Mostly out of curiosity, I've been wasting time trying to get seyon to
run. On the command line I type : seyon -modems /dev/modem
The returned error message claims the modem is not available or permission
is denied.
Minicom finds the modem with no difficulty and I have verified the port
and permissions in /dev/modem. Since I can use other communications
packages in Linux and X, this one isn't very important, but what am I
missing here? Thanks.

About 2 years ago I spent about 200 hours getting RH 4.0 to run on one of my
computers. It was a fiasco. Now I'm thinking about trying it again. I've
noticed that the NG's don't have the same kinds of problems I saw back then,
so I'm hoping it can be installed easier.
Anyone ever installed it on an Amptron PM-9100 motherboard? This has
integrated video and sound. Other than that I don't have anything unusual.
What are my chances of a clean install without any manual tinkering?

The best way to read news "offline" is to set up your own news spool.
The easiest of these to install for small systems is Leafnode.
http://wpxx02.toxi.uni-wuerzburg.de/~krasel/leafnode.html will have
more info on this server.

It really doesn't matter too much what newsreader you use. Personal
taste. Tim could quite happily continue to use strn if it's available
for Linux or is available as source. Or he could use tin, nn, slrn,
knews or any number of other news clients.

when I'm puzzled about this sort of thing, I try using 'strace' to see
what files are actually opened - sometimes that shows a problem with
stray environment variables. (But loading resources with xrdb masks
the ~/.Xdefaults file).

Ya you will probably have to re-install Winblows after such an upgrade.
Linux might be ok though if you are using the same harddrive. You might
have to get a new X server for your new graphics card.

For such a system, I'd recommend the Slackware distribution of Linux. Its
installation requirements are *tiny*. Just remember to run `swapon` before
`setup` but after you've defined yourself a swap partition.
I can't really comment WRT the *-BSD OSes, though, I get the impression
that they'd struggle a bit with the small amount of RAM you've got.

Not strictly true. You can quite happily do a `tar -zcv /dev/fd0 *` and
archive your directory to a floppy without mounting that floppy. However,
the entire disk will be taken up by this operation. It can be a bit more
convenient to do this sort of thing if you're just transferring a few
files from (non-networked) machine to machine.
> In redhat you can usually mount with
Works with just about any Linux. However, you'll need to make sure that
the directory you're specifying appears in /etc/fstab (otherwise you'll
have to quote the full syntax `mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy`,
assuming it's a DOS/Win9x format floppy of course).

Also not strictly true. To make sure that your data is actually written
to the disk, rather than waiting around, you can use `sync` to flush the
the data to disk without having to unmount the drive.

Subject: Re: SVGAText
Date: Sun, 25 Jul 1999 22:26:15 GMT
Hello,
I played with it the whole time, and I got SVGAText "half" working.
Still some sync times are not correct, but I cannot see where the
mistake is.
Tryed it last with a modeline of:
# "T80x64x8" 63.26 640 720 800 808 1024 1024 1040 1101
font 8x16 # 71Hz/78.29KHz.
Problem: Everything is readable, but characters appear twice at the end
of the line. Seems the monitor syncs a bit too late, but I couldn't
figure out how to change that. The real problem is that my graphics card
only is capable of a pixel clock of 70MHz in Text mode. With 135MHz
everything could be easy, I just would copy the working modeline from
the XF86Config file.
Enough for today. We'll see again...

These are all very good questions that I have not found the answer to --
except, of course, for doning my own research. I've learned to work
backwards from the DTD spec files to find out what the hell sgmltools
wants from a document type.
Docbook is the semi-official DTD (derived from what?) sponsored in part
by O'Reilly & Assoc. It's a more muscular DTD than Linuxdox, and is
designed to be a general-purpose format for creating any kind of report,
book, whitepaper or technical documentation. The DTD look more
complete, and so may side-step some of the weirdisms in the Linuxdoc
DTDs.
The only docs I've seen for SGML-Tools is what is on the abandoned
web-site -- very slim. I've learned more grabbing the raw SGML source
of the exisitng HOWTOs. I also had to backrev to an older version of
SGML-Tools because my current SGML source did not work under Jade.
You will get better answers to this on comp.text.sgml, I think.
