OH LORD......
2 Weeks of messing around - but now I have the solution !!!!!!!
I have installed RH 6.0 for SPARC using shadow password AND md5 password. It
seems, that the encryption of crypt() creates not the same password like
passwd does (perhaps a problem in my pam.d directory in the 'login' and
'other' file - anyone an idea ???).
I disabled the MD5 password encryption in the setup tool, (IMPORTANT: ) set
up the same passwords again with passwd (because otherwise the password
stays the same in /etc/shadow !!!) AND IT WORKED !!!!
Cyrus IMAP is working fine, and now I check qpopper again.....

I was disappointed in Ranish when I tried (admittedly over a
year ago now). At that time it didn't support either HPFS
or ext2 partitions so it was not very useful to me. This
may have chaged in the intervening year, though...

I'm running RH 6.0. On the man page (info lpr), the description of the -r
parameter says: (qouting)
-r remove the file upon completion of spooling. Can not be used with
the -s option, due to security concerns.
My guess is that the security concern is that some nasty person could use
the -r -s to delete a file which they only had read access to. Since the
lpd usually runs as a superuser, this could bypass normal permissions to
a file.

I have a PII 450 MHz w/512 MB ram and a clean RedHat 6.0 w/updates. The
/home partition is NFS mounted from and SGI. When I take a look at cpu
usage i kpm/qps most of the cpu is idle (~85%), but load average reports
around 2. Isn't load average a function of cpu usage (only, mostly)? Can
it be that some process is running, but not showing in ps/top/kpm? I
feel that the system response has been reduced quite a bit after
upgrading to RedHat 6.0.
Please email me as well as post to this NG!

I had this problem as well.
I think it is caused by inserting the sound modules using insmod (at
boot time). I replaced the insmod command by modprobe sb, and added some
lines to my /etc/conf.modules, so that my modules are only loaded when
needed automagically. If necessary, I can look up the related
conf.modules entries at home and post them here. Now I do not have this
annoying blast (which can be _very_ loud) anymore.
Kind regards,
Zeger.

Yes I have computer. I work quite hard to get it because i camo from
poor family (in poland there was not like in other countries low, middle and
upper class but inteligency, workers, peasants (farmers?) and bloody
capitalistic pigs (;-) ). Inteligency: that were lawyers, teachers etc.
It was ,,uncertain element'' and everything was first tyo workers, then to
farmers and if sth was left, it comes to intelligency. So everything i get in
life i get with hard work without help from family, government etc.
And yes, i am sending money to third world. I participate in many
actions organizated in poland . I send money to poor in poland. Not many, and
maybe not so much i could. But all i learned until now in life is that poor
people share with others, and rich never if they can.
But i said sth that if you get your money by yourself it's ok; But I
don't thindk is right that someone has everything in world just because he was
born in good family, and other will work whole life and get nothing. As said
my uncle : director of CPN is 20-years old boy, cousin of one of the directors
in capital. He earns 20 000 zlp in month., My uncle earns 500 zlp in month.
When he stays in night he can get 1000 zlp. Monthly he must pay 500 for
his home, 300 for food. What chances he has to achieve standard of life of
this 20-years -old boy ? What chances his children have to achieve education?
Without help - no chances. He is poor, his children will be poor, his
grandchildren etc.

HEllo!
I am running RedHat 6.0 on a 400Mhz double processor, 256MB SCSI
machine,
The machine runs database applications, and I have a php script
searching extensively in a MySQL database.
I suspect that the php script runs too slowly, and this may or may not
be associated with my problem:
While running this script I have twice experienced that the machine
hangs up.
It reacts normally to ping, but every attempt at communication (telnet,
ftp) fails. Even the console screen gets black!
Has anybody experienced this problem? What can be the cause?

I probably have the same problem on my compaq deskpro EP/SB (with a
PII/400 processor) It sometimes just blocks when booting linux. I tried
different linux implementations SuSE 5.3, SuSE 6.1 and even an older
Redhat and all react the same. I noticed that when I make a warm reboot,
or when the connected printer is switched on before the computer, it
will always fail to boot. When I make a cold boot and all periferal
devices are switched off, then the chances to boot correctly are aprox.
50 %. I noticed that the blocking happens when decompressing the kernel
(the first three lines when booting). I could check this by using
SHIFT-PGUP during booting. If the display is moving, then everything is
working OK. If it is stale, then it is already blocked. This litle trick
allows me to shut off the machine in time before it starts to mount the
HD partitions and saving me from a "forced check" the next time it is
booting. This is a temporary solution, and like Richard I would like to
find out how to solve this annoying problem.

I'm an MCSE so I needed to get multi-OS experience, so I picked up a

predict it to be the next great OS, once there becomes more apps

Problems with Tulip clone chips can usually be remedied by updating to
more recent Tulip drivers. I've used both Linksys (Lite-On PNIC chip)
and NDC SOHOware (Macronix chip) Tulip clones in a system with a
motherboard holding a VIA VP-2 (?) chipset, and the Linksys in a system
with a VIA MVP-3-based motherboard with no problems after updating the
drivers.

We wanted to put Linux and Win95 on a new disk.
We wanted a small C partition, a linux /boot and then half the disk
win95 and half the disk linux.
Problem was, the person installing win95 found the machine insisted on
formatting the whole disk as a C drive.
Finally got it working by creating a tiny C: partition. No other
partitions at all, format C:, then create linux partition, then create
other dos partition, format it, install win95, and last of all, complete
partitioning and install linux.
Works fine now.
I have not checked to see what size partitions windows95 thinks it has.

It has occurred to me that, although the standard backup utilities assume tape media,
other media might be substituted with good results. Specifically, tape drives and media
are currently expensive commodities, while CD-R/CD-RW drives and media are relatively
cheap. It would be nice to be able to use the magtape tools ('mt') against a CD-R or
CD-RW
device (i.e. multitrack CD-R where magtape would provide tape 'files': think "mt -fsf"
against a CD-RW device).
Has anyone seen a driver (or other software) that would cause a CD-R or CD-RW drive to
look like a tape drive to the magtape tools?
