To get a HTML page, use e.g. Lynx in the following way:
$ lynx -source http://www.the.page.com/path/to/file > thefile.html
That way you get the whole page, with links and everything (saved in
'thefile.html')

Subject: RH7 Kernel Compiling Problem
Date: Sun, 15 Oct 2000 12:23:08 -0400
Hey folks...
Having problems recompiling a kernel in RH7. My steps are:
1. cd /usr/src/linux (symbolic link to linux-2.2.17)
2. make xconfig (import default Redhat config - make a few minor
changes - save)
3. make dep
4. make clean (as directed by several sources, though I know some
people dont' do this)
4. make bzImage
This, of course, is where the problem comes in.
I get several "warning" messages which I don't think are a problem,
but here they are:
cdrom.c:1247:84: warning: pasting would not give a valid preprocessing
token
# I also get this warning in tcp.o and tcp_input.o
/usr/src/linux/include/net/ip_masq.h:273:26: warning: nothing can be
pasted after this token
# I get this in a few other files as well
Here's the fatal one:
make -C arch/i386/lib
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.2.17/arch/i386/lib'
make all_targets
make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.2.17/arch/i386/lib'
cc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/include -D__ASSEMBLY__ -traditional
-c checksum.S -o checksum.o
checksum.S:231: badly punctuated parameter list in #define
checksum.S:237: badly punctuated parameter list in #define
make[2]: *** [checksum.o] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.2.17/arch/i386/lib'
make[1]: *** [first_rule] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.2.17/arch/i386/lib'
make: *** [_dir_arch/i386/lib] Error 2
Crapped our, sir... Any suggestions (or if you need more info to
diagnose) would be very much appreciated...
Also, I've got an AMD K6-2 processor and have been choosing
accordingly in the xconfig setup. Does this make any difference?
Thanks!

Oh boy, here we go again... :)
For the viewers that have just tuned in, there was a tread on
comp.os.linux.misc not so long ago that discussed the need for and use of
the /boot/System.map file. There also seemed to be some confusion about how
to handle 2 different kernel's in /boot, and the two different
/boot/System.map files that go with it.
Although there was no conclusive evidence, the current status seems to be as
such:
System.map is a "map" of your kernel. It contains info about the entry
points of the functions you compiled into your kernel, and de-bug
information. The kernel itself knows the addresses and entry-points, but
that file is needed for some programs which need info about kernel entry
points. These programs are klogd(8), ksymoops(8), depmod(8), and the procps
tools (ps(1), top(1), ...). These programs don't all do the same thing in
looking for System.map files. depmod(8) doesn't need a System.map file if
it's operating on the currently running kernel. ps(1) and klogd(8) like to
find a System.map file, but don't look in the same places.
You may have noticed that I have taken the liberty of cross-posting this
message to os.linux.development. Although this may seem a little bit odd, or
off-topic for this newsgroup, but I guess that the only people who can
really clarify what system.map is used for and how you should handle two
kernels&map files are the guys who actually know something about the
source-code :)

I have a advent laptop with a built in pci (I think) modem. I have
reason to beleive that it is a winmodem. When I go to hyperterminal and
type ati3 I get "Pctel 7.5504MS" as the reply. In the modems section of
control panel it calls itself a "V.90 K56flex HSP PCI modem". Is there
any hope of getting this to run under linux? I have tried a few pctel
drivers from http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html but they don't
work when I go to minicom (no reply from the modem). Has anyone managed
to get this modem to work, or is there no hope? Where can I get drivers
for it?

The warnings come from the gcc-2.96 compiler. There's been some
controversy about RedHat using this as their default compiler in
RH7. However, with RH7 RedHat wants you to use the provided kgcc
~ egcs/gcc 2.71 (I think) instead of gcc, for kernel compiles.

