Subject: PPP from win95 by null cable ?
Date: 4 Nov 2000 11:13:31 GMT
Hi,
I need to connect Win95 machine to Linux using Null-Modem Cable.
Using Trumpet Winsock3.0D, I was able to manually login and
issued
"/usr/sbin/pppd 123.123.123.1:123.123.123.3 proxyarp"
Normally, when strange-looking characters print on screen,
I can go back to PC and start connection (by ESC).
But, this time pppd does not send any message to PC. I am lost here.
Is there other way around ?
Thank you in advance

How is the sound support in VMWare?
Is f.ex. Cool Edit Pro fully functional in VMWare? Multi-channel audio
out?
Any experience with professional audio work in VMWare?

I fit is always changing by the same 6 hours then this should correct
it.
To check to see if this could be the problem:
cat /etc/sysconfig/clock
This will show you the clock file. If this could be causing the problem
it will probably look like the one shown.
ZONE="US/Central"
UTC=true
ARC=false
It should look similar to this with the correct country and timezone in
the first line. The second line tells Linux to assume the BIOS clock is
set to the UTC or GMT timezone. If this is what yours looks like then
you should change the UTC line to correct it as shown below.
vi /etc/sysconfig/clock
UTC=false
Be sure to save the change when done then reset the correct time.
Hope this helps.

Hi all,
I'm looking for a small database to run on a Linux box. It should not be
a server, more like an API to a "textfile" (like for example MS Access
and ASP), and I'm planning to use it for simple webb apps. Ideally it
would be accessble using perl, PHP, java, shellscripts or some other
easy-to-use "language" with some simple functions and SQL
queriy-strings.
Please respond to my mail aswell, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thanks,

This works for me on a redhat 6.2 system ising a Lynksys LNE100-TX card.
Read carefully when entering the command since the line may get wrapped
in e-mail. Hope it helps.
To compile the module you will need to log in as "root", or "su" to
root.
You can download the latest version of the Tulip.c driver from one of
the links below, or copy it from the Linksys disk that came with the
ethernet card:
http://www.linksys.com/support/support.asp?spid=25
ftp://ftp.scydld.com/pub/network/tulip.c
Next you need to add a directory named "inet" to /usr/src/linux/net
with the following command:
mkdir /usr/src/linux/net/inet
Then copy the tulip.c module into the inet directory with this:
cp /path/to/tulip.c /usr/src/linux/net/inet/
First you remove the old module.
rm -f /lib/modules/kernel_version/net/tulip.o
In order to be able to compile the module you need to be in the inet
directory. This can be done with the following command.
cd /usr/src/linux/net/inet
Use one of the commands below depending on what is needed by your
system.
Be careful of typo errors, they will cause the compile to fail.
1.) To compile the Tulip module, issue the command below, it must all be
on one line:
gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet -Wall
-Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c tulip.c `[ -f
/usr/include/linux/modversions.h ] && echo -DMODVERSIONS`
2.) For a dual processor system, compile it with the command below, it
must all be on one line:
gcc -D__SMP__ -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet -Wall
-Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c tulip.c `[ -f
/usr/include/linux/modversions.h ] && echo -DMODVERSIONS`
Once compiled you need to install it as follows:
To install the new
cp tulip.o /lib/modules/kernel_version/net
You need to add the "tulip" module to /etc/conf.modules using the
correct device (eth0, eth1, etc...).
alias eth0 tulip
Now update the "modules.dep" file by issuing the following command:
depmod -a
>From this point most of the time all that is needed is to restart the
network for the new module to be activated. You can do this with the
following:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart
If you want to check it prior to restarting the network, you can issue
the command below and then check /var/log/messages for any errors.
modprobe tulip.o
The module is installed correctly, if no errors appear in the logs.
If you tested the install you need to unload it from the kernel with the
command and then restart the network:
rmmod tulip.o
Recompile Kernel Method
Log in as "root", or "su" to root.
You can download the latest version of the Tulip.c driver from one of
the links below, or copy it from the Linksys disk that came with the
ethernet card:
http://www.linksys.com/support/support.asp?spid=25
ftp://ftp.scydld.com/pub/network/tulip.c
Then remove the old tulip.c module by issuing the command below, it must
all be on one line:
rm -f /usr/src/linux/drivers/net/tulip.c
/usr/src/linux/drivers/net/tulip.old
And copy the new module into place.
cp tulip.c /usr/src/linux/drivers/net
>From here you will have to follow the directions to compile the kernel
on your system.

IIRC, debian packages are simple ar archives which you can unpack with
ar. They contain a couple of .tar.gz files which contain the binaries
and control information association with the packaging system
respectively.

