Too bad it isn't that easy. Perhaps I should have been more specific:
It's actually a ca. 712MB image of an audio-cd. That's my problem.
cdrecord/cdrdao won't write a file that big to cd. I can't even mount
that file to test whether it is a valid image (because of no iso-fs)
And I guess writing it directly to /dev/sgX won't work ;-)

I did that before posting here. Of course ;-)

Hi,

i have a win98 partition (10GB) and a linux partition (4GB), but when i
set the linux partition to "active" in PartitionMagic and reboot, my
computer says: "missing operating system. Powerquest has been no help,
so i hope you can help me.

below is my most recent correspondence with powerquest support, where
they suggested i delete my old win98 "Extended" partition using the
pqmagic /ipe command to bypass the error message (#108):

Please help.
---
your suggestion to use PQMAGIC /IPE to "get in" worked.

I then deleted the ExtendedX partition (my win98 D:-drive). I then
installed Corel
Linux to "free disk space" (which it listed as 4GB, which is the size of
the partition you told me to delete). It then "formatted" the partition
and installed itself without any error messages.

Unfortunately, when i rebooted at the end of the installation, it said
"missing
operating system", even though I had defined the Linux partition as
"aktive partition". It seems that there is still something wrong with
the patitions on my hard drive.

Do i have to repartition my win32 partition (i'd rather not, since it
has MANY
installed/configured programs - 10GB)? Would that even do the job?

What should i do?

Here is the NEW printout from "partinfo.exe":

See /usr/src/linux/.version Maybe it keeps track of how many times you
have reconfigured or compiled the kernel. The file date matches that
shown in uname. Mine is #14, I guess I was trying some different things.

I'm looking for a good database for my linux webserver. I really do not
want to use Oracle because of the high price. But I would like something
that I can use that will also work with the ColfFusion software that is

I'm currently using a NT server with Microsoft Access but I would like to

for linux would be helpful.... Thanks for your help and time

So far, I've read this same post -- posted separately -- in at least
four newsgroups. In the future, please:

- Post to no more than two or three newsgroups.
- Cross-post, don't multi-post. You can usually cross-post by listing
multiple newsgroups on a single "Newsgroups" line in your news reader.
Multi-posting, as you've done, wastes network resources (including
download time for people who read news offline and disk space on news
servers) and causes multiple threads of replies, many of them
  redundant.

I'd have sent this message by mail, but you've used an obvious anti-spam
address and given no e-mail reply address -- another no-no.

Don't know how much this helps but Netscape has a file called
Netscape.ad which has definitions for just about every aspect of the UI,
maybe you could disable most of the toolbar buttons and menus, leaving
just the bookmark menu without the add/file/edit options.

Linux ignores the "active" status of a partition. In most cases, Linux
boots by using LILO, the Linux Loader. Your Linux installation routine
should have installed LILO, either on the hard disk's MBR or on the
Linux partition's boot sector. If LILO is on the MBR, it should be what
comes up when you boot the system; you'll get a prompt (probably reading
"boot:"), at which you type the name of the OS you want to boot (or hit
Tab to see a list of possibilities). If LILO's on the Linux partition's
boot sector, then setting it active should work, or you can use a
utility like BootMagic to select which partition to boot. Chances are
you'll need a DOS partition with LOADLIN.EXE (which comes with all major
Linux distributions) and a copy of your Linux kernel to boot Linux,
whereupon you can re-install LILO. Type "LOADLIN VMLINUZ boot=/dev/hda5
ro" (you may need to change VMLINUZ, the name of the Linux kernel, and
/dev/hda5, the name of the Linux boot partition, for your system).

If this isn't any help, then please post more details, like what order
you installed the OSs in, whether Linux ever booted, whether you've
resized your Linux partition with PartitionMagic, etc. You might also
want to consult my book, _The Multi-Boot Configuration Handbook_
(http://www.rodsbooks.com/multiboot/), which covers these matters in
detail.

Be more specific about what you mean. If you compile and type the name of the program
that you
compiled and it doesn't run it can be that you forgot to say where it was.

For instance if your program is named tata.c
The object file will likely be tata.o
and the binary tata
so to run it you type :
./tata
unless you put it on a directory that is in the path

If you got errors during compile that is another issue. It is very important to
specify exactly
what the problem is in order to get a valid response to your problem.

Thanks Jai,
I've tried this and it does work! BUT, I can't figure out a way to
make it work with MBSE. I've tried putting the echo statement in
the .profile or .bashrc file, but it just gets echo'd to the screen,
and no translation is done.

I've had similar problem with SuSE. None of the recent versions of Netscape released
directly by netscape
are stable. The most stable version that you can get is usually the one released with
the distributions.
An exception would be the last releases for RedHat, SuSE and Mandrake.
As far as SuSE is concerned they released a stable version of Netscape on the web with
their updates
but unfortunately it's not the 128 bit version. If anyone know of a stable 128 bit
version somewhere for
SuSE 6.4 I'd love to know where it's at. No the mandrake version isn't it, it will not
install.
As far as enforce is concerned it will not install because the SuSE version is not
supported

Interesting, but incidentally the crontab was _empty_ at that time :-(
And, in fact, it was the middle of the night - 3 a.m., to be precise.
I guess the system was doing some garbage collection or something similar...
Unless of course I was just being hacked at this very moment without knowing
it (there was no one but me according to the "who" command, but the
informations used by "who" can be altered somewhere, I guess (/var/wtmp ?) ?

Get smpeg from www.lokigames.com > Development > SMPEG

note that you will need to compile it and that you will need SDL
(www.libsdl.org) to run it. Works pretty great.

Videos can be played either by command line with "plaympeg xoxoxoxo.mpg"
or with the GUI "gtv" (launch gtv from command line or add to your
manager's / GNOME's /KDE's (etc..) menu).

Which distro do you have? You need to install the
glibc[something]-devel.rpm, it provides the necessary header files.

telnet proprietary.lucent.server
login:
password:
export TERM=att4410 (bash, use "setenv TERM att4410" for csh)
(or)
export TERM=att605
?

Or alternatively, open an xterm like so:
xterm -ls -tn att4410
and the terminal type will be set automagically. HTH,

comp.os.lynx is a news group to discuss about the LynxOS real-time
operating system. I'll appreciate if you stop cross-posting this

cdrecord -v -dao -audio bigfile.cdr

cdrecord has no restrictions on the amount of data you can write to a
CD. It will stop writing when the device returns the equivalent of
ENOSPC, but that's it. The -audio option here is somewhat important, as
a CDDA sector is 2352 bytes while a data CD sector is 2048 bytes
(there's no error-correction information on an audio CD, so the sectors
can hold more data.)

Unfortunately, if the thing isn't separated into distinct tracks,
writing like this will make the entire CD one huge track. There should
be an option somewhere to tell cdrecord or cdrdao to insert track index
numbers at specific times, but the cdrecord man page didn't say *how*
one would do this. cdrdao probably has this option better-documented.

Sorry to see that. There is no need for proprietary and no doubt buggy
Linux "dialers". The way ISP's can best support Linux is to make the
relevant information available in a straightforward form so that the user
can easily set up ppp using one of the many available tools.

If ISP's feel that they must distribute "dialers" they should simply
distribute one of the existing free ppp packages.
