Edit /etc/inittab, find the following lines:
4:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty4
5:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty5
6:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty6
Now at the end of this list add:
7:2345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty modem
Then to get linux to reread the file and act on it do:
# /sbin/telinit q
And it may be worth doing a:
# killall -HUP inetd
This allows a user to dial in and use their shell account, ie command
line access to the system. I've done this and dialed in, and can
read my news and do anything else that you can do from a command line.
I've never bothered changing IP addresses or anything like that to
get this type of access to the machine, but you will need to get
the IP stuff right if you want to FTP accross the link.
I've never used X over the dial in link, there is a mini HOWTO
called 'Remote-X-Apps' on my distro in the directory
/usr/doc/HOWTO/mini/
Hope this helps.

Presumably if your server doesn't have an entry in the DNS of the
remote machine you won't be able to access it by name, so I think
you need to make it official, but you should be ok if you don't
mind using just the IP address.

Reading man mount it looks asthough you could make the following

/dev/fd0 /floppy auto noauto,user,rw 0 0

Hello Jason,
the /etc/fstab wont help you very much because we use the automounter
system. There in the /etc/auto.master is an entry, which mounts the
cdrom like the command mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /cdrom would do.
/dev/cdrom is a link of the special device /dev/sr0 hopefully to the
PANASONIC SCSI CDROM drive (sorry that I do not know exactly the CDROM
specification of my friends computer, but I think the most important
fact is that he uses a SCSI controller). According to the error messages
we suggested that our problem is more related to the kernel because it
doesnt recognize the block special device as a block special device and
asked something about an insmod driver.
Ciao Stefan

Absolutely.
Besides, editing /etc/passwd isn't an option for users who don't have
root access privileges. chsh can be executed by any user to change

Hi folks!
I'm using SuSE 6.2 and have any login, su, ... session logged
in /var/log/messages! This looks somewhat like this:
Mar 16 14:03:12 LIHB-201 in.rshd[9407]: pam_unix session started for user
maddel, service rsh
I can only avoid this by placing
user.emerg /var/log/messages
in /etc/syslog.conf, but this filters messages I want to be logged
in that file (i.e. logger "test" is not logged any more!!!) I want the user
facility logged
with info priority, so is there any way to prevent PAM from writing messages
to syslog??
Thanks for any help in advance...

the mechanical write-protection-slider on the front of the
tapes is a very clever construct. even when you set it on
writeable it may slide to lock when you dont insert the
media very careful !!
it appears that there is also some state in between, cause
the friday- and saturday- and sundaybackup are written on
the same tape, cause there is noone to change it on the
weekend and last week the fridaybackup was ok and the

Is there anything that works as a Unix emulator on WinNT machines?

Frame errors, as far as I know, are errors due to the packets sent not
being the same as the packets sent. In other (clearer, I hope) words,
the packets sent to you are being corrupted somehow and it doesn't
surprise me since the conduit is a 'phone line.

Hello Linux friends,
I am facing a situation that I have never seen before. My computer date is
correct, but the date shown with the "ps auxw" command are totally bogus.
A collegue told me that he has seen this happen with new Intel processors
and recent linux kernel versions.
Here's an example:
[root@foohp mail]# date
Thu Mar 16 09:30:29 GMT+3 2000
[root@foohp mail]# date -u
Thu Mar 16 12:30:30 UTC 2000
[root@foohp mail]# ps auxw | tail -2
root 28290 0.0 0.1 2648 1020 ttyp0 R 05:56 0:00 ps auxw
root 28291 0.0 0.0 1084 348 ttyp0 S 05:56 0:00 tail -2
See... the localtime is 09:30 (we are -0300 GMT), but the ps command shows
the processes to be running at "05:56"... This 05:56 is very close to the
time the machine was last booted.
This is a Pentium III 650, with 1GB RAM. We're using Kernel 2.2.14 with Red
Hat 6.0.
Thanks a lot and regards from Brazil,

Dear sir:
I have 2 pc. pc1 has a network card , can access to internet,
another hasn't. I try to connect pc 2 to pc 1 with direct serial line.
using PPP.
I am using Redhat 6.0. After I reading PPP howto, serial howto, I still
can not fix it.
I have added getty in /etc/inittab, 2 PC can communicate through
minicom.
I add /etc/gettydefs with Dump terminal entry.
I also add setserial in /etc/rc.d/rc.local.
I am using ttyS0.
The PPP howto says, only I need to do is to run PPPD at both end as
such:
pc1 :
pppd -detach lock proxyarp 192.168.0.1:192.168.0.2 /dev/ttyS0 38400 &
pc2:
pppd -detach lock defaultroute 192.168.0.2:192.168.0.1 /dev/ttyS0 38400
&
Since I am a newbie. I did not do other things.
However, I can't found any sigh of PPP working.
Using ifconfig I found nothing on PC2 except L0
on PC1 there is only L0 and ethernet card interface.
I can't ping each other too.
Can any one give me a guidance. I am totally in a mess!
Thanks!
(By the way, I have spare NIC , but I want to try PPP in this
environment..)

Actually, the one I use most often is swat, which not only comes with
the distro, but can also be run from any workstation using a web browser
(don't worry, it uses username/password for authentication and can be
configured to use TCP wrappers). Just do a man swat to get more info.

I answered exactly this question some days ago. Pres <tab> twice to see
all valid commands. Use the "man" command to get info about a particular
command (e.g. "man ls" or "man man").
You may also want to take a look at the Linux Documentation Project