I have a GX110 with the i810 video. In BIOS, you'll notice that you can
make the primary video "onboard" or "auto." Auto tries everything else
(PCI, duh) first. So, you cannot disable the onboard, so to speak. If you
set the primary video auto, you should be able to just run XFree86 3.x and
4.x off of the ATi Rage (I have a Rage-based card at home, and it is
supported in XF86 3.x and 4.x).
For XFree86 3.3.6 on the i810, you'll need to download some files from Intel
(I don't have the link in front of me.) For 4.x with the i810, you'll need
a 2.4 kernel with the agpgart module. I haven't been paying attention, but
Mandrake *may* have figured out a way to get XF4 to work with the i810 in a
2.2.x kernel. I'll have to try it out to verify.
I am running a GX110 with the i810 video (primary) and a Matrox Millenium
for dual-screen display at work with XFree86 4.x.

(It's not compressed). Use dpkg (install it first). Or use alien to
convert it to a tar or an rpm and install that (install alien first).
Or you can just unpack the two tars inside it using ar, and install
them using tar. Man ar and man tar for more info, but it should all
become very obvious after you run ar tv foo.deb.

If you want to create the CD all in one shot, leave the -nofix off. A
lot of audio CD players cannot play an unfixated disk. The -nofix
option is intended to let you create an audio CD in discrete steps (burn one
track with -nofix, play Quake for a while, burn another track with
-nofix, etc.) Once you've burned all the tracks, just do "cdrecord -fix
dev=X,Y,Z" and the audio Cd should play in any audio CD player. HTH,

Debian packages are simply ar(1) archives (same format as for static libraries,
except that there is no symbol table). Example:
% ar p bc_1.05a-11_i386.deb data.tar.gz | gzip -d | tar t
./
./usr/
./usr/bin/
./usr/bin/bc
./usr/share/
./usr/share/doc/
./usr/share/doc/bc/
./usr/share/doc/bc/NEWS
./usr/share/doc/bc/README
./usr/share/doc/bc/AUTHORS
./usr/share/doc/bc/copyright
./usr/share/doc/bc/examples/
./usr/share/doc/bc/examples/ckbook.b
./usr/share/doc/bc/examples/pi.b
./usr/share/doc/bc/examples/primes.b
./usr/share/doc/bc/examples/twins.b
./usr/share/doc/bc/changelog.gz
./usr/share/doc/bc/changelog.Debian.gz
./usr/share/man/
./usr/share/man/man1/
./usr/share/man/man1/bc.1.gz
./usr/lib/
./usr/lib/menu/
./usr/lib/menu/bc
IOW, bc_....deb contains data.tar.gz that holds the package contents.
To unpack it under /tmp/foo/bar
% ar p bc_1.05a-11_i386.deb data.tar.gz | gzip -d |(cd /tmp/foo/bar && tar x)
Package metadata (control, {pre, post}{install, remove} scripts) are
in another member of archive - control.tar.gz. In this case
% ar p bc_1.05a-11_i386.deb control.tar.gz | gzip -d | tar t
./
./postinst
./prerm
./postrm
./control
% ar p bc_1.05a-11_i386.deb control.tar.gz | gzip -d | tar xO ./control
Package: bc

I understand that the various inet protocols are public (international):
SMTP, NNTP,pop ...etc.
Some years back my ISP 'upgraded', and my old M$-W31 would no longer
connect. Rather than be FORCED to use W9x, I joined linux.

Suggest you check the error logs. Maybe named has some entries
explaining why it dies.
It sounds like your named runs ok for a while then dies unexpectedly.
A temporary work-around it to not start named via the standard Linux
method of an rc shell script. Instead, add an entry for it directly
in /etc/inittab and use the "respawn" option. This way, init will
automatically restart named any time it dies.
But, check the error log (/var/log/messages) first!

I too have this card, and never thought I'd use my primary box for linux on

Looks like I'll be making a trip down to the local PC store for a decent

You might look at:
a) <http://www.ntlug.org/~cbbrowne/rdbms.html>
which lists a Bunch Of SQL DBMSes. Probably mostly _unsuited_ to
your intended purpose; they're largely "server" applications.
b) <http://www.ntlug.org/~cbbrowne/nonrdbms.html>
which lists a bunch of what are largely "embedded" database systems.
Quite likely to offer some useful options...
By the way, "small", "using text files" tends to be contradictory to the
notion of using a "full scale SQL language." By the time they get around
to building a language parser, there's enough complexity that developers
of such tend to head on to building a full scale sophisticated DBMS.

I was curious how the /etc/localtime file interacted with the TZ
environment variable. "man 5 localtime" and "man zoneinfo" didn't
work. Where is this stuff documented?
