I am going to set up a mailserver using sendmail of redhat 6.1.
I just have a host name within an already exising domain. For example
"domain.com" and I just only have a registered hostname
"host.domain.com".
I want to use "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" as email address.
of course, the domain has its own mail server, it isnot this linux box
and located in other place, you can also use [EMAIL PROTECTED] as email
address.
Problems are:
(1) Do i have to let the DNS server to create a MX record for my linux
mail server? What should the DNS do for my email server?
(2) I use linuxconf to config it as follow:
present your system as : host.domain.com
uncheck "accept email for "
mailserver: host.domain.com
mail gateway: some other smtp mail server
mail gateway protocol : smtp.
features, misci alaises: just leave them alone.
but I couldn't send or receive mail at all.
/var/log/maillog reads
"... my unqualifed host name (host) unknown, sleeping for
retry"
".. unable to qualify my own domain name (host) -- using short
name "
any clue? Thanks for help.

First I'd like to start with a rant-
You might consider upgrading to XFree86 4.0. I never expected the
performance upgrade I saw when I installed XFree4.0. It is more than
*notacibly* faster. I just checked the card support and it will support
"S3 Trio 32 (generic)". Just a thought-

I have an ATI Rage Fury 2x AGP 3D, and when installing
RH6.2 all the graphic interactive installation process
turned a mess of windows and fonts when configuring
the videocard, never understood why, i tried
picking any compatible ATI Rage 128 and was always
the same...my solution was getting a AX server
'borrowed' from a friend...if somebody has found the
solution for this, please let me know.
Thank you...

There aren't. You can do anything in Linux, as long as you're prepared
to accept that you have to do it differently, in some cases.
If you are willing to pay for stuff, then you can get things more similar
to Windows programs. Otherwise (like me), just get used to the alternatives.
Many alternatives are still in beta/yet reached version 1, but are still more
stable than Windows.
Of course, Linux may be missing support for certain hardware, but just
don't _buy_ that hardware. A Windows user wouldn't buy hardware that isn't
supported in Windows, a Linux user wouldn't buy hardware that isn't
supported in Linux.
The problem comes when people switch. The answer is simply to buy
the right hardware; if you were willing to pay for Windows (whether
directly or indirectly), then you should be willing to pay for more
compatible hardware. I did.

Which modem? I have a (3com) USR with this feature, and use a program
called kmsgmodem for this purpose. There's also another program called
mepl (search for both at freshmeat.net).

bash has a distinction between 'shell variables' and 'the environment';
shell variables must be explicitly exported (hence the export command) before
they appear in the environment; environment variables are all mirrored
to shell variables.
Use 'set' to see them all.

Subject: Problem: mgetty writing faxes with wide margins
Date: 17 Apr 2000 16:41:01 GMT
I recently installed mgetty-sendfax 1.1.14 (the one that came with Redhat
6.0) and got incoming data and fax calls via my USR Courier Sportster
56k working with absolutely no trouble, save one. When a fax is converted
into Postscript and either printed or viewed, the result is that the fax
has been scaled down to fit on a page with two-inch margins all around; in
other words, the fax is about 4.5x7 inches on an 8.5x11 page.
Here is an example of how a fax -- the last one I received -- was
received and converted. First, the information about the fax that mgetty
emailed me:
Communication parameters: +FCS:0,5,0,2,0,0,0,0
Resolution : normal
Bit Rate : 14400
Page Width : 1728 pixels
Page Length: unlimited
Compression: 0 (1d mod Huffman)
Error Corr.: none
Scan Time : 0
Then the conversion from g3 into Postscript:
foreach i (fn8f90c92S0-_-+0000000000_.0[1-4])
g32pbm $i | pbmtops > $i.ps
endif
(This is g32pbm written by Gert Doering that came with mgetty-sendfax.)
The resulting pages each had approximately a two-inch border, and the fax
had been scaled down accordingly when viewed with ghostscript or printed
to the Postscript laser printer.
Just to rule out the possibility of a screwy fax machine on the sending
end, I tried a test fax from work, from a fax machine that I know works
fine, and the same thing happened -- two inch border around everything.
And if it matters, the modem is configured by mgetty as follows:
04/15 20:44:31 yS0 USR Courier/Sportster 56k detected
04/15 20:44:31 yS0 mdm_send: 'ATI3'
04/15 20:44:31 yS0 additional info: 'U.S. Robotics 56K FAX EXT V5.1.4'
04/15 20:44:31 yS0 mdm_send: 'AT+FCLASS=2.0' -> OK
04/15 20:44:32 yS0 mdm_send: 'AT+FAA=0;+FCR=1' -> OK
04/15 20:44:32 yS0 mdm_send: 'AT+FBO=1' -> OK
04/15 20:44:32 yS0 mdm_send: 'AT+FNR=1,1,1,0' -> OK
04/15 20:44:32 yS0 mdm_send: 'AT+FLI="<my fax number>"' -> OK
04/15 20:44:32 yS0 mdm_send: 'AT+FCC=1,5,0,2,0,0,0,0' -> OK
The mgetty configuration regarding faxes is pretty much the one out of
the box, except, of course, that tty devices, phone numbers, and fax
headers have been changed.
Anyone have any ideas why this is happening? Is it a problem with mgetty
and/or its configuration? Is it the conversion process described above?
Thanks!

This oughta make you a happy camper:
http://www.linux-mag.com/2000-01/desktop_01.html
You can also start your X session manually in the following way:
For KDE, type xinit /usr/bin/startkde
For Gnome, type xinit /usr/bin/gnome-session

IIRC, /var/run/utmp is a file which keeps track of who's logged in.
Do:
touch /var/run/utmp
as root to create; then it should be maintained.
