Well, with RedHat, I had a long, painless transition period with
regard to those particular kinds of problem.

Well, I suppose none of the SCO front-ends have been very intuitive as
regards the keyboard keys they use to move between fields and bring up
menus - that's the bit I hate. The software is very good at loading /
managing software packages and installing / configuring new hardware.
Also, there are lots of good up to date SCO drivers out there -
whereas quite a few hardware suppliers I have tried are still not
fully supporting Linux.

Mmm - I have never really got into interfacing heavily with the OS.

Thanks - I'll include myself in that category ;-)

Yuk! Never had anything like that. We support about 30-40 SCO boxes
(both 3.2 & OS5) over modem links and have never had anything remotely
nasty happen with them (touch wood!). Any problems we have had have
been hardware failure related. The only current outstanding problem we
have is with a site where the server hangs about once every six
months. It has been suggested this is a fault on the SCSI line but I
just haven't had the chance to test this.
I'll stick with the Linux and keep plugging away at it. No doubt my
confidence and familiarity will grow over time :-)
Best wishes

I have been that route. I have "EVERY" linux book published for RedHat 5.2
onward and have the pages worn out from reading and thumbing though them.
Also, I found it to be the opposite for getting a solution to a problem. My
last problem was getting "kpackage" installed. I finally got it to work when
a newsgroup reader suggested that I subsribe to "linux.redhat.rpm" where the
latest rpm was posted that was a cure to my problem. Guess what? It worked.
After two days of dicking around reading books, man pages, and how to's, the
newsgroups won out.
>Linux may not be "user friendly" like Windoze, but atleast the OS doesn't

No, I don't want the computer to hold my hand, but, I want it to "Do what I
want it to do" after a "reasonable" amount of debugging. Since I have a
"life" and am not getting $50-$75 an hour to configure a linux box, I choose
to take the path of least resistance and ask for help when the documentation
fails me. As for patience and intelligence, I feel that I have a small
amount of each.
I don't want to start a Linux vs Windows thread, but, you have to admit that
Windows works... Now I like linux and am not going to dump it. I just am
frustrated with some of the petty install problems it has. And I have
learned a wealth of information correcting these problems, though time
consuming. My prefference would be to learn how to use linux and all it's
features instead of correcting problems that shouldn't be there in the first
place.
I want to thank all the wonderful people in the newsgroups that have helped
me out. There is no book or written documentation that can replace the
wealth of information that is given here. I can't thank you enough for
saving me countless hours to do something else like being with my family.

Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1999 11:39:18 +0200
Has anyone managed to compile bttvgrab lately? I'm in the mood for a
clue.
after some missing files from older glibc versions I finally got it
ALMOST to compile...till it screwed up on what seems like an internal
path error?
what happens with putvlc.o here...is it that it never makes it to /tmn
(cause it sure doesn't) or is it because it was supposed to be found
there? (there IS such a file in /libgrab after make fails, size 29688)
ar: tmn/putvlc.o: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [libgrab.a] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/stuff/bttvgrab-0.15.4/libgrab'
make: *** [libgrab.a] Error 2
There's a hanbful other not so good looking errors before this too, but
nothing too fatal.

I Guess the AMIGA press release is the most authoritative on the plans
of AMIGA ;)
Apparently Amiga switched from QNX to LINUX at the recommendation of The
Linus Tordsvald (hopefully I spelt his surname correctly).
QNX are going to release their version of the new Amiga OS anyway

Ok I had similar problems, I've compiled the iBCS from the redhat kernel
source witch at least ran.
But i've had al kinds of problems afterwards i.e. kernel panic's,
unexplained stops et al. no problems after dumping iBCS (and replacing the

Subject: Waitaminnit -- it's not supposed to do that!
Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1999 11:34:07 GMT
The Linux side of this 486DX4-100 had me mumbling the subject of this post
yesterday afternoon, and I was wondering if any of the Linux gurus in the
group could shed some light on a possible explaination.
The distro is SlackWare 3.6 with the kernel patched to 2.0.36. Linux owns hda
which is a 6.4GB Western Digital Caviar. 512 kB Oak OTI-067 video card, SIIG
ISA multi-I/O card, 64 MB of RAM and 128 kB of cache.
Okay; I was reading some HOWTOs trying to get smarter on the system, and tried
to switch to a different virtual terminal to look at something else. It
looked like there weren't any available -- which I knew to be wrong. I
figured I might like to look at inittab, so once I left less I typed "less
/etc/inittab", but what the kernel saw was "LESS ?ETC?INITTAB" and of course
it protested that there was no "LESS" command. Okay -- shift lock and retype,
right? What I got out of it this time was, "less ?etc?inittab" and of course
it squalled again. Retype with the appropriate use of the shift key -- same
result.
It finally sinks in that this box is ailing, so I figure it's time to shut
down and take a looksee. That's "shutdown -h now", right? What came out was
"shutdown _h now" and that wouldn't do at all. After the application of some
suitable incantations indicative of an increasing frustration level, I told
the computer to "halt" and it did.
So that's one problem. Like the old TV commercials used to say, "But wait --
there's *more*!"
I dug out the boot and root disks for the distribution and brought the system
up in a mode where I could work with it. I mounted /dev/hda1 to /mnt and
looked for some things; i.e., new commands in /bin, /usr/bin, /sbin and
/usr/sbin and new configuration files in /etc/*. Nada, yok, opseyo or however
you want to say, "It ain't there". I did notice a peculiarity that commanded
considerable attention, though; several files bore a timestamp of July 11,
1999 -- and others bore a timestamp of July 11 hh:mm like they should. The
ones with the correct time stamp were the ones that had been created or
modified in the morning, while those with the 1999 stamp were the ones I had
been working with when the computer developed the pip.
I figured I should go back to the installed system and look at it, so I shut
down the root disk (with "shutdown -h now") and brought the computer up on
/dev/hda. It's working disgustingly normal now; shift keys shift correctly
and timestamps are stamped with the correct time
So -- any ideas what this computer was up to when it startled me yesterday?
Any SWAGs? Any WAGs?

I just bulit a new kernal (Redhat 6). It compiled fine without errors. My
process was (instructions from a book) as follows:
make mrproper
make xconfig (chose relevent settings)
make dep
make clean
make bzImage (too big for zImage)
make modules
make modules_install
copied bzImage to /boot
added a new lilo entry
typed lilo
rebooted
here is the problem: at startup the system hangs on the line
finding module dependencies
Have I missed a step or forgotten to compile something in? I enabled the
autoloading options for modules...
Any ideas?

I've untarred the postgresql .tar.gz file, but I can't configure it.
WHen I run the ./configure, it tells me:
"Error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot
create executables."
What does this mean?
I tried selecting the template by doing: ./config --with-template=(a few
different templates). It didn't accept any of them, and told me the
same thing.
I ran the ./config.guess, and it told me:
