Could someone please advise me how to setup the linux filesystem.
I am using a 3.2 gig h/d as my master drive and I intend to ONLY useRedHat

I get an FDisk error if I try and use DiskDruid. If I select skip during the
install I am presented with the "Setup filesystems" window. It displays as

I also found my way to Linux from Windows recently.

RealPlayer 5 for Linux never worked under my RedHat 6.0 either. The G2
Alpha however works great. It's at
http://www.real.com/products/player/linux.html

I use StarOffice for everything I used to depend on Office97 for. I find
StarWriter imports my old Word97 documents more cleanly and correctly
than does WordPerfect 8 for Linux but that's just my experience.
StarSchedule sucked in all my Outlook9x data with a little help.
StarBasic is similar enough to VBA to make writing new macros pretty
easy. However, I can't depend on StarOffice's email and web browser
components, too buggy in the current release. So I use Netscape 4.6 for
those duties, importing email folders from Outlook9x or Outlook Express
was no problem.

Got some irreplaceble Windows programs such as Quicken98 to run not too
badly under the WINE "emulator".

If I could get my goddam parallel port scanner working properly with
SANE I would be ready to remove my FAT partition altogether. One day at
a time...

Have fun and feel free to ask for help.

It was also suggeted to me, and it works, just to change the order in
which the bootable os's appear. Of course in both cases, neither of
you mentioned to also run /sbin/lilo to have the changes take effect
-- something that took a newbie like me a little while to figure out
:) . Thanks for your help -- man pages are sometimes of little
intimidating and cryptic.

Subject: Wanted: GPL or PD software for ITU standard communications
From: David Steuber <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 19:59:28 GMT

Hi folks!

I'm looking for C source code and documentation for audio
communications software that will work over TCP/IP (or UDP) using ITU
communications standards. The software needs to be under a free
license so that I can incorperate it into a free program.

The program I wish to write, if it does not already exist, is basicly
an Internet phone. If such software already exists, please point me
to download locations. If software does not exist, I am going to take
a shot at writing it. It will be GPL.

If anyone wishes to help me with this, let me know. The software will
be written in C. The core functionality needs to be portable to the
lesser operating systems like Windows. The GUI can be a rewrite for
those lesser OSs, unless someone knows a free X toolkit that will do
Win32.

Please post to me directly or at least CC to me. Thanks.

Basic packet path:

Host a <------------>PBX (public IP) <--------------> Host b

The PBX is the communications hub. It runs on a host with a public IP
address that both Host a and Host b can talk to. A and B may be
behind a NAT router using private IPs.

I will work up a more detailed document in TeX format as I discover
more requirements.

Salman Ahmed spoke thusly...

>Debian book "Debian GNU/Linux : Guide to installation and usage"
>but couldn't find one. I found an HTML version but that was formatted

>very helpful.

Please don't crosspost; one group's enough.

I didn't really need any docs for Debian when I started; but then again,
I like not reading the instructions first - much more of a challenge :-)

dselect: use "+" to add a package, "_" to purge (remove config files;
"-" just deleted the program files). Press enter to get out of the main
package listing screen. Use "?" to get help and press space to get out
of that (or just try space/enter until it works). If anything else pops
up to do with packages needing other bits & bobs, just agree to it if
you're not sure.

Most users just advise to choose "Yes" to the "Do you want to perform
this step?" thing in the install (You'll know it when you see it), and
choose the basic <30 megs install (it doesn't install 600 megs of crap
like DeadRat does). Then, from the dselect main menu, choose the
"Access" method, accept the defaults. Then don't bother with the
"Select" bit as it's easy to screw up, so just choose "Install". Whizz,
bang, and a few minutes later, your basic system should be set up. Then
you can use dselect with a bit of confidence. (Note: At my first
install, I completely gave up with installing Debian. I went back to it
a day later and found it really easy...)

apt: Now this is real easy. Your /etc/apt/sources.list should be set
already for the US debian.org FTP site, just un-comment the non-us one
for all the packages (Apache-SLL, PGP, etc.). I like VIM myself... (N)VI
sucks IMHO.

Want to upgrade everything you've got in Slink (2.1) to the latest in
"Unstable"? Simple:

apt-get update; apt-get upgrade

Want to install the latest slrn & leafnode?

apt-get install slrn leafnode

The programs will be downloaded and upgraded/installed automatically.
Kinda neat.

Note that "Unstable" is so-called for a reason; the new Perl 5.0005
package(s) are causing havoc with all the stuff which still says "This
package depends on Perl 5.0004...". Upgrading to Glibc 2.whatever was a
breeze.

>(2) I will be burning a CD in a couple of days and was wondering what
>.deb packages I should download to ensure I have all the updates for
>Debian 2.1. Any suggestions on what would be good to download ?

If you've got the bandwidth, use <http://cdimage.debian.org>. The CDs
are only 2 each, though (4 CDs: 2x binary, 2x source). Upgrading is
done by apt (as mentioned above).

>(3) Are there any Debian-specific sites (other than debian.org!) with
>.deb packages, docs, etc. ?

http://www.debian.org and the FTP sites hold all the binaries which the
vast (99.99999%) of people will ever need - around 2,500+ packages. You
can also get the sources by doing something like 'apt-get source
packagename' I think, which will download them, compile & install
automatically.

Okay; now I'm off to mess with my Perl script again... it's being a
right bugger.

Cheers,
  Kris

Will there be one for DOS?
(Probably not since it would need to run under Helix or Caldera

BFS is often described as a Journaling filesystem, but no-one has ever
explained what this means, and what advantages it would offer.

Hahaha... I've been thru that hell, and I'm still suffering thru it!!!
Anyay, you need to print out the installation instructions and follow them.
I tried to install before reading the instructions and wound up with the
same problems you're having. The instructions detail a lot of things you
need to do as root, as well as the oracle user before you actually begin
installation.

To set up the environment variables, I suggest:

ORACLE_OWNER=<oracle>;export ORACLE_OWNER

<oracle> being whatever the oracle user account is.

Also, if you run into problems installing (after you've gotten thru the
initial stages), such as some file won't do such and such... a lot of the
time there was another file with a big letter O attached to the end of it,
ex: svrmgrl didn't work, use svrmgrlO instead. You'll have to do a lot of
manual stuff if you get these problems. If you're familiar with Oracle, you
should be OK. Good luck.

Andrew

Hi,

I'm currently running linux kernel 2.2.10 with a couple of personal
modifications, and I need swap partitions that are slightly larger than 2GB
(1GB = 1024^3 bytes). I have created partitions that are 2100MB, but when I
mkswap, it truncates down to 2047M. Any suggestions on how to get this to
work would be greatly appreciated. I think it's a file size limitation
problem, but if anyone knows of any fixes, that would be great.

Your disk has on partition (hd1) that has all the disk space tied up in
it.
If this is going to be an all linux system, delete that partition, and
make
a couple of partition for linux.

workstation:
         / (200 MB)
         /usr (2GB)
         swap (memorysize*2)
         /home (the rest)
server:
         / (200 MB)
         /var (400 MB)
         /usr (0.6 GB)
         swap (mem*4)
         /home (0.6GB)
         /usr/local (the rest)

Do not meddle in the affairs of sysadmins,
for they are quick to anger
and have not need for subtlety.

I would really recommend getting one of the CD-ROM distributions and
installing from that, because it is usually much simplier, and you don't
have to guess which packages you need to download.
Look to http://www.cheapbytes.com for an example of cheap CD's
(Often the shipping ends up more than the CD's)
