I've been using the freewwweb ISP (http://www.teledyn.com/products/FreeWWW/)
off and on for weeks and its been OK I usually connect at 50 and once
connected
its as good as the commercial ISP I ordinarily use. In the Milwaukee area I
get some busy signals but usually connect after four attempts. I plan on
switching full time to freewwweb.

Well, not with the addresses that RR is handing out - they keep
changing on you (in theory anyway).

What may be interesting is to try an alias address for both
devices. Something like this:

    ifconfig eth0:1 192.168.1.1

on one machine, and ...1.2 on the other machine, with appropriate
routes setup

route add -host 192.168.1.2 dev eth0:1

(and vice versa).

If this works, please please post back and let me know - I'm very
curious about this but have no way to test it out myself!

I use xtheater for VCD and mpeg playback. Don't have the URL handy
but you can find it on http://freshmeat.net

The xtheater site also has information and links to other
mpeg playing software.

Hello!

Is there any way to activate a verify when copying files to a
floppy disk using mcopy? Something similar to the MSDOS copy /v?
Recently I had a lot of trouble becaus of a bad sector on a floppy.
Reading back directly after writing seems no good idea - my opinion
is, that a lot of data is taken from the cache.

Any ideas?

Thank you

From: David Steuber <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Sat, 01 Apr 2000 11:59:59 GMT

I've been trying to build some packages on a PPro 200 (Gateway 2000
G6-200) that happens to have a Creative Labs Soundblaster 64 AWE Gold
installed. Due to missing files, I tried to fix some things. Well, I
broke my sound in the process. Under a canned kernel, I was using
oss. Oss wouldn't recompile or work for the 2.2.14 kernel. When I
switched back to the 2.2.10 kernel, it would work for that anymore.

When I try to put sound in the kernel, I can get some noise out of the
speakers, but nothing useful.

Here's what I got:

GCC 2.95.2 (from gcc.gun.org)
Kernel 2.2.14 (from ftp.kernel.org)
oss (from the SuSE 6.2 distro)

The sound card is the SB AWE 64 Gold, a PnP ISA bus card.

I need this working. I know it can be made to work. I can't really
afford to buy the professional OSS.

Please help.

Thanks.

Subject: Apache and PHP3

Hello

I'm having problems with Apache 1.3.12 and php3 compiled as a
DSO. Basically, the php3 installation modifies the httpd.conf file... when
the server is restarted, it refuses to do so. Running testconf gives the
following errors:

httpd: can't resolve symbol 'open64'
httpd: can't resolve symbol '__lxstat64'
httpd: can't resolve symbol 'fopen64'
Syntax error on line 207 of /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf: cannot load
/usr/local/apache/libexec/libphp3.so into server: Unable to resolve
symbol

My guess is that this is due to a missing library... although this is a
fairly new Slackware installation. I've seen this in other applications
recently as well.

Any ideas?

Patrick

Probably. As it happens, I have S7 next to me, so let's take a glance

I must say, I like Patrick's style with the config files :-). Cute.
He chooses kdm, gdm and xdm, in order of preference. Simply
uninstalling kdm (removepkg kdm) will make gdm your login manager.

Find the config file in that users home directory and delete it, then
try running it and I'd suggest it'll see that there's no config file

: outside of X. I tried my rescue disk but it didn't work.

It works fine. Boot and change the default runlevel in /etc/inittab.
It'll be obvious what line you have to change.

You might want to check the date on the advertisement.

For those of you not in the United States we have a tradition
(called April Fools) where we try to fool people on April 1...

Change the following line in /etc/inittab:
  id:5:initdefault:
to
  id:3:initdefault:

This will cause Linux to come up in multiuser mode.
I recommend this. If you want your user login to come
up in X then add these lines to your .bash_profile
(this also gives you a logfile of what's happening
in startx):

# start X on login
if [ $TERM = "linux" ]
then
  startx >~/.startx.out 2>&1
  exit
fi

oops, forgot to add, at the lilo login prompt type:
LILO: linux single

This should put you in an admin mode where you can edit /etc/inittab.

And for those of you _in_ the United States, April Fools is a fairly
common tradition throughout the rest of the world as well.

There is a -v option to mcopy, but I don't know what, if anything,
it does. The documentation does not say. One could of course look
at the source to find out.

You may need to recompile the kernel - see the Kernel HOWTO at
linuxdoc.org. Add support for Video4Linux, the bttv driver and (for
teletext, if you have it) saa5429, IIRC.

Then xawtv works perfectly. Also, if you have a remote control, a
program called lirc (search freshmeat.net) lets you work it.

Subject: Newbie: boot from HD i.s.o. from floppy
Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2000 17:03:13 +0200

I've build my kernel on a floppy, and I use this disk to boot into Linux. If
the floppy isn't inserted, the system boots into Windows. Now I would like
to use Lilo (or another boot manager) to start, so that I don't need this
bootdisk anymore. How can I do this without having to rebuild the
kernel/reinstall Debian?

TIA,

Subject: Version numbering question
Date: Sat, 01 Apr 2000 10:55:06 -0500

Most programs in the open source world have version numbers like
nn.nn.nn. I know that the first one represents a major version, and
that the last one is minor fixes, but I was wondering if there was a
more detailed rationale behind the numbers. How do these version
numbers relate to "iterations" -- or does open source software not
really use an iterative/incremental process? And how do the numbers
relate to the version numbers on source files assigned when you "cvs
commit" a file? Or do the exact meanings of the numbers depend on
whoever is leading the project?