Does anyone else have a system set up using:
Slackware 7.1, Linux-2.2.16, and a mother board
with the AC_97 codec installed?
The AC_97 module can be loaded (modprobe) but
when GNOME, KDE, anything tries to use it, nothing
happens except "DSP: No Device" messages continuously
display on the screen (about once a secnd).
Yes, the audio has been configured in the kernel (had to
build because it is a SMP MB).
Yes, audio is turned on in the BIOS.
/proc/pci ......
Bus 0, device 31, function 5:
Multimedia audio controller: Intel Unknown device (rev 2).
Vendor id=8086. Device id=2415.
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. IRQ 17.
Master Capable. No bursts.
I/O at 0xe800 [0xe801].
I/O at 0xef00 [0xef01].
I built a removable drive with W98 on it and booted.
It detected the AC_97 (I believe it thought it was a Crystal
audio system) and sound works fine.
Yet no audio with Linux.
Any clues (e.g. bad driver module, etc.)?
cheers..bob

Make sure that your ipchains is allowing the bootpc protocol through your
firewall (ipchains rules). If not, after the least expires it will be
unable to renegotiate a new lease and fail. Have a look at /etc/services
with a text editor and find the bootpc protocols. Add that to your rules
and you'll be set.
I use SuSE 6.3 which has an ipchains configuration utility. This takes my
attention away from the dirty work of setting up rules, but limits my
ability to give more helpful advice. I discovered this problem by turning
up the logging on my SuSE configurator (/etc/rc.firewall) and looking for
the bounced dhcp negotiate transactions and which ports / protocols were
being used. In my case, the log files to look at are /var/log/firewall and
/var/log/messages. Not sure if yours will be the same or not. Good Luck.

Is there such a thing as a decent graphical mail program for Linux,
which supports POP3 and SMTP? I have spent all day looking through
dselect for such a thing.
I would like a simple interface which will let me save messages in an
outbox, to be sent when I connect to the internet via my modem. I
have tried both balsa and spruce, but both seem to be very early in
development, and I can't get either to work with any degree of
success. Emacs doesn't seem to offer any easily configured mail
clients either. I don't want to have to go through exim or sendmail,
but straight to my ISP's server.
Ashamed as I am to admit it, Outlook Express does nearly all that I
want. POP3 and STMP, easy folder management, along with an outbox for
saving messages when offline, and a sent items folder. (The search
facility is also excellent).
If you use a program that has these features, or know of one, please
let me know. (I will also be happy to use a text-based one, if it is
any good).

Yes, that is why kgcc is there.

You will have to provide more specific information on you setup to receive any
help. What ports are they connected to?, what interrupts and irq are you
using, etc.... I am not an expert but managed to get my stuff working.

Hi!
I have a problem with my ensoniq soundcard. I configured the sound
when installing debian on my system a couple of weeks ago but the kernel
module doesnt seem to be working at all. I tried a "cat /proc/pci " that
gave me the following
output:
Bus 0, device 12, function 0:
Multimedia audio controller : Ensoniq ES1371 (rev 4).
Slow devsel. IRQ 9. Master Capable. Latency = 64. Min Gnt=12.
Maxlat=128.
I/O at 0xef00[0xef01].
i then did a "modprobe es1371" and it executed with no error messages.
I fired up xmms and tried to play mp3s -- it gave an error saying
"couldnt
open audio".
According to the linuxdoc.org Sound HOWTO a "cat /dev/sndstat" should
give
me the configuration details of the soundcard. When i do a "cat
/dev/sndstat" it gives me this output:
---*start*---
OSS/Free:3.8s2++-971130
Load type: Driver loaded as a module
Kernel: Linux gongura 2.2.17 #1 Sun Jun 25 09:24:41 EST 2000 i686
Config options: 0
Installed drivers:
Card config:
Audio devices:
Synth devices:
Midi devices:
Timers:
0: System clock
Mixers:
---*end*---
The original kernel module had been configured with the "modconf"
utility.
I would really appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this
issue.
thanks,
Kailash.
