2.3.0 is a devel kernel and 2.5.5 just don't exist. Try with the latest
stable, 2.2.10 (or 2.0.37).

The Glibc2 shipped with RedHat 5.2 is fine. I'm using it on my 5.1 box.

Try with 2.2.10 to see if you get this (I doubt).

Hi all,

I have Redhat 5.2 installed with kernel 2.0.36. I have tried to upgrade
the kernel to 2.3.0 but keep on getting an error (the error is attached
below). I also tried with the 2.5.5 kernel and got exactly the same
error message. I checked the Changes document for required software
versions and upgraded the ones that weren't. The only thing that I
wasn't sure about was whether I had the correct libc version, but it
seemed to look OK.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Martin Lucas.

The point is extremely well taken. There are just to many variables to
consider to say "A" is best or "B" is best --across the board ---.
Obviously, if all the hardware I owned was a relic 386 or 486, then I am
probably not dropping big money on Solaris ... or Coherent or any other
form of "big bucks / big iron" Unix.

However, I find the Linux 6.0 (Mandrake) fairly screams on my P5 166 with
64 m ram. It didn't come free ... it set me back the outlandish sum of
$29.99 (retail at Borders Books) ... but the price / performance ratio
still stifles the Win9x on the other partition.

I really like the quantity and quality of the application software
available for Linux. I find it mildly amusing that Sun has written a Linux
emulator for Solaris :) And a REAL gas that I can run Win9x on my Linux
box using VMWare ... and thus run the full library of Win9x programs and
Win 3.x programs and DOS cli programs.

So much for the "no applications" FUD. Linux can now (with a little help)
run everything Windows can and a lot of truly wonderful stuff that WIndows
CAN'T :)

Neener neener!

Odlly enough, I know one such individual. However, as he heads a NT-centric consultancy

(and seems well off financially) his assertions are "suspect". If maintaining NT

boxes is so easy, I am tempted to go work for him :)

The conflicts of capitalism are without physical force. What kind of war
is this? A war without force... that's silly (unless you meant to say a
trade war or a price war ... but not the kind of war -- a bloody war --
you were talking about!)

And you can say "I quit". I don't know of any dictatorships in all of
history where that is the case.

You can become self-employed if you so desire.

Real, laissez-faire capitalism is based upon the individual rights to
life, liberty, and property.

Agreed.

That's why the rights of life, liberty, and property must be respected.
Anything less is destruction.

And if you have the right to your property -- including yourself -- and
the liberty to dispose of it as you please, then you're free to trade as
you please. And since those rights must be protected, your can't infringe
on other's rights by physical force. There is a system which allows people
to trade their property (including their labor) at their own free will,
without physical force. I call that system "real, laissez-faire
capitalism." I don't know what you call it.

>how appalled would you be if someone advocated letting psychopaths run

Define a capitalist. Define capitalism.

Hi all,

I think my 1st message wasn't quite clear.

I am suggesting a SOLUTION to a problem that many KDE users with
RedHat and Mandrake distributions WILL have during installation.

>From my experience with repeated fresh installs, I can only
get a PAP or CHAP ISP connection when I change the modem speed in kppp
at least ONCE. This works around a CONFIRMED bug which is going to be
fixed in the next KDE release.

My old message:

I had kppp dial-up setup proplems with kde in the Mandrake 6
distribution (which is based on RedHat 6).

The problem was that whatever I tried, the error message was:

the ppp daemon died unexpectedly

The current official solution to this setup problem which appears to
be caused by the distribution is:

Change the modem speed under the modem tab of the kppp setup once.

After the change, (I set it up from 57,000 to 115,000) you
can change it back to what you like.

Regards,
Bernie

to get 16,24, and 32 bit modes, but when i typed : startx -- -bpp 16 , the

You may want to try using xvidtune to tune the video mode by hand. Then you
can fix the mode numbers in your XF86Config file when you come up with a
good mode.

Relax... Bogomips is short hand for bogus mips. I also felt cheated
whrn my PII 300 showed less bogusmips than a friend p166... Until I read
the Howto, different processors are suposed to give different numbers,
it's only used to check that your CPU is working corectly, not an
example of who has the fastest machine.

Check the Howto, it's all explained

Thanks for your help ! :)
I'll examine the script, and change the data...

Anyway, how do you call it ? I mean : do you call it allways,
and have a look what it did... (to what SMTP it is set...),
or, before that do you check the configuration ?

I think that maybe it would be better to call with either :
smtp-server-name1, smtp-server-name2 (2 scripts)
or :
smtp name1 smtp name2 (1 script with 1 parameter)

Subject: DAT tape refuses to load - help?
Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 09:35:39 GMT

I think this topic has been mentioned before but I cannot track down an
answer in any of the newsgroups. Help would be appreciated.

When inserting a DDS3 tape into a HP surestore drive, it just goes in
and then comes straight back out again. I did once manage to get a tape
loaded, but all attempts since then have failed.
It is connected to an Adaptec SCSI controller, and I am running RedHat
5.1

Thanks in advance,

Does your modes line say something like: "1280x1024" "1024x768"? Then try
to remove the "1024x768", if you want the 1280.. resolution.

No, this is absolutely correct. However you can only delete the files (ie
write a new directory listing) is you also have `w' for that directory.
Similaryly you can only create new files with the `w' permission.
