All of a sudden all output to /var/log/messages has stopped.

The file is zero length so it may have happened on a "rotate", but I don't
know where. It would be a rotate that got installed way back when as part of
the initial install, which was a long time ago. It's been behaving real good
(many years).

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Well then, why don't you just start StarOffice....
You might also try mswordview.

Both the DVDCCA and the manufacturer are FUDding. This particular
driver (IIRC, AFAIK, and all that :-) requires you to buy their
specific video card. Yes - video card.

The analogy would be, for instance, if someone made an MP3 player
that required you to use their sound card. Even in the Windows
world I doubt that this would sell very much - I may be wrong!

As far as I am concerned there isn't one, unless you count decss.

It is too early to count our chickens. Microsoft is relying
on conservative (i.e., not interested in anti-trust) appelate
judges and a Bush victory---he is on record against aggressive
anti trust enforcement---to win in the end. In other words
the fix is already in.

Microsoft's threat to Linux is not the same as its threat to
other would be monopolists in the computer industry. What we
have to fear is that Microsoft will take over supposedly
open standards and tie them to hooks in their operating
systems. Already there are web sites that can't be accessed
under Linux because they cater only to users of IE explorer.
They have tried the same thing with Java. Companies like
IBM and Sun can and will cut their deals with MS when it
suits them, but by its very nature, the open software community
can't.

Let me guess -- you did a fresh install of RedHat Linux 6.1? There is a
*small* bug in the installer for RedHat Linux 6.1. You need to add a
line to /etc/conf.modules:

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc

And restart kerneld:

killall kerneld; /sbin/kerneld&

">
"> what can i do to get linux to print

For the Epson LQ, you can use the epson driver in with resolution set to
360x180. Once you 'fix' /etc/conf.modules and restart kerneld,
printtool will see your printer port and you can click on the 'select'
button next to 'Input Filter' and select Epson Dot Matrix, 24 pin.
You'll want to restart lpd if this is the *first* printer you've added,
and send a PostScript test page.

I don't know about the Lexmark printer.

Didn't know about ctl-V. It will be quite helpful--thanks! However,
for dos to linux, I find the following to work just fine, and is easy
to read:

tr -d "\r" <dos.format.file >linux.format.file

I know it will not always be an accurate translation, but it's quick and
usually adequate.

First, don't feel you are tied to using the Corel product.
You can get the standard RedHat (or Suse or ...) CD from
Cheapbytes or Linuxmall for $2 plus shipping. Or you can
buy the standard CD with some hard copy documentation for
about $30 through many sources including stores. (The documentation
is also on the CD in most cases.)

You probably have Windows on one partition filling your entire
disk. (That is the most common situation.) If so, you first
need to reduce the size of the Windows partition. The Linux
distribution should include a DOS program called fips2, which
can be used to resize the Windows partition. But in some cases,
the vendor makes this difficult or impossible by placing files
at the end of the partition which can't be moved with dfrag.
(fips will only work on a defragged partition.) In that case,
you have to get a commercial product like Partition Magic.
If you use PM, I would recommend not installing it on the
disk, but using the installation wizard to make an emergency
floppy for PM and then using that to do the resizing.
I think there may also be other free resizing utilities
available on the web.

Once you have resized your Windows partition, the Linux release
will probably be able to do everything else that is necessary
for installing Linux, including creating the needed Linux
partitions. I've done this many times.

One potential problem with some large disks is that current
releases of Linux use a program called lilo to boot Linux
(and Windows) from the hard drive. But because of
obsolescent BIOS restrictions on many computers, lilo must
find what it needs for booting below cylinder 1024. If
your windows partition extends beyond cylinder 1024, you
probably won't be able to boot Linux from your hard disk.
However, you can set up in that case to boot Windows from
the hard disk and to boot Linux from a floppy. Sometimes
doing that requires a bit of fiddling, so if you get stuck,
seek advice. It is not really very hard. However, with
an 8 GB disk, there is a good chance you won't encounter
this problem if you you split it in half for Windows and
Linux. Partition Magic will warn you if you are not below
the 1024 cylinder limit. If you use fips2, just make sure
you allow about 10 or 20 MB free above the upper limit for
the Windows partition and below cylinder 1024. That will
be enough for lilo to work.

You can use ipchains to log all connection attempts to the finger port:

ipchains -A input -p tcp -d 0/0 79 -y -l -j ACCEPT

Or you can install a logger like ippl, get it at

All the zoot images I've seen have dates on the FTP servers from close to
a month ago (3/9, IIRC). Therefore, my guess is they're beta versions of
6.2. When I checked two days ago, the redhat-6.2-i386.iso images were
almost impossible to find -- I only found it one place, and it had
permissions set so it couldn't be downloaded. :-(

Also, in the early text adventure game "Adventure" by Willie Crowther et al.
when you wanted the golden eggs to return to the nest room you would say
