I would wonder just what Dell did. Some guesses (don't know if any of
these are possible:
1) Dell set aside one drive (#0) as plain drive (not part of a RAID set) and
put the other 5 into a RAID set. Put lilo on the MBR of the lone drive
and set up this drive as the root file system. Mounted the 5 disk RAID
set as something else (/usr, /raid, /home, ???).
2) Dell set up the RAID set differently than you have it (maybe RAID 1
and not RAID 5).
3) Dell used some other magic to set up lilo or the MBR. This might
include the requirement that you specificly some special geometry to
fdisk or the kernel on boot up -- this might be because of some total
insanity with the BIOS on the RAID controller -- without this, lilo
cannot find the MBR (as the BIOS sees it).
4) Dell set up the system with Linux's *software* RAID logic and NOT the
hardware RAID (yes, this is strange and rather dumb).
It might also be that there is some BIOS settings that needs to be
changed because you re-configured the RAID setup. It might also be that
you need to enter setup and let the BIOS have a look at the re-made RAID
setup and change its little mind and settle itself down -- i.e. the BIOS
has detected a change and won't boot until you hold its hand and show it
that everything is really OK and that you really, really meant to change
things and that it is not a boot sector virus or some other
MS-Windows-ish cracker attack or something.

Is it possible from a Linux box that has PPTP/VPN connections to force
remote VPN users to use "MSCHAP", or alternatively to force them to use
"MSCHAP with data encryption".
Tests I have done indicate that you can use "any authentication including
clear text", but that's not a good idea security-wise.
In a worst-case scenario, can we log what encryption method the remote user
employs while connecting?

...try an earlier or later kernel. 2.2.16 appears fundamentally br0ken
wrt parallel-port devices; I had no luck at all trying to get it to
recognize parallel-port CD-RWs and ZIPs, despite performing all the
appropriate steps in the HOWTOs (which worked well on earlier kernels.)
Theoretically, all you should need is:
modprobe lp
modprobe paride
modprobe epat
modprobe pcd
modprobe pg
but no dice. I'd report on how 2.2.17 performs, but I have no
parallel-port devices atm to try it out on.

Yes, and yes. You ask for a value judgement. I'd say it is
'worthwhile' *for me*. But this depends on what you want/expect/need,
etc. One of my things is staying current, so upgrading always suits
me. YMMV.

I don't, but if I did in some kind of production environment, I would
not unless there was a need. And then I would do one test box, and run
my critical stuff for a while to see what bugs/incompatabilites lurk
(and yes bugs are inevitable).

Just curious, what's so annoying about "Sawfish" I'm running it now and
prefer it over "Enlightenment", including having more resources free
with sawfish. I do recall that I had to make some 'tweaks' to get
sawfish to look and behave like Enlightenment.
I run the Redhat 6.95 Beta.....don't think I'll be moving up to Redhat
7.0. I'm thinking Debian or Slackware's latest now for my next
'upgrade' (haven't ruled out Suse yet either). However, I think there
might be merit in waiting until the linux-2.4.0 kernel is released and
in the distros as well.

DOS doesn't really qualify as an OS. It is a set of executive programs.
There are ACM definitions of Operating Systems that are fairly well
accepted and DOS falls very short on resource management and scheduling.

Subject: Embedded linux: syncronizing system time w/o onboard HW clock

I'm working with an EBSA-285 evaluation board [SA-110 "StrongARM" CPU w/
21285 core logic chip], and am currently running Linux version 2.4.0-test8
as the OS. The board is configured for "host bridge" [a.k.a., "central
function"] mode -- i.e., it is acting as the host bridge for the system.
None of the boards in the system have a hardware clock on them; so there's
no "built in" hardware clock that Linux can use to set/sync the system
clock. The EBSA-285 platform is connected to an isolated (no Internet
access) LAN via a 3Com NIC. The other hosts on the LAN are standard PCs
running both Win2K and Linux (various kernel versions). The EBSA-285 board
uses 'bootp' to obtain its IP address and then 'tftp' to download a
compressed kernel image from one of the Linux hosts on the LAN. The kernel
then uses an NFS mount point as the EBSA's root file system.
Here's the problem: Once each day, Linux on the EBSA-285 resets the system
clock back to the epoch date -- i.e., Jan 1, 1970. My guess is that the
kernel is attempting to update the system clock based on the hardware clock,
and since there is no hardware clock, the kernel simply resets the system
clock to the epoch date/time. As you can probably imagine, this is causing
all sorts of problems for programs that rely on time/date information.
Short of using something like NTP -- which seems excessively complex for
this situation -- is there any other way to sync the system clock on the
EBSA with a clock on one of the Win2K / Linux hosts on the LAN? Ideally, I'd
like the EBSA's linux kernel to obtain the hardware (or even system) clock
time from one of the other Linux hosts on the LAN, and then to use that
date/time info to update the EBSA's system clock date/time [kind-of a
virtual hardware clock]. [FWIW, I don't have the 'difftime' utility working
yet on the EBSA-285 platform.] Any suggestions, pointers to FAQs, HOWTOs,
etc., would be appreciated...

In my experience (using both an ASUS K7V and a Compaq Presario
1200-XL106 notebook), the standard kernel drivers for this chipset are
pretty weak. You're much better off using the ALSA drivers
(http://www.alsa-project.org). These can be a nuisance to install (hint:
read the instructions. Read them again. Read them a third time for
luck), but once installed, they work pretty well.

This has two problems:
a) As noted, WINE is a bit tricky to get set up;
b) There is _no_ guarantee that it's a viable solution in the long
run.
The latter is quite important; Microsoft seems to be moving to having
applications depend heavily on COM+, which may be a bit more difficult
to appropriately emulate.
Thus, if you go with the last Win32-based version of QB, all may be
well. But if you run payroll, and need to keep QB up to date, it may
not be a viable answer _next_ year.
Now, there _are_ several commercial accounting packages that are
natively deployed on Linux, which eliminates the "how well are we
emulating today" issue.
How closely they compare to QB may be arguable; depends on your needs.
The one that is _likely_ most comparable is one from "Proven
Software." <http://provenacct.com/>

I am slightly not happy upgrading from RH6.2 to RH7.0, my printer/efax
did not survive the upgrade.
Gnome for non-root that died while I upgraded it with HelixCode is still
not fixed after upgrading to RH7.0 (I don't blame RH7.0
for that).
But the improvements to me are worth it.
RH7.0 now can use the last 20G of my 40G. RH6.2 could not format the
last 20G of my 40G with MaxBlast disk overlay set to look like a 2G hard
drive.
xcdroast can now erase my CD-RW.
The clock does not go back 7 hours when my computer puts my monitor and
harddisk goes to sleep.
gzip and tar does not core dump when handling big files. Still have a
2G limit.
If I have time, I will salvage the harddisk and perform a clean install
of RH7.0 and put all my stuff back.
