This is from shieldsup.grc.com, who test your machine's security (part of it, anyway),
but they do it only
at your request. I infer you visited their web site and requested that they test your
machine. I suppose
someone could have tricked them into testing your machine, but I do not know how to do
it myself, nor do I
know what good it would do them.

> Oct 27 22:13:30 analog in.telnetd[681]: connect from 216.78.184.172
This is from adsl-78-184-172.mco.bellsouth.net
Is bellsouth.net your ISP? It might be OK, but it is not smart to use telnet as it is
too insecure. You
might wish to use ssh instead. It is a good idea to disable telnet altogether if you
possibly can. You
should consider turning it off in your /etc/inet.conf file.

>such file or directory
This is from hunt187-189.optonline.net I do not know who they are, but if you are not
offering ftp
services to the Internet, you might wish to be sure that ftp is disabled in your
/etc/inetd.conf file.

It has to do with the inetd program that tries to check incoming requests and deny
access to all that you
do not like. You should do a man inetd and read how to set it up. It is the first step
at protecting
yourself from hackers on the Internet.

They sure could. All they need do is guess your super-user password (why you should
pick a non-obvious one
and change it from time-to-time, never re-using an old one) and they can do anything
you want. They need
not even guess it if you have ever telnet-ed into your own machine and become
super-user: they could have
sniffed it since telnet sends everything through the Internet in plain text. That is
why using ssh instead
of telnet is so important: it sends everything encrypted.
If the permissions on some of your files are too generous, they would not even have
needed to guess your
super-user's password: any one would do.

I would just make a new one. If you are lucky, your /etc/sendmail.mc file is ok, so
you could just use m4
to generate a new sendmail.cf.
A possiblity is that your machine does not connect properly to the internet. Can you
use something like
Netscape or Lynx to browse the web? If so, that is probably not the problem.

Subject: Sound Blaster AWE64 Value
Date: Sun, 19 Nov 2000 09:32:10 -0500
Hello,
I'm running Red Hat 6.1 (kernel 2.2.12-20) on a Pentium II 450 system
(with a Windows 98 partition), and I'm having trouble getting my
Soundblaster AWE64 Value sound card to work. Here's the situation:
1) I know that the card works, because it's fine under Windows.
2) I ran sndconfig, and during the sound test, the card worked. My
hardware resources appear to be assigned properly. Interrupt 5 is
assigned to soundblaster, dma 1 to soundblaster 8, dma 5 to soundblaster
16, io range 0220-022f to soundblaster, and 0330-0333 to MPU401-UART.
3) When I'm booting Linux, I get the following error message:
Loading sound module
OK
Loading midi module
No AWE synth device is found
post-install /lib/modules/2.2.12-20/misc/awe_wave.o FAILED
Sound: device or resource busy
4) The documentation for the Soundblaster AWE card says that the
following lines should be in /etc/conf.modules:
alias midi awe_wave
post-install awe_wave /usr/bin/sfxload /usr/synthfm.sbk
options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
My conf.modules is the same, except that instead of /usr/synthfm.sbk, I
have
/etc/midi/GU11-ROM.SF2
5) When I cat /dev/sndstat, I get no entries in the "Installed Drivers"
or "Card Config" fields. When I cat /proc/modules, it lists the awe wave
module as "unused."
It seems to me that the card is configured properly, but for some reason
the module is failing to load. Given the error message I get during
boot, I suspect the culprit is the GU11-ROM.SF2 file, which is in my
post-install script instead of synthfm.sbk. Here are my questions:
1) Does anyone know where I can find synthgm.sbk.gz (which the
documentation identifies as the zipped version of synthfm.sbk)? I'd like
to try this file in conf.modules to see if it makes a difference.
2) Does anyone know what else could be causing this problem?
Thanks for any feedback,
Paul

Hmmm... Sometimes BIOSs feck up... Try turning off the power, pulling the
battery, replacing it and powering up again...
This resets the BIOS to factory settings and may give it the boot up the
backside it needs...
If not, you may need another disk, but even then the old one may still be
usable.
(My BIOS has stopped recognising my second hard drive, but it still works
fine in linux. If you DO put in a second drive, you could probably keep your
old one as a slave.)

Well, for one thing, /dev/hda isn't a partition, it's the full hard drive.
Try mount /dev/hda1 /mnt
(Or whatever partitions you use).

It's a rescue floppy. It uses RAM as its file system anyway.
Nothing in the floppy will refer to the hard disks because everyone has
different hard drive partitions.

Thanks Topaz. It was probably an error on my part that corrupted the app
somewhere due to the fact fact that it takes so long to load and that I'm
not quite used to the single-click launching of application shortcuts having
just migrated from the Win9x platform.

I'm running LPRng-3.6.23 & lprngtool 1.1.1, I have an HP500C printer
which is connected to an HP Jetdirect EX (J2382B, not upgradable). I
have my print jobs working correctly for PCL files (raw) and straight
ASCII (just text, formfeeds properly and no stair step).
I found the filter master-filter and I'm trying to setup the printer
so it will correctly handle the various file types automagically. Does
anyone have an example of how they setup the filters? I've tried
searching the net but I keep getting the setup for postscript printers
(and no info on setting up the filters).
Thanks

Yes, I meant ports 20 and 21. I would be interested in your ipchains
firewall script.
BTW, I'm using WS-FTP pro on windos and based on the information in
your post, I have turned off "Passive Transfers". My FTP now comes
closer to working, but what now occurs is that WS-FTP issues a "PORT
192,168,0,12,14,223" command which gets a response of "500 Illegal PORT
Command ! Failed port". I haven't used command mode FTP in years, So I
don't recall what the PORT command is doing. My firewall is providing
NAT and my internal network is a 192.168.0.nnn network.
Thes sad thing is that I have a Windows 2000 server as well as my Linux
server. When make it my FTP server, things work, except that I don't
get the desired result of accessing my Linux system.

Ok I have just got Mandrake 7 and booting up from the CD. Goes through Ok
but does not detect my mouse, a Trust serial mouse that as far as I know is
intellimouse compatible. Thought Oh well just carry on & sort out later and
install using the keyboard. When I come to the partition section I can not
select the part of the drive I want though as I need to click the commands
with the mouse & there appears to be no way to get to them with the
keyboard.
Tried going through Expert route & select mouse there trying just about
every kind of mouse there & different com selections, still nothing. Tried
a second mouse, bog standard Logitech 3 button mouse with serial adapter &

Well it looks like something went wrong when I setup the print queue
for my printer to use postscript. I setup another printer and it works
on that one. Weird! I'm just going to remove the non-working entry.

Subject: lvm and quotas

Hi,
I just set up a samba server with SuSE Linux 7.0 and lvm. Everything was
fine till the point I wanted to activate the quota.user with edquota.
There are no options to regulate quotas.
The underlaying filesystem is ext2, because reiserfs does not support
any quotas, as far as I know.
Is there a problem with ext2/lvm and quotas??
Thx Benjamin

Though if the process is somewhere blocked in IO, it may not receive the
signal. It doesn't happen often.

Subject: HELP: Netscape Download file location.
Date: Sun, 19 Nov 2000 17:02:20 +0000
When I download files using Netscape I cannot find them in the system. I
have configured Netscape's "Download Files To" directory but the files do
not appear there. I have tried "Find FIles" for the whole system but still
the files cannot be found.
Using Netscape I recently downloaded all the Security Update files for
Netscape from the Caldera FTP site - where do I locate these files on my
system so that I can instal them?
