There is none. The Real format is proprietary and, according to rumors,
new versions of the software will not be available to users of
non-mainstream operating systems. Do not use that format and tell anyone
who uses it that they should use one of the free and technically
superior formats. There's nothing that RealAudio/Video can do that's not
possible with other file formats.

easier way to do this is with a call to the system, in which case it's
linux.
for this function you will need to include stdlib.h
try
system( "clear" );
this will do the same thing without the help of proprietary software ;)

If you are a teacher it is not your job to make things simple for your
students so they do not need to know what the world is like. You need
to teach them that they must tell the linker to link the math library if
they are using floating point math.
One of your students may get a job using c and be in a unix
group and not know how to use math functions. His employer will think
he has not been properly trained.
I think linux would not be doing anyone a favor by making linux
incompatible with other unix systems. Every program in the c library is
called by some other program in the c library. So the c library is the
minimum search for the loader. No program in the c library calls a
floating point math program, so it is reasonable to expect someone who
wants to use a math library routine to tell the linker about it.

If you are using Red Hat 6.0 and want it to start when you boot.
You might try using linuxconf and follow the tree down as listed below:
config
networking
client tasks
routing and gateways
PPP/SLIP/PLIP
click on PPP/SLIP/PLIP and then configurations PPP0
then on networking and then the activate interface at boot time
OR you could just go to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0
and edit where it says :
ONBOOT=no change to ONBOOT=yes
then reboot this should start your ppp0 connection at boot up.
OR if you want to be able to start ppp as a user try entering
usernet at an xterm prompt and click on the ppp0 square.
Sorry NO Guarantee!
But it's Free! ;~)

Set the LESSCHARSET environment variable
(e.g., `export LESSCHARSET=latin1' in bash).

Let's try a shot into the dark ...
export LESSCHARSET=latin1
... and use groff with -Tlatin1. How to set that as the default
depends on you man binary, but give it a try first.

The same sort of thinking that preserved gets() into C9X. Oh, joy.

I'm sure the thousandth of a second spent searching another 50 entries in
the library's table of contents would utterly bring UNIX to its knees.

The XF86Config file, usually found in /etc/X11/, has all the settings for
your display. If you are using the "svga" driver, then find the Modes line
in the Screen section:
...
Section "Screen"
Driver "svga"
...
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" ...
...
If you only see one mode, you'll only get one size.

either, (even though it works fine on my Debian Linux Installation on

I tried 'modprobe ppa' as G-man suggests. The computer responds with.
/lib/modules/2.2.5-15/scsi/ppa.0: init_module: Device or Resource Busy
This is the same output I get if I use 'insmod parport' then 'insmod ppa'
I've poured over all the documentation I can find, this one is a mystery to

Subject: Unusually complex/exotic lpr, lpd, printcap games & fun...
Date: Sat, 31 Jul 1999 02:36:29 GMT
First of all I am quite familure with RedHat's printtool and the 'magic
filter' games. I have a Cannon BJ330 printer. This is a *wide
carriage* pin-feed (I have a sheet feeder also) ink-jet printer. I have
it running in Epson emulation mode. It behaves like a 24-pin Epson
printer. I have everything setup and working fine with GS 5.10 (under
RH 5.2). There are some special things *I* want to do, however, and I
am not sure how to do them.
I do two *main* kinds of printing (at present): PostScript on normal
letter sized paper (8.5x11) and non PostScript printing on wide pin-feed
(continuous) paper (I presently have some paper that is 14+" wide, by
8.5" between perfs. -- yes, 'short' pages, but you get 68 lines/page at
8 lpi (the printer has an '8 lines per inch' mode). At present the
normal setup works just fine. I manually switch the printer's feed
source and manually 'sync' what I print with how the printer is set up.
The normal print filter includes the option '-papersize=LETTER' on the
gs command line, which at present is ok, BUT I want to do some special
things:
I'd like to print on 'strange' sized paper sometimes. I am not sure if
I should edit /usr/share/ghostscript/5.10/gs_statd.ps or if there is a
better way to deal with strange sizes.
I'd like to have filters in place for several different paper sizes at
the same time (randomly editing or having way too much fun with mv/ln
is something I'd like to avoid), and somehow specify on the lpr command
which filter / filter options to use. I'm thinking: I could set up
several queues all feeding the same device, but I am not sure if that
will create a mess (lock and queue management nastiness). Is lpr/lpd
too dumb to handle this sort of reality or is there a 'smart' lpr/lpd
replacement available? I could probably create a 'smart' lpr/lpd
package that supported the extra options -- would anybody else even be
interested in such a beast? Note: there might not be any way to tell
*from the tile itself* what options it would want (although peeking for
%%PageSize or %%DocumentMedia, etc. options might be possible, these
might not be there or be meaningful sometimes).

One has to be considerably older than 40 to have grown up in a generation
for which computers did not exist. Programming courses were commonplace
when I was in college in the sixties.

I used an IBM 1620 with Fortran as my "virgin" computer experience. I went
on to learn to use Unix: so can Windows users. I did use Windows for a
project for a few months a few years ago. An unpleasant experience.

They can learn.

And there are a lot of 50 year old's that have such a head start that the 8
year old's will never catch up.

You could learn if you really wanted to. I was about your age when I first
came in contact with Unix.

Some of us doddering oldsters will have a bit to do with it as well.

Shit, I just checked this out and you're absolutely right, it DID toss me
into the 5.0 pile. It seems to have removed the 2.0/2.2 choice... BUT
the link that I saved with all the details sends me to the G2 download
page. I've changed my name and email on this URL, so you might want to
edit the NOBODY etc. stuff to match your own particulars...

Subject: Help with shutdown script
I'm trying to make a shudown script that will halt the system from
within x windows. What I'm trying to do is open up an xterm to prompt
for the root password and once the password's typed in will shut down
the system. Somthing like:
xterm -e su # open xterm with pass prompt
after password is given, while xterm open, execute
/sbin/shutdown -h now
done
Does anyone know how I can write this? I tried:
#!/bin/sh
while [ 'xterm -e su' ]; do
/sbin/shutdown -h now;
done
But that didn't work too well.
Thanks,
Warren Bell
