I have just finished reading Open Sources, a very interesting and
informative book edited by DiBona, Ockman, and Stone and published by
O'Reilly. I will give it to the first person who sends me their address.

Then that's what they should do (or allow the option of doing as
part of the install). Although, I would say the glibc problem is one
that shouldn't (in my opinion) be happening - smacks of someone
not thinking through the results of their actions...

The answer could depend on what printer you are using.

I have an HP 5MP laser printer, and I have to select
`postscript printer' as the filter. Your choice or lack
of choice of filter may have something to do with your
problem.

Would you prefer to have some binary that doesn't work on your system, say
because it was compiled for libc5, or built with egcs on a system whose
glibc exports __register_frame_info, or built for glibc-2.1?

Look for an RPM called something like "X development".

Yes, but these days the convention for repackagers is to split up the
development from the runtime parts.

I'm not sure it this will help but there is a 2.7 gcc c++ (??) package
included and a note on another package to include if you want to use the
2.7?? package as your default compiler.

So I think it's there you just use YaST to uninstall (think) egcs and
install the other two packages.

I think egcs is the default c++ compiler in a stock install. As you know you
can't yet compiler the kernel with it AFAIK.

Sure, yours included. There's usually more than one way to
do it. I posted a perl solution, which works as a more general
solution. As to your comment that I posted an "advertisement"
for learning perl, I really don't know what to make of that.

It was just a general solution. If you do know some perl,
and run into the problem of having to rename a set of files
more than once, then it works pretty well. I find myself
renaming files (mostly that come from a dos filesystem)
fairly regularly. Uppercase to lower case. *.htm to *.html.
*.cpp to *.cc. Etc. It saves me time when I do. YMMV.

complexity were given. I don't see the problem.

1) don't bother mounting floppies. for unix-unix file transfer, use
tar to write to them like a tape. for linux-dos, use mtools. fyi
mtools can access your V?FAT partitions too.

2) you can set options in /etc/fstab to let random luser mount the
cdrom. in my experience, it's not the typing of mount/umount, it's
the hassle of becoming root to do it that's annoying. perhaps
   mtools works with cdroms too?

Subject: 2 Questions about elm and wtmp
Date: Tue, 27 Jul 1999 16:47:45 -0400

I have 2 distinct questions about elm and wtmp on a Redhat6.0 system.

Elm:
How can I set up elm (or Redhat for that matter) to send out with a
different email address. For example it currently sends out as
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ... I want it to be [EMAIL PROTECTED] so that
when I send email to people that can not see what server I am actually
coming from. Any ideas?? I know how to change the reply-to but that really
doesn't do what I want it too.

wtmp:
Does anyone know of a good cron job to clear out the wtmp file?? I have
tried jsut erasing it, but then at login it doesn't re-create it, it just
sends a message that logging for this login will not be taken because the
wtmp file does not exist (or something like that).

Thanks for the help or any pointers in the right direction to settle these
issues.

Well, I think that the problem could be the mainboard. What kind of mainboard
do you have? Are there any other known crashes (e. g. compiling a kernel with
option -j)? Test your mainboard (including Ram-chips), maybe it's broken.

Hi Mark,

you wrote:
> Jul 26 10:29:04 doppler kernel: 142.158.3.1 sent an invalid ICMP error
> to a broadcast.

This messages does occour if you receive a ICMP error message to an
packet that was orginated to a broadcast address. The source does tell
us:

    /*
     * Check the other end isnt violating RFC 1122. Some routers send
     * bogus responses to broadcast frames. If you see this message
     * first check your netmask matches at both ends, if it does then
     * get the other vendor to fix their kit.
     */

So above especially does speak about the case where you have given a
directed broadcast address as destination but the router does not know
this is a broadcast since it does have another netmask. As it seems this
router is directly connected to your network this might be easily
possible.

If you fear the ICMP messages did came from somewhere else you should
install access lists on the router filtering out packets with bogus
source- and/or destination-adresses (called spoofing; e.g. packets
coming in from 206.248.112.72 on the outsided interface).

> The error occurs frequently, every 5 minutes or so, whether I am doing
> anything or not. Can somebody please tell me: 1. what is causing the

Wether you are doing something or not is not related. It is only of
interest if your machine does send out packets to an address it thinks
to be an broadcast or not. Programs sending such packets on a regular
schedule are e.g.: SAMBA and timed.

1) after running updatedb is the computer crashing;
2) after rebuiding and compiling the kernel in an completely exact way (like

and I cannot start the new kernel.
Under Red Hat 5.0 and 5.2 the new kernel started without any problem.
Who can help me for resolving this two problems? Thank in advance.

You will need to setup the xntp package to do this. You will need to
synchronise the Linux machine with an accurate clock, with an internet
connection you can set xntp to use a time server on the net (your
friendly ISP may have such a machine).

Alternatively you can get a time source for your own machine - such as a
GPS receiver or other 'radio controlled' clock. IIRC there is
information on how to do this in the xntp documentation.

xntp is available on Rufus (http://rufus.w3.org/linux/RPM/) for rpm
distributions.

Time clients for windows (assuming that was your intention) are
available on Tucows or other shareware sites. If you were using other
Linux boxes, then you just set xntp to use the first machine as a time
server.

You can restrict the ammount of memory (and other things) used by a

edlin

or, more specifically,

c:\winnt\system32\edlin.exe

My Redhat 6.0 does indeed have this problem. I'm using kernel 2.2.10
and I get the loud blast of white noise in about one in five boots.
Hopefully the fix you guys came up with will work for me as well; my
girlfriend has been bugging me to fix it for quite a while now. :)

LaTeX *comes* with every Linux distributation at no extra charge.
So does a selection of text editors that will work just fine on a
'text-only dumb terminal'. This includes a non-X11 version of GnuEmacs.
Other editors that work well in the land of 'text-only dumb terminals':
pico and vi.

Any advice or experiences on setting up APM on a laptop would
be appreciated. I'm working through this now (with RH 5.2 and a Dell
Latitude) with the APM and Kernel HOWTOs, but I've never rebuilt
a kernel.

Yes, I noticed that g++ was missing from SuSE 6.0, but I didn't have
the other problems. I linked g++ to gcc which seemed to do the trick,
I suppose gcc reads what command it was called with and works out
whether you want to compile C or C++.
