I don't use desktop environments, but IIRC that means that a program
crashed and left a core file. Delete it, unless you want to try to debug
the program. You can configure your shell to eliminate cores if you want.

We are trying to tell you that you can boot up Linux and expect it to run
for as long as you can keep the hardware going regardless of how many times
you do or do not log in and/or out. There should be nothing startling
about that: it's one of the things that any decent OS should do.

Is that sufficiently unambiguous?

You might try:
  rpm --rebuilddb

This might clear up some problems in rpm's database. This is a guess,
I have not had the error message you are reporting.

Hello David and Jose
I have the same problem with Xircom CardBus Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 Network
/ Modem card.
I am using it with HP Onibook 900B.
This hardware runs perfectly onWin NT 4.1 workstation as well as Windows 98.
It uses tulip_cb, serial_cb and cb_enabler modules.
Computer hangs during bootup or card insertion, 1-2 seconds after beep.

Please help.

Best regards.

Marcin.

Ryan,

I too am running Red Hat 6.1. If you have the settings right in
printtool, and it's on the printer port (not USB), then just add the
following to your /etc/conf.modules file, then reboot Linux. It should
work.

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc

Good luck! Let me know how it works.

 Hi all,

Does anyone know of a program for linux that can create doc files for
that palm? I have one on windows
called bigdoc, but it would be really usefull to have one for linux.

Also is there a utility for unix that can read palm .pdb and/or .prc
files. I usr pilot-link for everything else
but it doesn't seem to have this functionality.

Thanks for any help. If possible I'd appreciate if any answers could be
cc'd to my email below.

 Thanks,

If you're SURE that's a correct e-mail, try forwarding any remaining
evidence to the folks at Yahoo.

FWIW, http://www.securityfocus.com has some messages that may
be relevant; search for 'tornkit'. A message dated 26-Sep-2000
notes a URL

http://packetstorm.securify.com/UNIX/penetration/rootkits/tk.tgz

if you're not sure that you found everything (NOTE: You *can't*
be sure you've found everything in the event that Tornkit wasn't
the only thing used). At the very least, you may want the
README. Dunno if that's the latest version.

Oops. Guess they didn't trojan the shell's filename completion.
Maybe next version. *snort*

Don't forget to check /dev for any unusual entries.

Well, consider reinstalling, unless you have a secure way of checking
the integrity of the rest of your system.

Did this modem work under a previous Linux distribution (or RH version)? If
this is the first time you are trying to get it to work under Linux, you
should verify that what you have is not a Winmodem (see
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html for a list). I suspect that your
modem might be, and if it is you might be out of luck. Finding this out
first will save you alot of wasted effort (trust me!).

Subject: Re: wu-ftp more setup
Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2000 13:21:58 -0700

Figured it out! Having "ls" not work is the most common FAQ of all time for
wu-ftpd according to the GUEST HOWTO at www.wu-ftpd.org. Check it out -
there are some operating system anomolies that need to be applied.

In particular, for Redhat you need to do the following after installation
and after creating the /home/ftp folder and its subfolder structure,
(clipped from the GUEST HOWTO):

LINUX REDHAT 6.1: (reported by Steven Schramm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>)
I found the following steps for the lib directory critical to mysuccess:
    - create the lib directory with mode 111
    - cd lib
    - cp /lib/ld-2.1.1.so .
    - cp /lib/libc-2.1.1.so .
    - ln -s ld-2.1.1.so ld-linux.so.2
    - ln -s libc-2.1.1.so libc.so.6
    - chmod 111 ld-2.1.1.so
    - chmod 555 libc-2.1.1.so

The intriguing thing is that I have another Redhat installation where wu-ftp
was installed by default during the Redhat 6.0 "Server Installation" and it
doesn't have the same size files or the same permissions as shown above, yet
it works fine! Weird, but now both my systems work good.

Good luck,
Micer

Doing the chmod changes permissions, alright:

[rj@localhost rj]$ ls -l /usr/X11R6/bin/xosview
-rwsr-sr-x 1 root root 87272 Mar 22 1999
/usr/X11R6/bin/xosview

but the serial stat is still not displayed. Perhaps a few dozen
additional times through man page and README files will yield some sudden
inspiration. If not, it will not be the end of the world.

Why are you stymied by this? A missing rule error either means the rule
isn't there or the file in which the rule would be found isn't
there. Which is it? You don't tell us. But it sounds like you don't
have the kernel sources installed (or haven't configured them), and
the missing rule comes from there.

Let us know when you feel like giving us sufficient info to help you.
The command line and the error output it evokes should be fine.

10 minutes grace would be nice, that way I can stop processes cleanly

Had exactly the same problem last week, I got the update for
RH6.2 from an ftp site and dir rpm --frephen rpm.n.n.rpm
and it solved the problem.

I'd be tempted to get a dos boot disk that'll go onto the network
and put FTP on the boot disk, and take it from there.

Those look pretty equal to me! Strace the system call sequences instead
and see where they diverge. I would bet that something like what I
suggested is happening: the symbols have moved to different libraries
and either the linker is being diverted down the wrong load path by
overlapping symbols, or they're just plain dynamically opening the
wrong library.

Lots. Why not go to the linux palm archive sites! Search for them on
the net. You will need the pilot-utilities package, and then a front end of
your choosing (I use jpilot; just getting and installing it should
be enough of a lead for you).

I'd disagree, actually. NT is multi-luser, it's just that changing between
luser identities is such a PITA that *no-one* ever does it; at best they
add themselves to every system group they think they'll need, at worst they
just run as Administrator.

On linux you can make the system effectively single-user, by olcnffvat gur
abezny vavg naq trggl & ybtva cebprffrf naq fgnegvat lbhe cebprffrf
frcnengryl sebz gura bajneqf, but you'd be a prize moron for bothering.

Subject: shaper set up...

I would like to set up the traffic shaper, but I am not sure. The
(meger) documentation says that if the shaper is used, you cannot take
the real device down before the shaper device and a little
experimentation has shown that the real device needs to be up before the
shaper device. I believe that I can add an if-post script to fire up
the shaper at startup, but there is no if-pre for shutdown.

I am not sure how to proceed -- has anyone actually set this up? If so,
are there example scripts I can look at?

Go to http://freshmeat.net and search for "imap." This package
supports virtually all available mail protocols, not merely imap.
