A possible alternative is to install a virtual machine under Linux, in
which to run your Windows.
I know of Win4lin (www.netraverse.com) which I have recently installed
and am impressed with, and VMWare which I have not used but which has
excellent reviews.
One advantage of the virtual machine is that Windows runs in its own
process space under Linux, so the typical Win crashes do not bring my PC
down - they just close the Linux Win window.
The main advantage to me is that I don't have to multi-boot. I now run
Linux as my 'native' system and boot Win4lin when I want to do
development in VB, VC++, Access or whatever.
YMMV
Cheers,
Doug

When I installed KDE 2.0.1, it sort of gave me problems, because of
dependency issues. I had to search and finally figured out how to install
them using the "nodep" option. Well, anyway, when KDE 2.1 came out, it was
made even more difficult to install. The "nodep" option failed, and I
could not install it properly, so I gave up.
I went to upgrade GNOME, and I was directed to Ximian GNOME. There was an
installer, and it was a breeze. I mean, it was so easy and clean that I
could hardly believe that it was for Linux.
All applications, and I mean, *all* applications, should be so easy to
install. The GNOME team deserves a round of applause. I hope this sets a
new standard for future to come.

When you right click and get the pop up menu does it state the correct values for
TV norm and Video source?
And can you change the pixsize and have it effect the size on load?

What version are you using, 3.37? When my input line looks like:
[defaults]
#norm = ntsc
#input = tuner
input = Television
capture = over
xawtv says on load...
config: invalid value for input: Television

I haven't heard of anything yet but would also be interested in finding
something as I like to listen to "Artbell's Coast to Coast AM" but don't

Multisession CDs? It's not quite as easy as tar + nst0 , but it can be
made to work. Use find and tar (or cpio, or whatever) to create an
archive of whatever's changed, and call the archive something based on
the date. Then burn it to CD using the -multi option (if it's the first
session on the CD) or use something like the following if it's the
second (or higher) session:
TRACK=`cdrecord -msinfo`
mkisofs -r -J -C $TRACK -M /dev/scd0 archive-03-13-2001.tgz | cdrecord
-multi
Now your tarball will be on the CD. To restore from incremental
backups, you'd untar the full backup, then untar the incremental backups
in the normal way. Make sense?
If not, there are some utilities at freshmeat.net that claim to have a
better way of doing things. Search for "CD Backup". HTH,

Don't think there's a binary. The freetds source is *NOT* tough to
compile, at least on an x86 machine. Face your fear of compiling; it's
not like you're compiling a kernel or glibc2.1 or anything that could
seriously screw up your system. You want to stay a raw newbie forever?
The FAQ on the freetds site explains what to do; read it and follow the
directions.
Also, when it comes time to "make check", look in the freetds directory
for a file called "PWD". Change the database/username/password values
in there to something that makes sense on the SQL Server you're
connecting to. This will help you avoid unnecessary pain, and it wasn't
documented anywhere. HTH,

The K6 series is theoretically equivalent to a Pentium MMX, except for
the K6-3+, which has the same instruction set as an Athlon. Athlons are
roughly equivalent to a PPro/PII/PIII. Cyrix is to be avoided, but
their older stuff is really a 486 in disguise while their newer stuff is
similar to a Pentium.
IIRC, gcc does not use processor-specific instructions for things higher
than a Pentium. The main difference between i586 and i686 should be in
the scheduling of instructions. 3DNow, MMX, Katmai, and the instruction
set of the week have to be entered in inline assembly, which many
programmers hate doing. I've only seen a few things (gogo, some xmms
plugins) that have inline assembly at all. After all, some enterprising
person might want to port the code to Sparc, so inline assembly is
non-portable....

Subject: Patching the kernel - more info needed
Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 04:08:32 GMT
I've read the "howto" for the "patching the kernel" in the howto for the
kernel; also have read the man pages. Both do not provide enough info
as nowhere is mentioned the prompt for "file to patch:". It took me a while
to figure out that it meant the *patch* file itself and NOT the file
I want to patch.
I got the "file to patch" prompt about 3 times in trying to patch the
2.4.2 kernel with the patch-2.4.2-ac18 in hopes of fixing my timezone
problem as there is a patch for the timezone stuff. Now, how long
should I expect the patch to run as it is now 4 hrs on my 900 mhz athlon
and still going; is the patch patching the kernel 3 times since I entered
the patchfile name 3 times??? Should I have just press the enter key
when prompted on the 2nd & 3rd times??
Something must be wrong as it is takeing VERY much longer to patch than
to update the kernel from scratch....will probably kill the process after
watching tv....oh, I used "patch -e -p0 -i patch-2.4.2-ac18".
Help!!!????

I really didn't have a particular scanner in mind. Staples had one on

That option is greyed out in my menu. How do I make it an option? Right
now of course All is selected.
In Netscape 4.76 there was an option under Preferences for Mail/News
where u could set how old messages could be before they expired. THere
is no such option in NS 6 (i forgot to mention the version I was using,
just realized that).

"only keyboards and mice" is _nonsense_. The _slickest_ thing I ever
hooked to my machine was a USB Zip drive; it was detected in a moment.

There are some scanners supported; you'll need to pick fairly carefully.

Have you tried changing the clock in BIOS, at boot. I think you can enter

Well, this really is not a KDE v. Gnome situation - the issue lies with with
the RPM format... I used a debian system once, and was very impressed with
how dpgk (apt-get was just starting to come out) was able to tell me about
all the dependencies, and offered to install all of the packages that
were required. I've often had some rather inappropriate things to say about
RPM because of this. I just spent a good chunk of time trying to install
the newer packages for gnome that galeon requires... ALl I had were similar
packages, but they were too old. However, earch ROM just says it needs
file xyz, but neglects to say where to find it. Aggravating! At least
that is where rpmfind.net comes in very handy... :-)
Just my two bits worth...

Your not alone Kris, I am a Redhat user that misses the
Ease-of-Use (TM) that Debian's dpkg system offered, IMO rpmfind.net is
a poor substitute.
BTW: Anyone know where I can get dpkg as an RPM or tarball?
