With pam. See the docs under /usr/doc/pam-0.72/

You will need to add a line to some files under /etc/pam.d/ and will
then need to configure /etc/security/limits.conf

<<how does a user easily digests 'MS documents' without having
  a MS machine on his/her desk ?? >>

Has anyone found << THE OPTIMAL WAY >> to handle Microsoft's Office
emailed documents (mostly Word & Excel) while in Linux
(or other UNIX platforms) ??

We have tried a number of things over time
(such as StarOffice, Applixware and alike, etc, etc.)
... but nothing has really done the trick. (like using a MAC)

We are looking for a <<NATIVE>> (or quasi-native) solution.
For example something that feels at least like when
using a MAC with a browser, which in turn passes the document
to MS word or Excel.

I guess what I am asking is somothing like
opening an X window (from Linux) onto a MS windows environment
and being able to have such an eviroment digest the document.
OR being able to transparently ship the document to a MS environment,
etc.

Yes, it would be OK to have some additional dedicated hardware
(server) that runs MS windows. This is still a lot better then
forcing a lot of people to put MS windows on their desk because
they need to digest few MS documents.

Any pointers appreciated.

Please keep your comments brieft, complex or expensive solutions are
acceptable, as long as they produce 'quality' results.
I'll be happy to summarize back to the list, if interesting results
are found.

FWIW I have the same trouble in RH. Linuxconf won't appear in X no
matter what I do, root or ordinary user. I start X from the command
line, not at boot time. I always thought it must be some permissions
thing, but I can't find anything to change.

I'll be waiting to see if somebody has a solution for us!

Subject: Backup Problem ???
Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 15:30:42 GMT

Hi,

Is it possible for me to using the zip command to backup my data
automatically everynight ?

If not , it there any other command can do ???

I want to have a seperate backup file for each date.

*** Note : I want to backup all the data under the
directory /home/abcde .

The output filename i want to have for my zip file will be base on the
date i backup

eg. Today is 7/20/2000, the zip file for my backup data should be
07202000.zip, then tomorrow the filename for my backup file will be
07212000.zip.

I want my computer to do the backup process automatically everyday.

I am currently using the 'at' command to do some other job regularly
but the problem right now for me is i cannot backup my data by leting
the system to create differnt name

The system is always create the same name for the zip file and it will
overwrite the old one if i using the ' at ' command.

Can someone help me to solve this problem ???
Please teach me !

Thank you.

Hi, I recently posted about my machine running slowly, thrashing, and
generally bugging out , and one thing I was told was check my HD and
what I got from hdparm -tT, I was told I should get 140+/10+. I get on average
70+/14+ even with no other processes running. I have a maxtor 10GB HD,
5400rpm not sure about DMA and all that but I can find out im sure, its
only 1yr old. Is there any online documentation for good hdparm tuning, or
does anyone have any suggestions, I have read the man pages etc, but still
find it a little confusing.

thanks in advance Max.

You're talking about virtual terminal "text mode", right? (Xterms are
a different matter.) Install SVGATextMode, it does what you want.

Yep, common problem. Easiest solution comes from this company called
"Mandrake"--they sell a nice boxed set (the ultimate Windows Service
Pack) that has a penguin on the front. Get that boxed set, then boot
from the first CD and follow the on-screen instructions. You'll never
have any problems with Windows again!

(Free clue: Take a look at the name of the newsgroup you posted to,
and think before you post next time.)

zip? Is he a friend of _Zippy the Pinhead_? Use tar.

Use the --listed-incremental option with tar. See ``man tar''.

Use a shell script with cron. See ``man cron''. Buy yourself a book on
UNIX/Linux for more info.

This is usually set at boot time. If you want 80x43, you can edit
/etc/lilo.conf so it has the line "vga=5" somewhere before the first
image= line. Re-run lilo, reboot. SVGAtextmode has been unmaintained
for a long time and the last time I tried to use it, it f***ed up the
virtual consoles something terrible. If you wish to see the other
modes, put "vga=ask" in /etc/lilo.conf instead. If you want even more
options, compile your kernel with framebuffer support and read
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb/vesafb.txt .

What the f**k are <<THESE>> for? Worried I'll skip some words? Native?
You want an email client where you can click on an attachment icon and
it'll open, <<drumroll please>>, a word-like application, right? Try
netscape properly configured. Go to NS Edit/Prefs. and setup the
helper applications. <<This is what you want.>>

Not "zip" per se, but "tar" can do the right thing.

You should get a good book on Unix and/or Linux general usage. _Running
Linux_ (part of the O'Reilly stable of computer books) addresses
questions like this, and indeed every book on Unix basics should cover
this.

Run the following from cron ("man crontab") every night at about 1 am or
so:
tar czf `date "+%d%m%Y"`.tar.gz /home/abcde

I'm assuming you're in a networked environment. Put a Windows box
on the network and install VNC on it. Install VNC clients
on the Linux boxes. Use Samba or FTP to transfer files.

With Pentium crushing dual G4 machines like Apple will soon be releasing
(in August, I believe), there may well be a few Linux people become Mac
owners. Running Linux on PPC, of course.

Well, *maybe* if they run linux most of the time. Maybe. But why bother?
There's more and better hardware support on i386. Macs cost more for the
same performance that can be had for less with Alpha, Intel, AMD, etc.
Therefore: mac owner=kook with a "*dreamy* blueberry" computer case. Oh,

Since "Pentium [is] crushing dual G4 machines", I would think that no
one would be buying an apple. And, don't you think people can locate
the Apple Computer Corporatation, Inc. (Tool of Evil) site themselves?
But seriously, they could buy one of those PPC boxes from IBM, right?
But, then they wouldn't get that cooool logo and creamy dream vanilla

It's easy (or so I've read) to run MacOS apps under Linux on a
Mac. That gives Linux/Mac users access to some pretty decent
