Hi All,

I was just going over the "Linux Dialin Server Setup Guide"
at http://www.swcp.com/~jgentry/pers.html
and was wondering if there are any software programs out
there one could use to make the setup easier.

Thanks

I have read all the HOWTO's, recompiled the kernel, and other procedural
things & it still won't work with linux apps. cdplayer works ok.

sndconfig gives all the right answers - can even hear Linux's speech.

dmesg shows that the card is recognized. cat /dev/sndstat has blanks in
the "installed drivers" and "Card config" lines, but all subsequent lines
have the expected info.

The isapnp.conf file has all the same resources as DOS/Win95.

What could the problem be?

Thanks GK

I am running RH6.0 with kernel 2.2.5-15. If I upgraded to 2.2.5-22 will
there be support for this card? If not how would I go about getting a
driver for this without have to compile anything?

Thanks,

Yes I start a process as a normal user using su. I am not at home right
now but it might be some thing like this:

su username -c /path/to/script/scriptfile

Just put this in /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Or some thing very close to this, you can of course redirect the output to
/dev/null if you like. I use this method to start a random sig generator
for when I use mutt on my Linux box (which I am not at right now).

I know all about that - the thing is, Seti@Home doesn't appear to create
a PID - which the botchk script uses.

I may not be able to write shell code - but I do (mostly) understand it :>

What I'm looking for is a way (with cron?) to start a task (as myself;
not root) which will run only once - during system bootup.

I want the command;

./setiathome > /dev/null &

to be run (so that I don't have any screen output, and it can be ignored).

It just seems to me that cron will only run at specified intervals, so I'm
not sure if that's what I'm looking for or not.

Someone else suggested rc.local - ok, but how do I control which user runs
it? This is a binary I don't have source for - so I'd rather not run it as
root :>

Hmm... when I do that in RH 5.2, it says it's detected a
Vibra/16 (another name for SB16 PnP), and asks me know
questions about IRQ, DMA, etc. It says it's going to
write a new isapnp.conf file. It also asks me if I can
here Linus' voice (which I can).

Now, when I reboot, it says that it can't use the second dma
channel. So all I get is SB8 sound (which handles Linus'
voice just fine). But when I "cat /proc/dma", only
SB 8 is listed, not SB 16. (Should be on dma 3).

Are you sure you have 16-bit sound?

My god, you ARE new to Linux! Never mind, you'll find out pretty soon
this is a question that, when asked, invariably starts a Distributions
War(TM)...which you get somewhat tired of, after a while. The short
answer is: it's all Linux, the similarities are much more important than
the differences. The medium answer would be: get a few, try'em all, see
which you like best. In many cases, "the best distribution" is a matter
of personal taste. The long answer...oh, I won't even get into that;
there are specifics for each distribution, e.g:
RedHat is very popular among new converts, usually migrating from
Windows, but not only - I know quite a few old-timers that swear by it;
Debian is for who wants Truly Free Software, no commercial stuff there;
nicely packaged, too (as well as RedHat);
Slackware is more for the DIY-tinkerer type (e.g. me
:))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
and so on...

I have the same problem as Curt. I've put all the appropriate entries in the
hosts.* files, and I still can't mount.

I suspect my problem is in the knfsd which came with the RH 6.0 disk. I went
to the site: http://csua.berkeley.edu/~gam3/knfsd and downloaded the archive
knfsd-1.4.4.tar.gz (dated July 6!).

My question now is - how do I make and install? Is this something normally
found in the kernel directory, or an independent set of utilities? I've run
"configure" to create the makefile, and I'm now doing a "make all". I'm a
little afraid of "oopses" as Olaf calls them. Do I just run the "copy" script
now??? Does anyone else have experience with these modules?

(Rebuilding a kernel is no big deal, but fiddling with individual components
makes me a little nervous...)

My printer is a HP 672C which is fully supported, not that this should matter.
I'm running Red Hat 6.0, and I already read the HOWTOs. They didn't help.

The first problem is that I would like to print a text file using a different
font and size. The best I can come up with is to use "mpage -1" to generate
Postscript, and then print it (the Red Hat print filters will automatically
run it through Ghostscript to print it). This lets me change the font, but
still doesn't let me change the font size. How do I print something in a
different size?

The second problem is: How do I convert a Truetype font to be usable by
Ghostscript?

That's not practical if you're hosting folks who are building Web sites
via Telnet and FTP.

Many Linux releases shipped until recently with wu-ftpd-2.4.2.
This is the last release from Washington University, and it has a
big fat root shell hole.
Replace it with wu-ftpd-2.5.0 (from ftp://ftp.wu-ftpd.org/wu-ftpd/)
and close the hole.
Apparently Washington University stopped maintaining wu-ftpd and
didn't even tell their mirror sites. There are lots of mirrors
around the net still handing out the buggy version.

What's the point of being on the Internet if you're not going to talk

kernel up to date.

Subject: A somewhat interesting problem
Date: Sat, 10 Jul 1999 22:02:15 -0500

I'm relatively new to Linux, but I've had passing experience in UNIX for
about two years now. I had first configured a Linux installation in January,
Redhat 5.2 which I soon upgraded to 6.0. All in all, I'm doing fine with it.
Aside from GNOME going south with regularity taking E with it leaving core
files strewn about like so much shrapnel.
I'm off subject, anyway. I had set cron to do a job for me on a weekly
basis, or so I thought. Updatedb, since I use the locate command very
frequently. I noticed a slowdown just this week. I ran ps to see if any
errant processes could be found, nothing. My commands at the prompt had
slowed to a crawl with constant drive activity. I decided to try ps -A, and
to my dismay, updatedb and cron were running in at least 80 instances of
each. Eureka, the problem has been found.
Which brings me to my issue, where is the offending cron entry? And
where should this updatedb cron entry be so that it runs in the manner
expected. Also, I was thinking, killing process after process was getting
repetitive, so I decided I'd write a script. Even though I'd rather fix this
from it's root, no pun intended. Any help on this cron matter would be
greatly appreciated, feel free to post here, or mail me.

I also have been getting this garbage on the server, this will happen
when
there are no other computers on line, just the server. Could I be
getting
routes from the NIC? I wish I knew how to read the tcpdump better.
Thanks
for any help.

Can you post the output ( or error message ) produced by /bin/df ?

The contents of /proc/mdstat , /etc/fstab and /etc/raidtab would
be helpfull as well.
