I recently scanned in 700mb worth of music CD's onto my Windows98 partition
using RealJukebox so I wouldn't have to bring the CD's into work everyday. I
would love to be able to play my "Real Media" format music in Linux instead
of Windows. The file type for the files is listed as "RealSystem Secure
Media Clip."

Does anyone know of a RealJukebox Player or converter for Linux?

Thanks in advance.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Here is a followup with an imperfect solution:
  - obtain/download netscape navigator 4.73 tarball from netscape.com
  - install in /opt/netscape (stay away from default location)
  - If I run /opt/netscape/netscape it still gives bus error
  - Suse has published a "nsfix.rpm" in their support database.
Naturally it doesn't function on a redhat install, but by
using the rpm options "--noscripts --notriggers" I could open it
up and pull out a shell script, which I then used to make
a "Netscape" wrapper shell script, and a libnspipepatch.so library.
(earlier I'd tried using these with my default netscape 4.72 install
    from Redhat, with no success)
  - copy "Netscape" shell script from the suse nsfix.rpm file
    into /opt/netscape
  - If I run /opt/netscape/Netscape, it now runs!
    (I do get a warning about libc.so.5)
  - for completeness I also copy libnspipepatch.so from the suse package
    into /opt/netscape

  Finally to cleanup:
    cd /usr/bin
    mv netscape netscape.ORIG
    ln -s /opt/netscape/Netscape netscape

Now I can run netscape off of the icon in my task bar, and from
the command line I can run it without changing my path.

This is a hack, but it works. Pulling the script out of the suse
rpm is non-trivial, so I hope that Redhat or Netscape (or Gnome
for that matter) come up with a better fix.

I've been using 6.0 for quite some time and tried to update pppd from 2.3.7
to 2.3.10a.

Well , I found that now I have to say "noauth" to prevent it from trying to
authenticate the remote end. Taken care of.
Then I find that it does not modify the default route !!

oookay....Now the old one did so and I am wondering if this not changing the
default route is something over looked or is it deliberate.
Of course, I can use the ip-up.local script to set the table on my own but,
I'd like to know why 2.3.7 did it and 2.3.10a did not.
Or is 2.3.10a a bad one to use ?

TIA.

OK, I solved it with the 2.2.14 kernel putting it on a
6.1 installer bootnet (update) floppy.

Got installed Win98 and RH 6.1 this morning on a 40GB hard disk.
(Also thanks to the kind advice of two NG readers advising me how
to configure lilo).
Booting Win98 and Linux via OS208BETA, a multi boot loader sitting in the
MBR did the job for me.

Now I have the following problem:

I still have 32GB unpartitioned space available and want to create
a /home partition of say, 28 GB.

I invoked cfdisk and cfdisk told me :
FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 1: Partition ends after end-of-disk
Press any key to exit cfdisk

What now?

I'm a bit hesitating to proceed with fdisk (linux) with all the
history I experienced (linux wiping out and messing the partition table
three times - costing me three days of hairpulling).

Subject: [Help:] Advice on SMP machines required
Date: Thu, 08 Jun 2000 17:07:32 +0200

Hi,
We have to buy a new computing server. Of course, it'll be a
machine running Linux. But we haven't reached a consensus regarding
the kind of hardware. It's already decided that we'd like a
multiprocessor SMP machine. The first configuration we had in mind was
a tetra Pentium III. However, our local hardware suppliers say that
the architecture of the Intel Pentium III processor doesn't allow for
a tetra processor configuration. According to them, we'll have to use
Pentium III Xeon processors. Can you provide with some information in
this regard? Do you know of any tetra Pentium III, not Xeon, machine?

Our only problem with the Xeon processors is their high
price. May be I'm wrong, but I think they are overpriced, I mean, I'm
not really sure that the increase in price really pays for the
increase in performance. Have any of you any experiences in this
regard? Do you know of any reliable benchmark for these processors?

In addition, although I've seen some ads offering this kind
of servers (tetra Pentium III Xeon) in some magazines (e.g. Linux
Journal) I'm not aware of any open source software (i.e. compilers,
libraries, etc.) which really takes the best out of the Xeon
processors. Is this appreciation right?

There's also the possibility of using AMD Athlon processors, but
I
think I've read somewhere that the SMP kernel part doesn't work very
well with AMD processors. Can you confirm or reject this point?

Finally, I would thank whatever proposal for parallel
computing configuration (other than beowulf-like clusters). We are
interested in a real single machine, rather than in a group of
independent machines tied together through netword cards.

I'd really appreciate all your feedback.
        Thanks a lot in advance!!
        Greetings.

I installed Redhat 6.1 on a 40 GB hard disk together with Win98.
fdisk now tells me the following:

Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 4982 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

I remember that I only created a 2GB FAT (Win98 - precautiously instead
of type 0x0f - maybe can convert later), a 16 MB /boot, a 512 MB swap
and a 3GB /root partition in the custom gnome install of Redhat6.1.

Why does fdisk show me the (imo unpartitioned space as a extended
partition of 37969627+ 5 Extended

Could it be that the Win98 install did that automatically?

How would I proceed best now without running into danger of
wiping out everything again?

I find myself in a very difficult situation since I have to accomplish
miracles but I'm only new to this Linux world...
I have the following situation

A Windows NT server Installed as a VPN server. Netcard(1) attached to
the Internet with an fixed address an other netcard(2) on the intranet
with a private address(10.1.1.1).

On the other hand a linux server (Redhat 6.2) with one netcard on a
intranet (192.168.1.1) and a PPP connection with an IP address assigned
by the ISP.
I have installed ipchains for masquering on this server and this is
working very well(why should it not) even from a client connected at
the linux private netcard. (The client has IP address 192.168.1.2)
Telnet, ftp, www, it all seems to work very fine from this client.

However when I try to make a VPN connection from the client, it is not
working.
It seems like packets are going out and coming in(there is some
activity with the tcpdump on the linux) but I can not get any
connection.

Any ideas why this is not working???

thanxs,
Tom

I'm not sure why xdm is giving you problems, but you can usually

I use pmfirewall (htp://www.pointman.com).
I have used it for several months.
It has a very nice and easy setup, when it is first instlled, which
makes it easy for newbies like me.
It uses ipchians.
It was recommended by Nicholas Peterly in a recent issue of Infoworld.
I tested it using some of the port sweeps avaialable on the net, and
it came through with flying colors.
It has blocked several break in attempts.

You need to patch your kernel using John Hardin's IP MASQ VPN patch
and you need to install ipfwd. Links are available from my site at
http://seawall.sourceforge.net. You might also want to consider installing
my firewall on your Linux box as it makes configuring PPTP masquerading
very easy. Details are available at the above site...

When I try to install ImageMagick-5.2.0 I get the following errors when

I'm doing a normal installation with:
./configure
make
make install

on an RedHat 6.2 Linux machine.

Does anyone now what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance

Lars
