Subject: GNOME and ORBit installation
Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 10:37:21 GMT
I am having trouble with the compilation of GNOME and associated
libraries.
My first difficulty is with ORbit 0.4.3
I can CONFIGURE, MAKE and MAKE INSTALL however when I then run the GNOME
lib CONFIGURE
I always get an error saying that ORbit is not installed:
checking for orbit-config... no
checking for orbit-idl... no
checking for working ORBit environment... no
configure: error: ORBit not installed or installation problem
I don't really know anything about orbit, what I have to configure or
what environment
variables have to be set!
I would really appreciate any help on this matter....
Thanks in advance,
Jazzy(foot).

| I'm suspecting you have a *really* old HOWTO.
Well, I consulted the master page of the Linux Documentation
Project (dated July 12, 1999) which led me to the CDROM
HOWTO, which itself is dated March 24, 1999). This is about
as recent as one can get. I also looked all over for other
information and could not find anything. The relevant section
is http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/CDROM-HOWTO-6.html#ss6.10
and it says:
" 6.10 I have a "special" CD that can't be mounted
"
" The "special" CD is likely an XA disc (like all Photo CDs or "one-offs"
" created using CD-R drives). Most of the Linux kernel CD-ROM drivers do
" not support XA discs, although you may be able to find a patch
" to add support on one of the archive sites.
However, the author of the HOWTO has since answered my mail
(very promptly) and told me that it *is* indeed out of date.
I suspected this because I didn't see my problem reports anywhere
either. (I thought I had cancelled my article, complete with
spelling error in subject header, at that point, but I guess
I was too late).
| I use a CD-RW on my system to do backups. It works fine, it reads
| all CD formats I care about (including audio and photo CD),
Although, of course, it has its own drivers, no doubt...
I've since been told by someone, who I would expect should know,
that XA essentially *means* CD-R, but this does not seem to be
true. For one thing, this is not born out by the info at
http://recon.mdacc.tmc.edu/Doc/FAQS/cd_faq940.html#27.
Also, somone else told me that he has a choice in writing his
CD's whether to write CDROM or CDROM-XA format. He was
not aware until I asked him that he even had such an option,
and neither was the backup service I contacted. So tell me,
do you write your CD's in CDROM format or CDROM-XA format?
Does it matter? Shall I just let the backup service do
whatever it wants in this regard?
| and I
| don't even need to take my hard drive out of the computer and bring
| to some "place" to get it backed up.
I'm not sure why "place" is in quotes, but no need to rub it in!
I'd get a CD-R drive if I could afford it. But thanks for your reply.

You are forgetting something here.. Apple are free to screw Linux anyday
if they see that supporting LinuxPPC helps Be becoming a threat on the
Macs.
This is not about getting BeOS working on G3, thats IMO probably the
smallest problem. Look at Intel, they offer expertise to implement USB,
P3 optimizations, general exposure for Be and hopefully a lot more is
coming in the future (gcc with support for IA-64 architecture..). This
leaves invaluable resources to concentrate on the OS in itself.
If and when LinuxPPC is well enough documented and running perfectly
(with no hacks) on the iMacs, a cheap port of Be would run a lot
machines... this could create some Buzz, but issues like the cost of
maintaining support must be dealt with.
Right now, I'd say Be's hope on PPC would be a combined gaming
platform/settop box machine. The trick to get set-top machines into
the hands of millions of users is the sell them as traditional game
consoles.
Enough rambling..

Yes, Windows time sync clients do exist. I use SocketWatch on all of my
Windows 98 and 95 boxes, and like you I use xntpd on my LINUX platforms.

I've been trying to set it up for the last three months to no avail.

If anyone has seen this error before, or knows where some sort of

Hi to all,
I'm trying to setup COMPAQ computers for the company I work. I'm
using the kickstart proces, which I finally got to work both for 5.2 and
6.0 (6.0 works without any quirks, but 5.2 is a bit more &^*&&(*&(*& )
Since I'm setting up a server, and on the models I works with, the
TLAN adater is a builtin adapter to the machine. Under the 6.0 setup,
it picks it up no problem, but with the 5.2 setup, it is a no go.
I tried to rebuild the initrd.img image on the boot disquette to
include the tlan.o module so that the disk could have support for
it (module compiled from other 5.2 machine). Rebuilt the image. At the
end of the setup, where it tries to probe for NICS, it still does not
detect anything for the TLAN, even though I've specified the IRQ # in
the kickstart file
Did anyone got to get this type of NIC detected at startup and how
you did it would definitly be appreciated.... Is it wither by
recompiling the Kernel on the disk to include it or as a module ???
Thanks in advance.

You can definitely send 16-bit data over an 8-bit channel... it just
goes as 2 separate transfers per sample. This is fully documented
in Creative's SDK, CTSBHWPG/EXE (686 K), which you can
download from:
wwww.soundblaster.com/wwwnew/tech/ftp/ftp-dev.html
This document doesn't cover the CT417x models (ViBRA
and WavEffects) specifically, but they are the same in this
respect. (The big difference is that they can do 16-16 full-
duplex, which the other Creative ISA cards can't... but there
is a propietary trick to enable it. Developers have to sign a
non-disclosure agreement.) Hope this helps!

Thanks for the response!
I looked into this option BUT the cvt.exe utility apparently only
comes with Win98. This is how I had thought it would work when I
started this whole thing.
To get LILO to work I have tried all the patches and instruction I
could find in Deja News. I have recompiled with the suggested options
and still no luck. It just looks like LILO is NOT re-writing the
partition type information AND not giving me an error message about
it. The MAP option is working PERFECTLY so I just don't understand
the problem.
Any one else have this working who would be willing to post their LILO
version number and lilo.conf contents.

the DOS6.22 games directory to stop the remapping of the CDROM from D:
