I'm running RH6.0
A while ago, I downloaded & compiled the 2.2.5-22 kernel. I replaced
vmlinuz & system.map, but I noticed in /boot that 2 files had names
still containing the original version - vmlinux-2.2.5-15 and
module-info-2.2.5-15. I just left them & everything has been working ok.
Now I'd like to get & compile 2.2.10-4. Where do vmlinux and module-info
come from? I'm worried that going from 2.2.5-x to 2.2.10-x might cause
some problems if these 2 aren't upgraded.

I'm trying to print a .pdf file from a newly downloaded and installed
Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0. I can view and print it from the KDE viewer,
but it looks kinda sloppy (it's a dental insurance claim form, of all
things) so I think neatness might count. I looks fine on the screen
with acroread, but when I click print, gs grinds for a while (as seen by
top), but nothing ever comes out. There is nothing in the print queue
after this is done. FWIW, I'm using SuSE 6.1 w/kernel 2.2.7, and the
printer is an Epson ActionLaser 1100 masquerading as an HP LaserJet 3,
with no built-in PostScript.

Hi...
I've just recompile my kernel to provide support for my ATAPI CDR using
scsi emulation mode, and since then, I haven't had any sound. I've run
sndconfig, and it says that the kernel is not compiled with modular
sound. But it is (i think) :)
Can anyone help me?

Yes. I've used bzImage, bzdisk and bzlilo with no problems. Seems to
act the same as the 'standard" zImage, zdisk and zlilo.

The terminology is different, but the system is roughly the same. When a
European says "social security" an American should hear "social security +
welfare + unemployment benefits". When an American says "social security"
an European should hear "old-age pension".

I've got an ACER 6x2x2x CDRW ATAPI and after recompiling my kernel for
scsi emulation, (like the README.ATAPI with xcdroast says) it worked no
worries... It's not the best drive (It was cheap!) but it goes..

If your screen is physically limited to 800x600 resolution, as mine is
(a 12"tft with 2mb vid ram), you can still do 1024x768 at 16 bit color
depth using X windows virtual scrollable resolution.
Here is my configuration file for X, and I will insert the line which
enables the virtual res. I'm running it with SuSE 6.1, so if you're not
using this distro, check the path statements, file location statements,
server name statements, etc. The actual resolution, dot clocks,
frequencies will all work correctly for you. I am running it on a Chips
& Tech 65554 but this server also works for the 65555 as well. If you
have less vid memory, you will need to run your box at lesser
resolutions, OR at lesser color depths.

Subject: Multiple displays in Linux?
Date: Mon, 9 Aug 1999 22:07:12 -0700
Is it possible to setup multiple (2 or more) video displays in Linux. I am
using 2 cards; 1 ATI All-in-Wonder Pro PCI, and 1 ATI Expert@Play AGP
driving a Viewsonic G773 and Viewsonic 17PS respectively (in Windows 98,
that is).
I've seen reference to Displayname and number in the Linux manual, but am at
a loss as to how and where this configuration is made. I am using RedHat 6.0
and the first of the 2 video setups is working fine.

modprobe bttv
modprobe tuner
Will do equally well.
Your modules should end up in /lib/modules/<version>/misc.

You might want to get the latest module source and upgrade.

Hey all,
This might be an FAQ. If so, then I apologize. However, I have been
unable to find it. I might be searching using the wrong keywords.....
I am interested in maintaining the same files and directory structure at
home as I do in my office. The medium for transfering data back and
forth is a zip (or jaz) disk. Currently, I have been tar-ing the files
at one location and untar-ing them at the other. This method seems to
be overkill when only a few files change during the day. Is there a
better (more efficient) way of doing this?
Thanks in advance.

Right. It calls open(). Which is a normal function in libc. Now, if you will
look at the body of that function you'll see the same code as in write(),
except that syscall number is 5. Indeed we have wrappers with the normal
C calling conventions, but they are outside of the kernel. If you prefer
to use the inlined versions you can have them - see example in this
thread (syscall.h and friends).

I there a way to take a vmlinuz file and find out what options or
drives are compiled into it. In other words can I take a kernel that
someone else made and run grep or something so that I could create
a .config file to make the same kernel.
Thanks for any help! Please email me if you know about something.

Subject: SuSE 6.1 kppp - instructions which worked for me!
Date: Mon, 09 Aug 1999 23:50:14 -0600
Here's how I configured my KPPP to work for Mindspring.com It does
also use PAP for authentication. Log on to your system as root. Start
x going. This is assuming that you're using KDE in SuSE 6.1, and that
you installed PPP support when installing the whole system.
In KDE click on the K button, go down to Internet, click, select
Kppp. The dialog box will come up, and you can type in your login ID.
Then click on Setup on the bottom row of buttons.
Onthe next dialog which pops up, select accounts. click on new.
On the next dialog box, which is DIAL, type in connection name, like
Netcom, next type in local phone number to dial, and for authenication
type, select PAP. You might also check off the store password option.
On my system, I left blank the other three boxes (not needed) and didn't
use any "Arguments".
Next tab - IP, selected Dynamic IP. Left the other check boxes
unchecked.
Next tab - DNS, typed in Mindspring.com Next, typed in the DNS IP
address into the DNS IP address box, then clicked ADD. Did this for
the second DNS Ip address for mindspring. I left the other check boxes
unchecked.
Next tab - Gateway, Default Gateway is checked and checkmark on assign
the default gateway route to this gateway.
Next tab - Login Script, didn't use. Mindspring ISP doesn't use any
scripts for login.
Next tab - Accounting - Left blank. I will know about what my usage
is, and it is unlimmited anyway.
Clicked OK
Select Device tab - Make sure /dev/modem is selected
I use a checkmark on Lock File. no other changes made.
Next tab - Modem, clicked on Query Modem, to make sure I got a response
to modem. This makes sure system can talk to modem.
Next tab - PPP check mark on show clock on caption
check mark on disconnect on X-server shutdown
check mark on minimize window on connect.
Click on OK
Typed password on main dialog box, and attempted to connect.
On my system, the first time I attempted to connect, it errored out. I
then closed Kppp, and immediately went to start menu and selected Kppp
again. This time it connected like a champ. Fired up the browser and
then set the correct parameters in the Netscape preferences.
On my system, every time I fire up X windows, the first attempt at using
Kppp errors out, but I then immediately close Kppp and fire it up
again. It works everytime after that, even all day long, hanging up and
then later reconnecting, as long as I don't shut down X. If I do, Kppp
will error out on the first attempt, again, but I then merely close it,
and click it again, and then it will work. If I leave the computer
booted and X running for days, Kppp will always work on the first time.
Everytime.
Now, if Netcom uses scripting for connecting, you will need to enter the
scripts. I didn't need to edit any configuration files of any kind or
anything like that. Merely entering the correct data in dialog boxes
automatically configures all the required config files. It's totally
transparent to the user. I went into some of the config files later and
examined them, and Kppp did all the work for me.
Hope it helps you out. Write back and let me know how it went.
