I have a problem I have failed to solve yet.

Given a NFS server running SUSE 6.0 and a xterm running

  'tail -f -n20 /var/log/messages'

I can see the mount attempt and the mount happening in the same second I
am initiating the mount attempt on the workstation.

But on the workstation, also running SUSE 6.0, it takes about 12 sec. before
it returns to the prompt. There are no additonal messages, just a 'hang'.

After the mount everything runs fine.

Running kernel 2.2.9 on both.
Installed everyting according to linux/Changes.

Any ideas?

Is it possible to do, in my instance, a Debian or FreeBSD install of Linux
through a Wingate 3.0 server being run on a Windows 98 machine?

I know it's possible to access the net if linux is already installed, but I
want to install linux.
Any ideas?

Thanks

DNS is disabled on this box. I've even gone as far as to remove the resolv.conf
file. Besides, tcpdump shows that the box is able to send acks to whatever
remote machine is involved. Also remember that all established connections can
reach any host via telnet, ftp, rlogin, etc... (as long as they're in the hosts
table of course). As for the network card, this problem has been replicated on
three other identical systems to rule out just that. Network traffic is
non-existent on this box. I've even prevented misc. services such as sendmail
from starting to make sure to no avail. Thanks for your responses though.

Subject: ppp help needed
Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 22:21:31 +0200
Reply-To: "Jacek M. Holeczek" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi,
I just started my first ppp client ( a small RH5.2/i386 box + a modem ).
On principle it works, but I have met some problems :
1. I start it on demand using "/usr/sbin/usernetctl ppp0 up", then it
connects to the provider and gets a new "ip" address and "hostname"
   ( before the connection is established, it's "localhost.localdomain" ).
I stop it using "/usr/sbin/usernetctl ppp0 down", then it disconnects,
the "ip" address is gone, but the "hostname" is not restored to the
original "localhost.localdomain", it is left as it was during the last
   "connection".
2. If I try "/usr/sbin/usernetctl ppp0 report" there is never any output
   available ( just a "newline" ).
3. I "login" to my small machine using the xdm ( runlevel 5 ). Then I
start some local clients, ... , then, from time to time, I start / stop
the ppp connection. The problem is - as soon as I start the connection
the "ip" number and the "hostname" are changed, and ... the result is I
cannot start X applications any more - the server, which uses the
   xauthority, refuses connections ( I can't even say "xhost +" ). The
".Xauthority" file contains an entry for "localhost.localdomain" and
   NOT for the new "hostname".
4. I usually use "xosview". It can also display "net" usage. For this
   purpose my /etc/rc.d/rc.local contains ( kernel 2.0.36 ) :
        # Enable IP accounting for all IP packets into and out of machine.
        # This is needed only if one is running an older 2.1 or 2.0 kernel.
        /sbin/ipfwadm -A -a -P all -S $(uname -n) -D 0/0
        /sbin/ipfwadm -A -a -P all -S 0/0 -D $(uname -n)
The problem is that the "uname -n" is "localhost.localdomain" at boot
time, and as a result the new ppp "hostname" is not taken into account
( I mean the "net" display shows nothing ). If I execute these two
lines again after the ppp connection is established, the "net" display
works, but if I stop / start the ppp again it's gone again ( and, if I
remember well, executing these two lines again does not help ).
   I tried :
        /sbin/ipfwadm -A -a -P all -S 0/0 -D 0/0
   but it doesn't work either.
5. I managed also the "xosview" to display the ttyS3 ( the /dev/modem is a
symbolic link to cua3 ),and it really displays 16 bits of something,
but I have the feeling that it has nothing to do with the modem uart
( the modem is an internal Rockwell based one ). There is never any bit
changed, and each time I reset the machine another bits are "on" ( the
   "xosview" version is 1.6.1 ).
Could you please help me to solve these problems ( especially 3 and 4 ).
Thanks in advance,
Jacek.

I missed the original post, but you might like to check out Xswallow at

http://www.csn.ul.ie/~caolan/docs/xswallow.html and
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/apps/www/plugins

which is something i wrote to do pretty much what you appear to have done,
with the addition that it can also relocate x apps into the space provided
in the webpage for the plugin by netscape, so you get any graphical content
in the location intended by the webpage writer, though xswallow also can
handle embedded wav/au/midi through helperapps.

I use it for vrml. movie types, sound and pdf. Its pretty ok, its a bit
hacky to get the X app to move into the new location, and for apps like
realvideo which insist on retaining their control bars and whatnot they
dont fit correctly into the embed window space correctly, so you often
have to leave them outside netscape and not swallow them. I don't know
if im making myself clear, but if you download and check it out you'll
see what i mean.

Actually, from what I understand, a primary reason many virii authors
have to write viruses is because they want to hit as many systems as
possible. Since Linux hasn't reached as widespread a distribution as
Windows, Windows is a better target.

I did note that Network Associates has a virus scanner for Linux.
Haven't looked at it, though.

Hi!
I have RH 6.0, K6, 64MB RAM + 120MB swap space. What bothers me is that
Linux doesn't notify me when there's not enough swap memory left.

For example: I ussualy dial-up and open about 20 Netscape frames with
various news previews, reviews, etc and then disconnect. There are a lot of
pictures, graphs and similar stuff inside and soon Netscape eats all main
memory. Things start to get very slow when Linux has to use swap partition.
But I can take this. The problem occurs when free swap memory drops to
zero. It happens very often to me. Then Linux runs so slow that I can
hardly move a mouse pointer and all I can hear is my hard drive swaping
continuously and without control I can only press the magic
CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE to exit X11.

Does anybody know how to set up some kind of warning or how to improve
swapping? I don't like to say this but I think Windows use less swap and
more efficiently.
Thamks for any info!

File name completion in ksh depends on the edit mode. Have you
set -o emacs? (file completion is M-<ESC> in emacs mode.)
(file completion is <ESC>\ in vi mode.)

Hmmm. I used Backmaster with my Jumbo 250 (and later with Jumbo 350;=20
both floppy-based tape drives) for several years without problems in=20
OS/2. The one caveat is that it did like having a dedicated tape=20

tape drive) to work properly.

True enough, I got an Exabyte drive for US$90 last year that's been=20
serving me well since I retired the Jumbo. If you want=20
high-performance SCSI (eg, you want to run HD's or CD-R on the SCSI=20
bus) you should expect to pay a couple hundred bucks for a decent=20
host-bus adapter. If all you want is the tape drive and maybe a=20
simple CDROM and/or scanner on the SCSI bus you could get away with=20
something considerably cheaper.

I followed the Sound-HOWTO to test it, but they say to first select the

What can I do ? the only thing I can record is static noise :-(
