I don't think you need to insmod mpu401. Here's what I have in my
conf.modules, and my OPL3/SA3 sound works just fine:

# Sound
alias char-major-14 opl3sa2
pre-install opl3sa2 modprobe "-k" "ad1848"
post-install opl3sa2 modprobe "-k" "opl3"
options opl3sa2 io=0x370 mss_io=0x530 mpu_io=0x330 irq=5 dma=0 dma2=1

My graphic card is a S3 Virge GX2 AGP 4Mb and my linux is Mandrake

I have some problems which are caused by my graphic card (a bug)
When I'm under X after few minutes of use the screen changes and I can
only see vertical lines.
I can do nothing else then reboot the computer (by using the reset
button).
When the computer restart I have some problems 'cause the drives havn't
been unmounted.

Does anyone knows any fix for this graphic card ??

Thanks

Try searching for a call to setfont in your startup
scripts and changing the font it sets to one
which is for an 80x50 screen.

You can change the default locations where the loader looks for
shared libraries by editing /etc/ld.so.conf and then running
ldconfig. This is a system wide setting and will affect all
users. Alternatively the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable
should work in the way you expected it to, though there
are a couple of points to note. LD_LIBRARY_PATH is ignored
for programs which are setuid or setgid. If your program
is in aout format then the relevant environment variable
is LD_AOUT_LIBRARY_PATH. Check the man page for ld.so
(the dynamic linker) for details.

Redhat have a nice walkthru for upgrading Redhat 5.2 to a 2.2.x kernal
http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/docs/kernel-upgrade/kernel-upgrade.html
I was able to succesfully upgrade my kernal following this walkthru after
owning Linux for only a week. The only real hard part I found as a newbie
was what options to configure into the kernal.

Please help!
I have a RedHat 5.1 installation with Apache running. Almost
everything is working fine except the scripting. I am probably more
than usually thickheaded because even though I have read through a
mass of Usenet messages and the manual pages I cant't get it to work!

I have my scripts in a directory:
/home/httpd/html/agiusa/cgi

The script file itself is set to executable for all.

In the html file /home/httpd/html/agiusa/register.shtml this is how
the script is accessed:
<FORM ACTION="cgi/registrera.cgi" METHOD="POST" >

The /etc/httpd/conf/access.conf contains these access control lines:
<Directory /home/httpd/html/agiusa/cgi>
AllowOverride None
Options ExecCGI
<Limit POST>
allow from all
</Limit>
</Directory>

The result in the browser is:
The requested method POST is not allowed for the URL
/agiusa/cgi/registrera.cgi.

Why is the POST method not allowed when I use the script from the
form???

I suspect you have a devices' resource conflict, but anyway, if you know
all the IRQ, DMA, and IO values for your sound card you can manually enter
it in using kernelcfg. It worked for me.

Well, I've had both ADSL and cable modems, and the answer is yes, they
all work, but then again they may not. :-)

Really there isn't a single answer to whether ADSL or cable works,
because it really depends on how the service provider has setup their
service. For instance, I was getting ADSL through Bell Canada in
Ontario, Canada. That particular service started out as a splittered
ADSL technology, running at a blazing 2.2Mbps down/1.1Mbps up (that's
about 280kB/s down and 140kB/s up), and they assigned you static IP's.
They then switched to a brand-new non-splittered ADSL technology, which
was cheaper, but offered lower performance (1.0Mbps down/128kbps up)
and they assigned the IP's through DHCP. Now that 1.0Mbps technology is
switching to PPPoE in place of DHCP. Although there are lots of builtin
support for static IP and even DHCP in Linux, however PPPoE is brand
new technology, and the Linux users are scared that they won't have a
PPPoE stack for Linux, even though the provider has promised that they
have drivers for PPPoE for Linux (unsupported, of course).

Oh, and nowadays I'm on a 3.0Mbps down/500kbps up cable modem offered
through Rogers cablevision. They are using DHCP IP assignment scheme.

So your only question should be whether you're going to be getting a
static IP or a DHCP IP.

I advise you read the README documentation in the kernel source tree and
the KERNEL-HOWTO, this is one of the most essential and basic areas you
need to understand in order to optimize your install. You really must
learn kernel optimization and configuration/installation. I also
believe that there is a man page for lilo.conf or just lilo that covers
the options you need to setup, done properly you will have the choice at
boot to select your old setup or the new setup just in case the new one
won't run.

There's not much call for usage of MMX within the core kernels of most
operating systems, neither Microsoft nor Linux. The MMX features are
mostly for the use of applications programs that do a lot of graphics,
and their libraries.

Subject: premature end of script headers????

I have a script /home/httpd/html/agiusa/cgi/registrera.cgi which won't
run on my Linux RH5.1 system for some reason. When I call it from a
form on my html page it returns an error and the errorlog shows this:

[Sun Aug 15 23:17:55 1999] access to
/home/httpd/html/agiusa/cgi/registrera.cgi failed for 192.168.0.30,
reason: Premature end of script headers
exec of /home/httpd/html/agiusa/cgi/registrera.cgi failed, reason: No
such file or directory (errno = 2)

The first entry (premature end of script headers) I have no clue
whatsoever to why it appears.
The second entry (no such file) is even more mysterious because I am
editing and changing this exact file all the time!! It is absolutely
there!

What is happening here??

PS: So far I have not been able to run ANY script file at all on my
linux system, all kinds of access errors were happening. This error
above was shown only after I uncommented this line in the srm.conf
file:
AddHandler cgi-script .cgi
and added:
AddHandler cgi-script .pl
in order to test if this might be of help. Apparently it made the
scripting move one step ahead at least....

Install Linux on your base machine twice. On the first installation,
install everything as you want it. On the second installation, install
enought that you can
mount the first installation on /mnt
   mkisofs on /mnt
burn the isofs on a CD

incorrect. pgcc is indeed a modified version of the gcc C compiler
modified to produce pentium optimized code. instead, sounds like he's got
a corrupt rpm database.

But the possibility of abuse may be a good reason for leaving
capabilities out of other computer languages, it's not a good reason for
leaving capabilities out of Perl.

I've find it: I've just recompiled the kernel enabling the "Win 95 bug
fixes" in the smbfs options.

Now everything works ok.

The printer works, driver is already in gs, should
already be compiled in for you.

Though, I don't quite know how RH sets up the printer.

Did you install leafnode or some news server?

If you had only posted it in alt.test I would have never seen it. And I guess a
two line test from someone who does good things in this group by posting many
good answers is ok (I've seen other posts of yours). What I hate the most is all
those people who post a question, then never ever read the news again! I answer
so many questions to people who don't care about the answers anyways, wasting
precious time and bandwidth.

Anyways, thanks again! Hopefully my next post will be with slrn.

Looks like this guy is stepping up his spam to many of the newsgroups I
read! He/She/It was only spaming about once a month but I guess that was
not enough.
