The XFree86 is not part of the kernel. You could no more add support for
newer AGP cards to an old version of XFree86 by changing the
configuration files than you could get a Windows driver for a Matrox
Millenium to work with a Riva TNT card by editing the Windows registry.

Won't work. You need a modern XFree86 installed as part of a modern
Linux distribution.

Theoretically, if you are a kernel programming expert and have a lot of
time on your hands, you could hack an old kernel to support whatever you
like. Why bother? The 2.2 kernel is fantastic and supports all manner of
fancy hardware out-of-the-box.

The hacker mentality says why the hell would you want waste time
incorporating 2.2 features into a 1.2 kernal?

If you don't like Redhat get another distribution.

If you want to run Linux to hack the kernel install a new distribution
and help out with 2.3 development.

If you want a Linux installation to run Linux applications get a modern
2.2 based system and you find life much easier.

I got this earlier this evening trying to play an audio CD on my ATAPI CDROM
drive using GTCD as my X CD player app.

My CDROM drive identifies itself as:
hdb: SAMSUNG CD-ROM SCR-3231, ATAPI CDROM drive

This is the error, according to the syslog:

Any (real!) explanation to what this means or advice for how to fix this
would be very much appreciated. Note the CD in the drive was there from boot,
so it hadn't been changed suddenly...

I have the AIWA TD-20001 SCSI. Not the same drive, but it is TR-5,
SCSI, and by AIWA. It works great under Linux. It is simply a SCSI
tape drive. mt, tar, dump, restore, taper, etc. all work fine with
it as /dev/st0, /dev/rmt0, or the non-rewinding versions /dev/nst0
and /dev/nrmt0.

Here is the output from "mt -f /dev/st0 status":

drive type = Generic SCSI-2 tape
drive status = 512
sense key error = 0
residue count = 0
file number = 0
block number = 0
Tape block size 512 bytes. Density code 0x0 (default).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (41010000):
 BOT ONLINE IM_REP_EN

I suspect the TD-8000 will work as well.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Greetings!

OK, I've searched DejaNews and FreshMeat for the last hour and have
found only the faintest of clues. Could someone please point me in the
right direction?

I need a program which can filter out the hum from a .wav file.

I have an old (50's vintage) open reel tape which was originally
recorded on cheap equipment. I have a player and I can record it into a
.wav file. I can use cdrecord to burn it onto a cdrom as a lasting
treasure for the friend who recorded this back in highschool. The lack
of fidelity is understandable and acceptable. But the background hum is
terrible.

Does anyone know of a program which can take a .wav file and filter out
the hum?

I found three programs in freshmeat which claim to do filtering, but I
would like to avoid several days of downloading, installing and
experimentation if I possibly can :-).

So, can anyone say, "Yes, I use xxxx to do that and it works quite
well."?

Thanks for the help.

I've got an internal 56k modem which just looks like an additional

(It's a Vobis notebook, only available in Germany and some of its

Subject: My crazy email scheme
Date: Sat, 17 Jul 1999 22:19:53 GMT

I have a crazy email idea that I think requires some fancy software. But
first, let me tell you what I know about email delivery.

Assume I'm [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Here is the process from start to finish.
dynamic dialup IP - My Computer (I write message to [EMAIL PROTECTED])
 |
 | (SMTP commands)
 V
mail.chicagonet.net
 |
 | (Protocol unknown to me)
 V
mail.sprint.net
 |
 | (POP3 Commands)
 V
Joe's computer (floating IP)

here's the problem. I have an account ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), but I
also have an account at NetForward ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). Mail to
NetForward gets forwarded to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (this way if I
change my ISP...) When I send mail out, chicagonet refuses to let me put
my return address as [EMAIL PROTECTED] (to prevent spam).

So here's my idea. Why not eliminate mail.chicagonet.net from the
outgoing chain? Like this:

dynamic dialup IP - My Computer (I write message to [EMAIL PROTECTED])
 |
 | (Protocol unknown to me)
 V
mail.sprint.net
 |
 | (POP3 Commands)
 V
Joe's computer (floating IP)

this way sprint gets what it wants and I can say my address is
[EMAIL PROTECTED] .

But what is this protocol that mail servers use to talk to each other?
Are there problems I havent forseen? If you know of software to do this
(preferably for linux) or of a protocol (RFC would be nice so I can
write my own program), please let me know.

Thanks in advance,
Andrew de los Reyes

Nope, the shell has no idea of what's going on in an application. If the
program itself doesn't write
any hint to cerr, there will be no system msg alike.

Subject: sendmail RH6.0 aliases database file format
Date: Sat, 17 Jul 1999 17:11:44 -0500

I've been trying to access the /etc/aliases.db file on RedHat 6.0. The
praliases.c source file in the sendmail source tree appears to use the access
methods in db.h, but if I compile praliases.c separately -- using #define
NEWDB, the executable does not behave the same as the installed
/usr/sbin/praliases executable.

A little debugging shows that the DB_VERSION_MAJOR value in db.h is 2, which
results in the compiling in the call to db_open instead of dbopen. But the
call to db_open fails! Upon looking at the RH6.0 executable
/usr/sbin/praliases, I noticed a reference to "dbopen" instead of "db_open".
But "dbopen" is not defined in db.h!

I fixed the problem by linking in the db1 library routines (with header files
in db1/db.h, and which use dbopen instead of db_open) instead.

My question is: how can I reconcile the sources distributed with RH6.0 and the
executables purportedly generated from them?

No, Holger is complaining about the (valid) interoperability
problems of the IP stack in Linux vs the rest of the world.
Specifically, interoperability between BSD-derived stacks
(which makes up a substantial portion of the total boxes
on the internet, just behind MS and substantially more than
Linux) and Linux. Holger's concern for interoperability comes
from his own experiences as a developer of a TCP/IP stack
for the Amiga (derived from BSD reference code). Many others
have had similar problems getting the Linux developer "cloud"
to admit to bugs in the networking code that represented less
than common situations.

>It seems to me that a good many developers have ported their
>code to linux and its IP protocol without much problem.
>This just seems to be a serious case of Microserf style
>FUD. JMHO.

Again, this isn't about writing code for Linux, this is about bugs
in Linux's implementation of it's IP stack (and thus it's ability
to interoperate with other IP stacks). Before you blow off
someone's argument, and start making comments about his
motives perhaps you should _READ_ his argument.

Interoperability is the fundamental concern with network stacks
because a network stack that cannot interoperate smoothly with
other stacks is both bad for it's users, and bad for the rest of
the folks who are exposed to its problems on the net. Linux has
some problems in this regard, mostly due to things Holger had
mentioned (such as the general lack of interoperability testing
by Linux developers in a formal setting, which is essentially
required to ensure a stack is meeting ALL of the spec, not just
the commonly used parts).
