I'm curious, what does this figure count? Kernel-only developers,
or does it include anyone who's worked on the GPL'ed apps that come
with Linux? (100,000 seems a big high for just the kernel hackers,
but a bit low for all people who've ever been on a GPL project.)

This is way off topic but hey.
Interesting to hear the proposal foobar is derived from
furchtbar. It's not impossible.
The way I learned it, it's "fubar." It's another warped
acronym like "snafu," which is "Situation Normal,
All F*cked Up." There are more of course.
Fubar is "F*cked Up Beyond All Repair."
I think they were words coined by American servicemen
in WW II but that could be wrong. I learned them
in college from people whose fathers had been WWII
GIs.

There are two hosts, host A is a Linux as a ipchains firewall host B is a NT,
which uses Netscape Proxy server for web caching and content filtering
now i would like to apply transparent proxy so that users don't need to
set the proxy server in their browsers
but i find that ipchains can't "redirect" port 80 request to remote host...
> ipchains -A input -p tcp -d 0.0.0.0/0 80 -j REDIRECT 8080
the command above can't "redirect" request to the proxy server on host B
Any suggestions? Provided that I can't use squid on the
firewall.....(customer's request)

I have one of those cool Logitech mice (not the mouseman, it is not
modled, it must be older, just says Logitech) that has the wheel as the
middle third button. That wonderfull button wants to scroll windows for
me but something is wrong (incomplete) with the mouse driver and I only
get the click function. I know the hardware is fine because it scrolls
fine under win98 (now win NT however). I am running Redhat Linux 6.2
and I didn't do any further configurations after the install
autodetected the mouse. Is it possible to activate the scrolling
function for this mouse? If so any suggestions?

Hello,
Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.
I downloaded the tarball gnucash-1.4.1.tar.gz while logged in as root.
Then I untarred it. This resulted in every file being restored with the
owner set to 'Bob' rather than root which thoroughly confuses me. Why
didn't tar set the ownership and group to root when I untarred? Don't I
need to be root in order to compile and install the application? Don't
these files need to be owned by root?
I did print the README which lists several dependencies as you said.
That yields my final question -- I need a few Perl modules. I have Perl
5.005 installed, but how do I check for a module like
perl-HTML/HTML-Parser-2.20?
Thanks,

You can export data from Excel using 'Save As' and select a file format
such as "Formatted Text" or "Text". This did a semi-reasonable job on my
buget which I tested with. There may be utilities to extract infomation
from Excel files for Linux out there; see freshmeat.net.
As for doing a departmental directory on Linux, you could use Gnumeric,
which is a reasonaly Excel compliant spreadsheet app that is part of the
Gnome project, www.gnome.org. In fact, Gnumeric might be able to open your
directory and export it. I guess it depends on how complex the file is. If
you wanted to go for a real enterprise level solution, you could serve the
departmental directory from an Apache web server, using PHP4 or something
to generate pages from a Postgres database. You could also get away with
MySQL as a database, since they have recently done away with the
restricitve licence (I belive). I don't know if a library is big enough to
warrent such an undertaking for the departmental directory, but it sure
would be scalable if you needed to add a whole bunch of departments or
something (provided it was designed and implemented correctly).

I had a similar prob. Ran every diag prog avail. Ran mem tests for days. No
problems found. Replaced everything, only aft memory was replaced was all well
again. Frys tested it and said its fine. I said it has a lifetime warranty
and I want a new one, now. After some bickering they gave it to me. Moral, you
can test your memory and have the tests say it's fine when it is not.

Can anyone give me a pointer toward info about Linux support for
writing to Compact Flash memory modules, particularly as used in
RCA Lyra player. The player comes with Windows software and a
cable set that connects to the parallel port for transferring
data to the memory modules.
Since I thought I'd finally gotten rid of Windows, it bugs me to have
to resurrect the beast to load up an mp3 player.

You should generally be able to fix these with:
$ fdisk -y
...though this assumes you want to accept all of fdisk's suggested
changes. You can test first with "fdisk -ny" which says "don't change
anything but tell me everything you want to do". As has been mentioned
elsewhere, your alternatives to accepting the changes are slim.
It might be a good idea to check the "lost+found" directory of the
drive, and to make a backup of the system in the event it's starting to
go squirrly on you.

$ tar xvf /dev/nst0
...though I'd recommend running:
$ tar tvf /dev/nst0
...first to verify the contents. Probably piping through less or more.
Incidentally, compressing data to tape is generally depricated. Most
decent drives support hardware compression. tar is a damage-prone data
format, and you may find yourself with a tougher job of data recovery
in the case of a tar'ed & gz'ed file than just a tar'ed one.
cpio and afio are more robust alternatives to tar.
