There's another pronunciation to contend with. Here in The Plains of West
Texas it's Lye-nix.

So I think as long as everyone knows what everyone else is talking about,
Linus is right, it doesn't matter.

As long as it starts with and L and ends with an X, I think we all get the
idea. (:

As an idea, one might set PROMPT_COMMAND (in bash), which is
executed before each prompt is issued. That command could be
a shell script to check if the directory was modified. I can
think of hackish script which store directory size or listing,
then check against that. However, your objective is a moving
target, so it makes little sense for me to waste my time working
out a specific solution.
You also mentioned that you would make a new FS, but I think
that is a bit much (unless you just want to do it for fun) because
you could just make some pseudo-shell, perhaps one which checks if
/foo/bar was part of the command, then do something based on that.
But again, I'm uncertain of your goal, so that might be overkill
as well, and besides there is probably a simpler solution I'm not
thinking of.

I respectfully disagree. While floppy tapes may not be the best
choice, I don't think they are a bad choice based on my own
experience. I'm using a QIC-3020 (Conner 3200) device with a
high-speed 2MBits/sec controller and have found it to be reliable and
quite speedy. I have had no problems, but I would consider going to
SCSI just to get a better user interface backup program such as
BackAgain/2.

I have used Seagate (now Veritas) Backup Exec, BackMaster and
Backmaster Ultra, andNova Back for OS/2. There's something about each
of them I hate, but Backup Exec works the best in spite of its
perfectly horrible and hated user interface. I have found all the
programs I tried to be reliable in that they can safely backup and
restore properly. But, again, this is not to say it is the best
solution, only that I have found it to be a satisfactory solution.

As a person whose name has been repeatedly mispronounced (here
in the US as well as in my native country), I would have to disagree.
It's ignorance that most often drives the mispronunciation, rather
than disrespect. And ignorance is okay, as long as you're seriously
willing to learn, isn't it?

Oh, BTW, if you're wondering, I call it "lie-nux". The
'justification' I advance is: if the "U" in Unix is "yoo",
then the "I" in Linux must be "eye".

Aye?

1) What file do i change to tell RedHat to start X windows automatically and
set the default environmnent to KDE?

2) I installed WordPerfect 8 off the RedHat CD, but i can't find a way to
uninstall it, other than deleting the directory i installed into.

I'm assuming by "scowling" you mean lines or squiggles appearing on screen?

But yes - if the screen doesn't look right, it's likely the Horizontal and/
or vertical refresh. If you've got your modem manual, check the settings in
there - and instead of entering a preset value enter the value manually.

The BeBox contains 2 603e PowerPC processors. SheepShaver is not, nor has it ever
been a processor emulation. It actually runs MacOS native on the PowerPC
processor. SheepShaver for BeOS only runs on PowerPC platforms. Yes. You would
need the ROM images if you're not running it on a Mac, but to use SheepShaver in
Linux, you would need a PowerPC system such a BeBox, PREP or CHRP.

Yes... this is a great idea but does only solve the problem of accessing the

http://myserver.com/info/ -> http://otherserver.com/~user24/info/
http://myserver.com/info/new/ -> http://otherserver.com/~user24/info/new/

Again, I would like to keep the first address in the URL-field but

I never tried using "defblk". I just checked the man page, and it says
"defblksize" sets the default block size, whereas "setblk" only sets
it for the current tape. I've used setblk -- actually setblk 0, which says
"block size could be anything so do your best", and that worked at your
10-15 MB per minute speed on a DDS1 drive (doing straight tar -xvf -- I
don't know why you needed to go via dd).

Maybe defblksize doesn't actually work. Or maybe there's something funny
about your drive firmware that confuses the scsi driver.

Check what numbers you are getting and then check the LILO docs because near the
end they detail what each step of the boot process is, and what it means when
each letter of L-I-L-O gets printed out. Also the numbers you see tell you the
errors. For instance I was getting an L and then 01 01 01 forever, telling me
there was a problem accessing the map file - adding the linear option helped in
my case (large drive - old BIOS ('95)...go figure). Sorry I can't be more
specific, but I only have experience with the problems I was having with my 8.4
gig drive..but I too was using the NT bootloader. If you get any part of LILO
printed out, then it is safe to say (I think) that the NT bootloader is loading
the bootsect.lin file you made, so the problem would then be with the LILO
configuration.

Hi guys,

Does anyone know if there's a command line interface for linuxconf? I tried
to going to it's homesite but I haven't been able to get through for a
while. I've setup virtual email domains using linuxconf but I'm having the
damndest time figuring out how to adapt my scripts to use the virtual
domain. E.g., I've got some scripts that rely on passwd, useradd, etc. but
none of them have an option to specify that they should use the virtual
domain's config files (e.g., /etc/passwd, etc.) instead of the normal one.
Anyone else have a similar problem?

Thanks in advance,

Rick.

Hi

I have a problem with vgetty/mvm. Whenever I try to do something that
involves writing to the harddrive (eg leaving a message or creating an
account) it gives an error and stops. The error messages are:

vgetty: Nested command in shell script
vgetty: could not write to shell
vgetty: Could not handle event, something failed

See below for more detail from the vgetty.ttyS1 log.

I suspect it has something to do with file permissions, but I can't seem to
figure it out.

Also there is a comment in the voice_script.sh file under the BUGS section
that it should not be run under root. What does this mean and how to I
prevent it running under root?

Thanks
Austin

Subject: RH6.0 - mouse problem in text mode
Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 18:21:27 +0200

I am running RH6.0 and have a normal serial logitech mouse (3 buttons)
on /dev/ttyS0 configured by mouseconfig as "Microsoft" type. (I guess it
is an alias for "ms").
In X mode my mouse works perfectly.
In text mode with the gpm daemon running, I see the mouse moving as I
want and the copy & paste feature works too.
The problem is when I run Midnight Commander. The buttons don't work (I
cannot pull down the menus, moving through the directories and so on).
Something much strange happen when using Lynx. The left button doesn't
work and pressing the middle one, lynx seems to enter in a loop moving
everywhere, changing url, saving configurations (???).
Running the mev utility I can see the mouse events are trapped correctly
(each button is identified, press and release events too, movements too
and so on).
Before using RH6.0 I have used for a few days a Debian distribution and
in that case the mouse was working correctly both in text and X modes.

Another thing I don't understand:
Running linuxconf (both in text mode or within KDE and with my mouse
moving on the screen), and quitting without making any change, it says
the status is not in sync with the current configuration and when I ask
to see what is to be updated it says that '/etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S85gpm start'
is to be executed.

Is out there someone with a suggestion ?
