Would patch's "--force" option do what you want. After you're done
look for *.rej files to see if anything important failed. If things
go totally wrong just reinstall the source, no disaster. If the
compile succeeds make a conventional boot diskette and try it. That
way you will still be able to boot your system just like before the
experiment.

I can't get Netscape6 to install. Downloaded the install but when I
try to unzip it I get an error from tar. I've cut and pasted the gzip
-dc | tar -xvf line from the readme file but it doesn't work.

Anyone else tried this?

Have you considered using VMware:
  http://www.vmware.com
or Win4Lin
  http://www.netraverse.com
both are commercial products; but reasonably priced.

Still I suspect this to be the problem. I've seen these same messages
far to often on my DELL machine. They tend to occur here when I put an
extra drive on the IDE controller but haven't jumpered it correctly. On
a known good system this will make it unbootable (ofcourse :-) ). It has
nothing to do with lilo, which is probably perfectly written in the MBR,
and everything with your hardware configuration. The BIOS cannot find
the HDD/RAID array for some reason. Which reason it is, I cannot tell
you, I don't have any expierience with RAID arrays, but i suggest you
either check jumpers/connections or fix the BIOS settings if they are
wrong for whatever reason.

Thanks for all the replies. I went with what many of you said and did an
amazingly painless compile from the 21.1.12 source. Unfortunately, not all
things work (most notably, I couldn't get cc-mode to work properly yet) but
I have the most basic functionality. I have a somewhat stupid question -
what is the difference between installing a lisp package in the default
place (/usr/local/lib/xemacs*/xemacs-packages) versus installing it anywhere
and using (setq load-path (cons "/dir/of/cc-mode/" load-path)) in the .emacs
file. For eg, can I install the lisp package in /mydir/cc-mode* and use the
above in .emacs ?

Have you loaded all the correct modules into XFree86? Because 4.0.x supports
plugin modules, you may merely be not loading the "extmod" module in your
XF86Config-4 file in /etc/X11.

Find the 'Section "Modules"' and add

        Load "extmod"

to it.

you want to download the whole thing.

I would check jumpers, except it worked out of the box. It was only after
reinstall that it failed. Very few settings in BIOS to change.

Hi all,

I'm comtemplating upgrading the glibc version on my Corel (Debian) linux
because of the
many packages which are giving me errors regarding the glibc version
being too old (2.0.7 or
something).

I download the source and thought of doing a compile (persumably the
safest way). Reading
the README file, though has scared me straight as it warns about how
dangerous it is to try
to upgrade glibc libraries. Has anyone of you safely and without much
hassle done such a
thing and if so, (a) could you share you experience (b) recall any
things to be careful about ?

Thanks in advance for the feedback,

thanks - however, before i posted my original msg i had a search using

got the tarball src for version 0.5.0 but i've seen rpms claiming
version 5.0.2... not being a great fan of rpms (not a flame bait) didnt
want to grab them; the url for the homepage given in the tarball said

    hotaru.clinuxworld.com/gtksee

but netscape etc doesnt seem to think that the host exists (well,
www.clinuxworld exists but not the one above)

does anyone know if that homepage has moved elsewhere or where the
official home for gtk is?

thanks again

First, you need to have all the MySQL stuff installed. There are 4 RPMs
(I think) for MySQL; MySQL, MySQL-client, MySQL-devel, and MySQL-shared.
Make sure they've all been installed. Then you need to make sure that
your PHP has been compiled with support for MySQL. This is usually done
by going to the PHP source directory and adding --with-mysql to the
options you pass to "configure". Then make, make install, and restart
your webserver. There's a guide to doing all these things at
  http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/99/21/index2a.html
so check there if you have problems. HTH!

DOS is an operating system. It provides file and memory services, and in general
acts as an interface between the system and applications. That's what an OS
does. The analogy between LILO and DOS doesn't really hold water.

No it doesn't. Just about every DOS application ever written has to talk
directly to the hardware to get anything done.

My comparison to DOS and LILO holds perfectly well. Once windoze/9x loads, dos
is out of the picture. Windoze 9x doesn't even use dos hardly anything.

You might as well call the BIOS an OS if you really DOS can be considered an OS.
DOS has a file system and can load programs but that's about it.

But the * has NEVER changed. The shell expands the *, not rm, so it will
only remove files with the suffix .obj in the CURRENT directory.

I don't speak for LBL; they don't pay me enough for that.

Yes.

No. The kernel knows the addresses. ;-) That file is needed for
some programs which need info about kernel entry points, and also,
if you have an Oops (kernel bug), then you can easily figure out
which function caused it.

It doesn't use it as I know.

You can have multiple kernels of the same version.

no, bootdisk does never contain gcc, glibc, and so on. I think you should
just install a basic system from a normal distro, without X and all things
you're sure you won't need. About 80 mb needed for that?
