Lessee...
Using SuSe 6.3, kernal 2.2.35 or so. 3dfx voodoo and plenty of ram
(remembering when 8 meg was a ton). Most of the time I go straight to a
graphical interface. Until very recently I had been using fvwm2. I
have almost decided to switch to kde (drag and drop to a desktop is an
advantage) I have some questions on kde that I have not been able to
find in the manuals.
1. How to I make an automatically started app goto a specific window?
2. At the moment I have to su to root to manually start the sound and
then restart X to get sound on kde. After that it works fine. How can
I make the sound come on automatically? (I use oss as the main sound
program as far as I know.)
3. Can I get kde to use au sounds? If no.. I have a couple of classic
au's that I am very fond of... how would I convert them?
4. Is it at all possible to replace the pager used in kde with the one
used in fvwm2? I LOVE that old pager..... and it has been the main
reason I have not switched yet.
Thanks much for the help.

OK, I'll look into automounter.
But it really seems like it should work if I put an entry in fstab like
this:
//BRUCE/LANDRIVE /mnt/landrive smbfs user,rw,otheroptions 1 1
In fact, there's a script during bootup called netfs (?) that calls:
mount -a -t smbfs
And I see on the screen that this happens during bootup and is [OK]
But when I get to the console as ROOT, theres nothing at mnt/landrive. If I
then run mount -a -t smbfs, it works fine. The landrive appears.
Also I can't run mount -a -t smbfs as any other user than root, despite the
fact that user is specified in netfs. So perhaps these options are not
being read inproperly...
Thanks, Bruce

If you have an OLD backpack then you are in luck.. simply use the boot
disk and look for the microsolutions parallel port.
Unfortunantly, SuSe does not recognize their NEW (RW) backpack external

Perhaps you are thinking of backing store, whereby the X server
remembers for the app what was drawn in a window, instead of asking the
app to redraw what was once in the window.

It is sure. If partition fished on 1028 , next must start from 1029. In
your situation it overlaps (what fdsik is saying).
If you have Dos partition (Fat32 or 16) you must create extended partition,
preferably using fdisk from linux, not from Dos.
You have to remove, and start from the begining, you messed to much.

God I hate it when people say this. Usually in effort to make someone
look bad and make yourself look like you really, truly cared. If you knew
someone personally on that sub, I apologize. Otherwise, I somehow doubt
that you were actually grieving their loss. I don't even know any of their
names, so as of yet, it's a number in the headlines.
Besides, I'm sure the guy didn't find the deaths themselves amusing, he
was just writing a little humor to make fun of Microsoft.

IOW, it's a market barrier inherent to the way in which software
works and how software interfaces (or at least the implementations
that hide) them are things that can be owned.
[deletia]
Any competitor to microsoft not only has to replicate the OS,
but all of the device drivers and all of the 3rd party apps.
They also have to ensure that all of this will be where the
consumers can get to it. At times, this last bit has just been
plain impossible due to Microsoft's racketeering activities.

Use port forwarding for the other server. If yours is running on port 80,
though, your roommate's IIS will need to be forwarded from a different port
(say, port 81). The URL for your server's homepage will be
http://www.yourdomain.com, while his will be http://www.yourdomain.com:81
(or whatever port you decide to use).
If the idea of tacking on ":81" to the URL isn't too appealing, you can set
up Apache on your server to have http://www.roommates-domain.com go to a
redirect page to http://www.yourdomain.com:81. In this case, the IP
addresses associated with www.yourdomain.com and www.roommates-domain.com
need to be the same.

My basic need: I have a Linux (RH 5.x) server and a Linux (RH 6.x)
desktop. My wife has a Mac (OS 8.x). All machines are networked (IP
and also AppleTalk for the Mac). I have a (SCSI) tape drive in the
server. I want all three machines backed up to the one tape drive.
1) When I use GNU tar to do a remote backup from the Linux client like so:
tar zcvf username@server:/dev/nst0 dir_to_backup/
everything is fine. Then I rewind the tape on the server:
mt rewind
And issue another command from the client to view the backup file
tar ztf username@server:/dev/nst0
I see the files there, but I also get this message:
gzip: stdin: decompression OK, trailing garbage ignored
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
What does this mean?
2) After I issue TWO backup commands (with no rewind in between) I can
view each of them in turn. But if I try to use the "mt" commands
on the server to set the tape to the beginning of the second backup
(using "mt fsf 1" or similar) it doesn't work.
2) I would like to backup the Mac to the same tape. I found someone
who theorized that created a Mac client to rmt (which is what the
remote tar seems to be doing) should be pretty easy. Does anyone
know of a Mac rmt client? Or is there a version of tar that
supports both remote files and the Mac?

