First thing is that a linux driver will do you no good....got to have
linux already installed to use it. <G>
As to the real problem , I would get on the net go to the manufactures
homepage or drivers.com or some such and DL the win and hopefully DOS
drivers for the thing. If you get DOS drivers you have it licked as
almost all cdroms are supported by linux and auto detected.

Date: Fri, 25 Jun 1999 16:32:30 -0800

This is probably going to be an easy one.

When I try to install some rpm files on redhat 5.2, I get an
error message that says:

failed dependencies:
    glib >= 1.2.2 is needed by ____________
    gtk+ >= 1.2.2 is needed by ____________

this has happened with GNOME and XMMS. Can someone please
tell me what these glib and gtk+ are and where I can get the
latest version?

I would like these in .rpm format if I can get it, but if
not, I'll settle for something else.

Thanks,
Eric

Probably not. Note that CGI mostly does string handling. And string
handling is something that Perl and similar languages do very well.
Do you think you can write better string handling code that Larry Wall?
If so, you are welcome to contribute to perl development. And this is
probably better investment of time than to reinvent a wheel again and
again for each new CGI.

Other thing is a question arised in original posting - if you write
it on perl, it would run on almost any machine which could run Web
server without any changes. If you write it on C you are going into
trouble of recompiling (and actually porting it) for each new machine
you move it to. Go to the nearest bookshop and look for O'Reilly book
about porting unix software. There is some 400 pages of traps you may
fall into. And nothing like that if you write on Perl, Tcl, Python or
Scheme.

If you use afio, instead of tar, you can pretty easily
encrypt the files with pgp as they're written to tape.

not sure what good researching my "area of expertise" would do. But to give
you a bit of background...
I have gotten excited about some new tcl/tk program maybe four times
so far. EVERY TIME, it required some custom build of one, if not both, of the
libraries.

The ones I remember off the top of my head were:
-- a free GUI SNMP manager
 -- doing japanese text

The rest were mostly network related, I think.

Mike, unless things have changed recently there's no free version of the
grap filter. Or any version of grap for Linux rather than Unix.

grap is a pic preprocessor, originally written at Bell Labs by Jon Bentley.
It's no doubt still distributed as part of the commercial Documenter's
Workbench package. (Check the comp.text FAQ for more details; these days
you would buy it from Lucent.)

Several years back a partial reimplementation of grap called `prag' was
written, but I don't believe it was released under GPL. The source code
for prag is available, though.

I'd be interested in seeing a free version of grap written; any takers?
The version of `pic' in my plotutils package (see below), called
`pic2plot', can parse pic input and produce output in numerous modern
graphics formats (PS/EPS, PCL 5, PNM, pseudo-GIF, Illustrator, etc.).
It would be good to have a version of grap to go with it.

This sounds like a ROM-BIOS/CD-ROM compatibility problem rather than a
Linux problem. Try the "support" section of the CD-ROM vendor's website
to see how to disable UDMA on the drive. It will be slower, but it
should work.

Am in the same boat Uwe: Win 98 on /hda , OpenLinux2.2 on /hdb1, SuSE on

There is Boot Magic that ships with the OpenLinux which is nice but I'm
looking for a way to logon first via OpenLinux (it has kdm a great login
interface) and then decide if I should go to Win98. Looks like kbootsel
might do it if I can get the thing to install or a fancy lilo.conf set up.

Any ideas anyone?

Also configuring my sound card is not obvious - where do I look?

Many thanks.

Have a feeling Multi-Boot Win98/Linuxes is the future ;-)
