There are two drives in the computer. The first, /dev/hda, has NT installed
on it. I am using lilo to dual boot.

Does your modes line say something like: "1280x1024" "1024x768"? Then try
to remove the "1024x768", if you want the 1280.. resolution.

Hi, people. I have a question here, I don't know if this is the more
aproppriate newsgroup, so if anyone knows of a better one, please let me
know.

I have been trying for some time know to setup a b/w quickcam under linux
(rh6), with no success. I tried every program I could find. Many of them I
couldn't even get to compile, unfortunately i'm not very familiar with
compiling tricks yet. However, even with the ones I could get to
sucessfully compile, everything I could "capture" was an almost all black
picture, with only some pixels in different gray shades.

I was already thinking the camera had a problem, but then I tested it on a
win95 system and it worked fine. Can anyone give me some help with it? I'll
be really grateful.

Thanks in advance.

Thats why so many of the clone systems had the tech' first. Many of the
features on the clones are still not out for the Apple systems.

Also why was it that once the clone makers agreed to Apples price jump did
they still yank the plug on clones?

If Be used the information they have to make BeOS run on Apple systems,
Apple could sue them. Be would have to rip apart the hardware or use
published source code. Whats more Apple could (and has many times in the
past) change hardware specs on the motherboards thus "breaking" BeOS.

So it seems quite obvious that the Linux laptop situation is quite
grim. I have yet to find a vendor with a machine that has:

Supported Video chipset
Supported audio chipset
Supported modem

It seems as though most will have 2 out of 3 at best. I'd love to see a
day where www.VENDOR.com would actually contain a page listing chipset
specs.

So my latest question is about the Compaq Presario line. Do they stack
up? How is the AMD K6-III 380 chip vs. the Portable PII-400?

First, thanks to all those who responded to my question about I2O
wrappers in a Linux RTOS environment. We've kind of decided we might
end up writing I2O support for ourselves, so now the question we have
boils down to the following...

As a refresher, I work for a group considering Linux in an embedded
application using a MIPS processor and a Galileo support chip. We are
defining embedded as meaning "diskless, file system-less, and bootable
from prom." Topics under discussion on our end include:

-is Linux available for such an application, that is, are there real
Linux kernels and sources available right now?

-are there development tools available?

-are there companies that might be able to aid us in development of
kernel specific and/or application code?

-for each affirmative answer, where specifically can we go to find what
we need?

So far I've only been able to dig up bits and pieces while we really
need a more comprehensive answer. As things are going I think we can
contribute several things to the Linux community out of the project we
are working on but I've got to convince management that Linux is the way
to go first.

Any help will be very appreciated, and again, thanks to all those who
responded to my first e-mail; the answers provided really helped!

Thanks,

I bought one cause it was dirt cheap!

I'm not sure what your problem is. I just ran sndconfig. It found the card and
set up conf.modules
to load es1371. That's it. Your kernel supports loadable modules, so why not
use 'em.

Unfortunately, it sounds like crap using this driver, so I went to
www.opensound.com and got a
commercial driver demo that sounds a lot better.

...and were better than Apple's offerings. Apple forced the cloners
to use their sucky designs in order to make MacOS run at all.
CHRP was supposed to fix all that, but Apple killed that when
they saw how good the CHRP machines actually were compared to
their own hardware.

Bogus. If Apple had gone ahead with the original plan, the
cloners would have used their own designs instead of Apple's
inferior offerings. Problem solved. Umax, Power and Motorola
had all designed CHRP machines inhouse that used none of
Apple's schematics. They would have buried Apple's hw, that's
how come Apple got scared and pulled the plug.

Sure I can compare it to PCs. You may not have noticed, but
Apple's machines have been coming closer and closer to the
PC world with every new Mac that has been produced. True,
Macs use a superior CPU, but the infrastructure is basically
the same. The PC-architecture has some bits from the eighties,
but they do not matter in the overall scheme of things. The
ugliest thing on PCs today is the CPU. ISA is going away soon,
and with it you've solved the worst of the 80s design.

A couple of millions ? 450 mill to be exact. Much more than
it was worth, but I guess anything to get ol' Stevie boy back.
Indeed, the lawsuit is a bogus excuse. So what ? The end-result
is still the same. And it's primarily Apple's fault.

You don't mention what version you have, but try running XF86Setup. Go

if it fixes your problem. Make sure you have the correct mouse protocol

Have you tried getting the standard input from a file (like "ftp ftp_server
< input.txt")? (Note: I have not tried this.)

There are also programs that ftp on the command line (without user input),
like "ftpget" (which comes with "lftp"), or (if you are a Perl programmer)
you can easily write your own using the Net::FTP Perl module (from CPAN).

Hey.

I have a DRSOUNDPCI32 sound card by Digital Research Technologies.
Here is lspci's output:
00:09.0 Multimedia audio controller: ESS Technology ESS 1969 (rev 01)

When I was installing the card under windows, I used the ESS1938
drivers. However, under linux, there seem to be only older models of the
ESS cards. Could anyone suggest a way for me to be able to use the card
under linux?

When I try to install any module, other than the basic sound module, It
tells me that the init_module failed: Driver or resource busy.

Thanks in advance,

No, I'll never admit that. It sacrifices "user friendliness" for stability.

I deal with it every day in my profession and let me tell you - it does
anything BUT work.

How many Windoze machines do you know of with 365+ day uptimes? Did you know
that it's literally impossible for a Win'95 machine to run longer than 57
days?

You speak of all these problems with Linux, but it sounds to me like you're
still in a DOS mode mindset.

You say you "thumb through" these RedHat books - do you take the time to
read and understand what they're saying? Read things twice. Outloud if
you have to. Hell, talk to another Linux using friend - read it aloud and
ask them if it makes any sense.

Linux works for millions of people worldwide. The only reason it wouldn't
is because PEBKAC.

They could, and reasonably likely would, replace everything from init on
down.

(This is not an unreasonable idea, after all, they previously were
workin with QNX, and thus working with a pretty minimal embedded OS.)

It would be to their benefit to *allow* one to drop Linux libraries and
programs on top, as that would allow those that wish to use Linux
software on this system to do so.

XFree86 may be one of the things they were interested in having access
to; it allows them to provide support for a "bunch" of graphics cards
without having to recode support from scratch.

(Alternatively, if they're planning to sell their own hardware, their
plans might look more like "we'll write a framebuffer manager for this
one chipset," thus mandating a specific set of hardware, as well as that
a rewrite would be needed in a year when a new chipset comes out...)

Sounds to me like your keyboard farted. How new is your keyboard? The last
five years have resulted in keyboards so sensitive you've almost got to not
use them to keep them in working order.

Could be a stuck key (One of your shift keys, perchance?), a Windoze key
conflict, or a corroded contact.

Try pulling your keyboard apart (carefully - 101-key pickup is an awful
game to play! :> ) and having a look-see.

Spill any coffee on or near it lately?

What distro of Linux are you running? If it's Mandrake 6.0,
go to the Mandrake site, updates section, and dl and install the
init scripts and kernel updates.
