Under Red Hat 6.1, this worked for me:
(as root:) ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/pilot
chmod a+rwx /dev/ttyS0
I then use GNOME and sync at 57600 to /dev/pilot. There were a few
bumps, but it generally works.
YMMV, etc.

well, the ones you mention here (excepting GNOME) are what we know as window
managers, and are the responsibles of the look and feel of your desktop (icons
title bars, etc.) regarding windows operations, and GNOME is a desktop environent.
it takes charge of operations sucha as drag and drop betwen optimized applications,
file associations, common object models, etc.

yes, basically, and regarding the differences betwen window managers and desktop
environmets, GNOME can use different window managers (sawfish, wm, enlightenment)

Edit /etc/rc.d/rc.local
and comment out these lines.
# This will overwrite /etc/issue at every boot. So, make any changes
you
# want to make to /etc/issue here or you will lose them when you reboot.
# echo "" > /etc/issue
# echo "$R" >> /etc/issue
# echo "Kernel $(uname -r) on $a $SMP$(uname -m)" >> /etc/issue
#
# cp -f /etc/issue /etc/issue.net
# echo >> /etc/issue
Then you can edit the /etc/issue and issue.net files with what ever you
want to put in them.

i have been searching the net all morning to try and find a way to make
sure that my network cards are being loaded 100mb full duplex at boot
time. We have a server thats being used for a log server for our pix and
routers and it is running EXTREMELEY slow. We can barely ssh in. The
ports are set at 100mb Full. So i need to find a way to make sure that
my network card is running at that same speed. Please if anyone could
help it would be greatly appreciated.

hello again,
as root i run Xconfigurator to adjust my monitor and graphics card settings.
in the pci probe test this is what i get:
PCI entry S3 Inc | Savage 4
X Server XF86_SVGA
XFree4 driver No match
i proceed with setup, selected Generic monitor non-interlaced SVGA 1024 X
768 (my real monitor is Acer 77e).
i selected no clockchip setting.
in select video mode i selected 8 bit 800 x 600 and 16 bit 800 x 600.
then Xserver probed the settings, ok (i was taken back to the prompt).
hit Ctrl + Alt + F7 to return to X-window.... nope, no effect. i still have
display corruption.
restarted linux but still i get the same.
now what do i do?
sorry for this dumb question but what is "CD to your installation CD and use
rpm -Fvh

ELF is the binary format (try the command "file /bin/ls"
and see what it says) used on most linux systems these
days.
It means that an attempt to use the libphp4.so file is
detecting that the file is not a valid ELF shared object
(hence ".so").
The installation either went wrong or you installed
something for the wrong processor/binary type.
What does "file /etc/httpd/lib/libphp4.so" say?

It doesn't mean anything, other than "this setup works for me on my
particular configuration, and it might work for you on yours, and it
might not, and if it doesn't, something similar might, or might not."
:) <--- smiley
I'd say you should be able to get it working with a little sweat, but be
sure you can return that cradle, because there's no way to be sure other
than to try it and be ready to wrestle with it a bit.

Subject: kerneld confusions
From: John Hunter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: 31 May 2001 11:59:26 -0500
I am trying to get a USB printer working on my RHL6.2 system with the
2.4.2 kernel.
Apparently I am having some trouble with modules. I can compile and
install the kernel w/o problems (after configuring with modular usb
support) with
> make dep clean bzImage
When I compile and install the modules with 'make modules_install',
following the command:
find kernel -path '*/pcmcia/*' -name '*.o' | xargs -i -r ln -sf ../{} pcmcia
if [ -r System.map ]; then /sbin/depmod -ae -F System.map 2.4.2; fi
l
I get loads of errors like 'depmod: not an ELF file'. Any idea what
is wrong here?
Reading the Documentation/modules.txt file that came with the 2.4.2
source, I see a reference to /sbin/kerneld and the need to choose
CONFIG_KERNELD. However, there is no CONFIG_KERNELD option in my
/usr/src/linux/.config file, and the program /sbin/kerneld does not
exist on my system.
I administer several RHL boxes ranging from 6.1 to 7.0, and notice
that some of them have the kerneld program and some do not. Is there
some package I need to install to get kerneld. Is this likely to be
the source of my module problems?
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks,
John Hunter
