Both the RedHat 5.2 and SuSe 5.3 stock kernels put my
laptop to sleep during boot. I was more successful awakening
RedHat, so it's the one I used to compile a new kernel.
I enabled APM and disabled Real Time Clock Enhancement
(I think that's the name of the entry, I'm in Windows and can't
check just now) and the problem was solved.
You may want to try disabling the Real Time Clock Enhancement.
This might be a goofy suggestion, but when you're desparate
you try a lot of things you wouldn't otherwise do.

rpm -ql package_name | more
will produce a listing of the full paths of all the files in the
package.

decided to begin adding Linux to its Netfinity servers -- the ones that
already come configured with NT.

Did you make a lilo boot disk when you installed? If so, all you need to do
is stick in the lilo boot disk, let it boot your system, log in and run lilo
(/sbin/lilo must be run as root).
If you did not make a lilo boot disk (this was probably an option when you
installed lilo--probably an option in the same menu, or the step that
followed your lilo installation), you can use your boot disk instead.
First, remember where your root partition is located. Boot off the linux boot
disk. When it asks for additional options or kernel options, enter
"mount root=<root device>" (something like "mount root=/dev/hda2").
Since you are running Windows, probably on the first hard drive partition,
your linux root partition is likely to be /dev/hda2 for an IDE drive or
/dev/sda2 for a SCSI drive. If linux is on a second hard drive, the root
partition may be /dev/hdb1 for an IDE drive or /dev/sdb1 for a SCSI drive.
Again, these are just guesses and/or suggestions if you don't remember your
root partition device.
If these are wrong, and you don't remember where your root partition resides,
boot off your boot and root disks. Look for the line where your partitions
are identified. The lines may look like:
hda: hda1 hda2 hda3 < hda5 hda6 hda7 hda8 >
hdb: hdb1 hdb2
The first line indicates that there are three primary partitions: hda1, hda2,
hda3. The four partitions within '<' and '>' are extended partitions residing
in hda3.
The second line indicates two partitions on a second hard drive.
Try to remember where you put your root partition. Is your entire linux
system on one partition? Is your root partition part of an extended partition
(one of the partitions inside triangular brackets)? Is DOS the first listed
partition, making linux one of the others? (If you had DOS preinstalled on
the machine, and you partitioned your drive to add linux to your hard drive,
DOS is probably the first partition)
When you determine your root partition, go back to boot off the boot disk. At
the optional parameters prompt, tell it "mount root=/dev/hdb2" where
/dev/hdb2 is your root partition. This should boot your system "normally."
Log in, su to root, run /sbin/lilo. Reboot.

I don't have anything for APM in my BIOS configuration.
I forgot to mention that the mouse does work in X Windows even if it
doesn't work in text-mode.

however, if the drive is not listed in /etc/fstab as a drive to mount,
linux cannot read/write to it and only root will know its there. This
may solve yr problem or not.

You did pretty fine with stickyhiosts in sendmail. BUT!!! Sendmail
doesn't do pop3. Sendmail just sends SMTP. What you need to do is
downlaod rinetd this is a portforwarding deamon. You install that on
your firewall/masquerading server and create a /etc/rinetd.conf file
wich dontains
ipaddress_firewall 110 ip_adress_pop3server_behind_firewall 110
