i would try to reinstall as you should not have been asked to reboot at that
point.
you would normally partition, then select packages...and then install.
i'd suggest to give it another try...it took me a while to get the hang of
it...believe me.
also...don't panic about your machine being a paper weight as there is a
real nice utility
called aefdisk.com which you can download free from www.bootdisk.com
it's more powerful than dos fdisk and you can remove your linux partitions
and do a fdisk/mbr
if you do want to go bak to windows or something...
but just because it didn';t work the first time. don't give up.
you may also want to post exactly how you tried your install and what
hardware you have
as someone might be able to tell if there are some incompatiblities

It may *say* "SB compatible", but the CS423x chips are very different
from SB chips. Did you run "sndconfig"? If that fouls up, try the
following set of commands:
modprobe sound dmabuf=1
modprobe cs4232 io=0x534 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=9
modprobe opl3 io=0x388
You may have to use 0x530 and not 0x534 for the io= in cs4232. After
executing those commands, the speaker(s) should click, and you should be
able to play a sound through /dev/dsp using, f'rinstance, "wavplay
$SOMEFILE.wav".
>How can I determine what other application, if any, is indeed using

There's a useful utility called "fuser" which can tell you what (if
anything) is using a file. Your audio device is almost always /dev/dsp,
so "fuser /dev/dsp"? This sounds to me like your sound is configured
incorrectly, unless you can already use your sound card with wavplay or
xmms or any other sound-playing program.
If you can already play sounds via programs other than RealPlayer, the
problem is with RealPlayer. Search comp.os.linux.* for "Realplayer 7.0"
with http://deja.com/home_ps.shtml for info--I don't use it and so can't
help you with configuring it. HTH,

Date: 24 Oct 2000 21:20:07 -0500
I just tried to downgrade from libc6 2.1.95 to 2.1.3-10, and after the
newer version was deinstalled, the older version wouldn't install
because ldconfig is now missing. I can't install any other packages
anymore, and when I ran locate (mine is updated every morning at
7:45), it said ldconfig was in /sbin. Then I ran updatedb and it was
gone! Must have happened during this downgrade. So how to get it
back? Ldso is still there, and no libc6 package can be installed.
What to do? Have to get report done tonight and am at wits' end.
Any ideas?

I have just installed Redhat 7.0 in one of the partitions in my hard disk.

I have check BIOS to see if there is anything that I can do but I can't even

Howdy all!
I have installed Open Linux 2.3 on a 200MHz Pentium with 80 Mg of Ram.
This afternoon, I came to it and flipped on the monitor (I left in on
last night) and the machine was frozen. No Mouse, No keyboard,
nothing. I ended up rebooting.
I have a couple of questions. Because Caldera dumps me right into KDE,
if KDE freezes, how do I kill it and start over, or at least get to
the point that I can gracefully close down?
Also, is there a systems log that will give me an idea of what has
happened when it crashed? Thanks!

Is there a way to automate this repetitive process?

I think you have to install a Linux kernel source. It is likely your present
Linux source tree is incomplete.
Try this as root;
cd <enter>
puts you in /root directory
mkdir kernel <enter>
cd kernel <enter>
wget ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.2/linux-2.2.17.tar.bz2 <enter>
You should now have linux-2.2.17.tar.bz2 compressed kernel tree.
Lets clear the way for a fresh install;
rm -r /usr/src/linux <enter>
tar yxvf linux-2.2.17.tar.bz2 -C /usr/src <enter>
Rename the present kernel source tree;
cd /usr/src/ <enter>
mv linux linux-2.2.17 <enter>
Make a symbolic link;
ln -s linux-2.2.17 linux <enter>
Now have a look;
cd linux <enter>
Now;
make menuconfig <enter>
When you have picked out everything you want to include in your kernel,
place a fresh clean floppy disc in your drive and;
make mrproper dep bzdisk modules modules_install <enter>
When it's done;
mv System.map /boot <enter>
Reboot using the image on the floppy.
If there are problems, don't worry, your original Kernel is still on the
harddrive and will boot like always.
You may want to edit your /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file, commenting out
references to modules you no longer are using and un-commenting out those
that you do need.
If you want to make your new kernel the default just compile "make bzlilo"
instead of "make bzdisk".
Best regards,
Have fun.
Best regards,

I think your simlink idea should work, though I've never used the
technique myself. I would reconsider your partitioning scheme, however.
16 MB for /boot is more than enough. Also, 64-128 MB for / is plenty,
assuming you are also going to partition /var /tmp, for which that size
would also be more than adequate. If you plan on installing more than a
few applications, you might want to bump /usr up to 2 GB, even more if
you are into gaming--though it doesn't sound like you are going to be
using this box for that purpose. Give the rest to /home which can be
exported to your clients via NFS.

I have Redhat 6.2 with Kde installed. I have got all the standard
libraries like gcc,etc., installed. and have got Qt 2.1 beta libraries
(all) and Qtx - backward compatibility libraries. Whenever, i try to
install(./configure) any Kde application(compatible with RH 6.x systems),
I get the following message:
'checking for kde libraries installed... configure: error: your system
fails at linking a small KDE application! Check, if your compiler is
stalled correctly and if you have used the same compiler to compile Qt and
kdelibs as you did use now'
I think the prob may be due to the reason, i had installed 2 diff version
of QT from 2 different distributions.I uninstalled the older QT &
reinstalled Kde, but still the bug persists.

When you partition the disk, make sure the partitions are the same.
for example.
old -> new partition
hda1->hdb1 /boot
hda2->hdb2 swap
hda3->hdb3 /
lilo: linux single
# mount /mnt/new_harddisk
# # copy all directories under / to your new harddrive except you might want to
skip /proc because it is a virtual filesystem.
# cp -a /boot /mnt/new_harddisk
# cp -a /bin /mnt/new_harddisk

Microsoft has had to comply with at least some portions of the
standards for TCP/IP, HTTP, SMTP, and such, in interoperating with
Internet-based systems, so it's by no means as one-sided as you seem
to be implying.
In the end, the movie Highlander is _fictional_; it is not forcibly true
that "There Can Be Only One."

Well, ordinarily, I would refer you to the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard at