I am learning linux by installing a linux (LFS).
I have three levels of same linux in different partitions.
One I mess around, one before I mess around and one all tested.
I can boot any of them via lilo. I am running out of space so,
1. I formated one of them which has 2 gig. with P-Magic .
2. I commented out the that partition in lilo.conf and ran lilo -v -t and
every thing OK. So I update MBR with lilo -v. Went well.
3. When I boot it,I got "ERROR- You should have 'ro' on the looplinux.bat"

Subject: Looking for recomendation to replace Netscape mail/news reader
Date: Sun, 17 Sep 2000 14:33:26 -0400
I have been using Netscape for some time now as my mail/news reader.
Like all of life, it has its good and bad points. I want GUI based mail
& news readers that support html and Netscape does that.
What I want that it doesn't provide is support for multiple pop3
accounts and PGP or GnuPG signature and encryption/decryption support.
When I search for replacements I see a myriad of mail and/or news
readers that are GUI based. Some support PGP, others support HTML, but
so far I have not found one that does both. I have loaded and tried
several, but installing and trying them all is quite time consuming and
I still might miss the one that does what I want.
I don't mind using two products. One for news and the other for mail.
Still, I would want the ability to apply or check PGP news message
signatures.
If someone could point me to a component that does what I am looking for
I would really appreciate it.

I have an "Intel Pro/100+ Manaagement Adapter" card in each of my machines.
One machine runs Linux only, the other runs Linux most of the time and Windows
95 some of the time. I have VA Linux Systems version of Red Hat 6.0 on this
machine, and vanilla Red Hat 6.0 on the other. I do not recall doing much to
hook them up, and I never did it before, so it cannot be very difficult. I have
an APC surge protector in the cable between the two machines, a long straight
Class 5 cable from the old machine to the surge protector, and a 1 foot long
crossover cable (hub substitute) from the surge protector to this machine. I
did have to install Samba on this machine so the other machine could talk to
this one when running in Windows mode, and turn on nfs on this machine so I
could share files and printer when the other machine is running Linux. I do not
really use the network for much except to share the printer. 100Megabit LAN
seems fast enough for that. ;-)
I did setup dns so the machines could talk to each other, but that just
involved making and entry or two in /etc/hosts and regenerating the other files
for named (bind) with the h2n program (described in the cricket book). THe dns
on the other machine is a slave to this one.

Learn vi then use the vi emulation mode, viper, in Emacs to gain access
to
the some of the nicer Emacs features like the JDE (Java development
environment).
That way you'll never be without an editor and you can easily gain
access to what you need
at a given time. (Plus I think that the emacs key bindings are a little
too verbose and cumbersome.)
Of course this is JMHO.

I have an NEC MultiSync FE700 monitor, Red Hat Linux 6.0, and a Matrox G200
AGP video card. The monitor has a relay in it that clicks off the power to
the CRT if the synch is not right. When I do C-A-F1, etc., to go from
X Window System to CLI, it clicks off and back on within a second (my
impression, not timed). I never thought to see what was going on, though.
Perhaps the video driver takes a moment to set up and the synch detector
notices the gap and flicks off for a moment.

Date: Sun, 17 Sep 2000 12:43:31 -0500
Since installing NS v4.75 java has not worked for me. When I
access a java-enabled site, I get two warning boxes:
=====[the first]====
Java reported the following error on startup:
java.lang.SecurityException: system classes where not signed
====================
and:
----[the second]----
Warning: JIT compiler "jit" not found. Will use interpreter.

and java refuses to function. I have the MOZILLA_HOME variable
pointing to where the netscape binary lives, and the CLASSPATH
includes /usr/lib/netscape/java/classes/java40.jar.
I have the Blackdown v1.1.8 jdk installed and have tried Sun's
java plugin to use this instead of the built-in java (StarOffice
has no problem with java sites using the Blackdown jdk) but from
what I can tell, the Sun java plugin is only enabled if the
applet asks for it. What else needs to be changed to allow NS
v4.75 to use java? It worked fine with v4.73 and before, and as
I mentioned, StarOffice has no problem using java, so what's
going on here?
