Hi All,
I have noticed that if I leave a Win95 filesystem (vfat) mounted
overnight, the next moring my RedHat 6.0 system is frozen solid. The
only way out is to reset the PC. I even tried to telnet in from another
system on the network, but nothing.
In the /var/log/messages file this is what I found. And 04:02 was the
last time my system
did anything. After a reset, Linux does it's usual fsck on the
partition, but much worse than
normal. It moved over a 100Mb to the /lost+found directory. I had 98
files and 12 directories in there. This happens every time I forget to
unmount my vfat partitions.
Any idea why this would happen? It happened 3 times already. This 1st
time, it costed me a re-install of Linux. I would love to get rid of the
vfat partition, but unfortunately I have to dual boot every now and
then. This is my production mashine at work, not my personal mashine,
so the problem is quite serious.

Subject: eth problems
Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 08:04:29 -0400
Greetings all,
Currently I'm trying to install a 2nd ethernet card into my computer,
but I'm having problems doing so. Using the kernel configurator I
installed the 2nd card, which is a LinkSys Etherfast. I looked on the
LinkSys webpage, which claims that the card is compatible with RH6 and
uses the TULIP module for installation. This method was used for the
installation of the first ethernet card, a 3com model 3c59x. This first
ethernet card works correctly, but I'm having problems with this second.
Whenever I try and activate the card under the network configurator, I
get the error message "ETH1 DELAYING INITIALIZATION". Both of these
cards are pci.
Next I tried "cat /proc/pci" to check out the configuration of both of
these cards. According to this, my SCSI card has IRQ=9, along with both
of these ethernet cards. I tried to change the LinkSys cards IRQ within
the Kernel Configurator, but when I restarted the kernel I noticed no
changes within /proc/pci. I believe this to be the problem. Hopefully
when I change this 2nd card's IRQ to an available one, it should work.
My questions are:
How can I know what IRQ's are available for me to set the card to?
How can I change the ethernet card to the specified IRQ?
I will also probably need to change some of the settings within the BIOS
as well, but I didn't want to just start changing IRQ settings until I
knew which one to set the card to.
I did a modprobe of eth1 and I got the following message,
/lib/modules/2.2.5-15/net/tulip.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
then I did a dmesg | more and got:
Unknown Tulip-style PCI ethernet chip type 11ad c115 detected: not
configured.
Hope that this helps in the diagnosis.
Any help would be greatly GREATLY appreciated!!!!!
Thanks,
Paul

Indeed.
Does anyone outthere have some in depth knowledge of Shiva dialup
servers ? I`ve tried getting Miami DX to connect without success. I did
read somewhere that there is some in built Shive tech within WIN95/98
Any Ideas ?

Should I try switching from 2.2.7 to 2.2.10 ??

OK. I'll try also the pseudo-manually load of this module ;)

You may try the gnu-licensed bash from www.cygnus.com which contains a
set
of unix tools/commands.
Additionally there is the commercial mks-toolkit; very complete, works
great.

The problem you're seeing is that qmail queries domains incorrectly for their
MX information. It (foolishly, IMHO,) does an "any" query and gets a ton of
information back. From there, it tries to find the MX records, and then
delivers mail to those hosts.
The correct (again, IMHO) way to do the query is to start with a directed MX
query (like in nslookup, 'nslookup -type=mx aol.com') and go from there.
Sendmail seems to handle this just fine. :-)

Hi all
I wanted to know ....
Does KDE 'support' (if that is the right word) dockapps. I have done
some searches but could not find any.
Also has anyone managed to install Klyx on RH6.0?
I always get and error that it cannot find the qt libraries, no matter
what I try, when I run configure.
Thanks in Advance

Look in your kernel modules directory for a file called initio.o (the
directory is probably /lib/modules/2.2.9-19mdk/scsi). If it's there,
there's a chance it'll work automatically, whether or not you specified
Initio support on installation. If it doesn't try adding this line to
your /etc/conf.modules file:
alias scsi initio
then do a "depmod -a" command as root or reboot. (I'm not 100% positive
about that /etc/conf.modules line, since I don't need it as my Initio
support is compiled directly into my kernel.)
If you can't find the initio.o file, you may need to recompile your
kernel. I generally like putting SCSI drivers directly in the kernel, as
opposed to compiling them as modules, but you may have reasons to do
otherwise. If you need directions on compiling the kernel, I suggest you
get a good introductory book on Linux. Such books (GOOD ones) always have
instructions on compiling the kernel.

Yep, that is right.
If you install StarOffice as root, with just the plain ./setup
command, then it is only installed *for root*!
You want the multi user install that is not the default of StarOffice.
What you should do is this:
- Read the documentation (!)
- ./setup /net
- then log in as user and do another setup from the /opt/Office51/bin/
dir (which installs the stuff for your local user in his/her
directory).
Hope this helps.

Netgear's print server and hub combination is $124.09 at CDW. This assumes
you have an ethernet network.

Then you would have 0% employment. What is the incentive for labor? Why
shouldn't a person have the opportunity to make a better (subjective)
lifestyle? Who says I don't need that extra car or second home on the lake
or that ski trip or whatever else I choose to buy with what I have?
No, you will never attain 100% employment due to the fact that there are
those who simply choose not to work but why should they get the same as
everybody else? The opportunity for advancement drives people to do better
and be more productive.

I have a PII 450 MHz w/512 MB ram and a clean RedHat 6.0 w/updates .
When I take a look at cpu usage i kpm/qps most of the cpu is idle
(~85%), but load average reports around 2. Isn't load average a function
of cpu usage (only, mostly)? Can it be that some process is running, but
not showing in ps/top/kpm? I feel that the system response has been
reduced quite a bit after upgrading to RedHat 6.0.
Please email me as well as post to this NG!

An opportunity to make your life better is quite different to born as
rich... I mean my opinion is you make your money yourself - everything is ok,
but if you get money only because you born in wealth family sth is unfair.
It's not ok that some ppl can't even dream about buying second car, because
they born in poor family and have no chances to change his/her situation.
So the state should do sth to help poor's - even by taking money from
the rich and giving them to the poor.

Redhat is configured by default to run some cron jobs at 4:00. One of
these is updatedb, which updates the database used by the locate utility.
What it does is searches through your entire filesystem and adds all the
filenames it finds to the database. Why this causes your system to
crash when you have a fat filesystem mounted I don't know, but you can
eliminate the problem by editing /etc/cron.daily/updatedb.cron and adding
/mnt/vfat (or whatever) to the --prunepaths option. See the man pages
for updatedb and cron.
