yes I use it on a 486 dx/4 16mb ram..

    please have at least 16mb ram.

gnome/ kde will be slow.

if your game try peanut linux (has kde 1.x in it) 150mb needed
tiny linux (based on slack 3 or 4)

redhat 5 and 6 will install if you have a bigish (400mb) hard drive for your
dated computer.

I list these because I have sucseeded in running tiny and redhat 5 and 6 on
it.
I am trying peanut now but the install is tricky.

it is faster than say win98 on the same computer.

goto www.linux.org

see distrobutions.

probably goto specialty section as the rest tend to be big or pentium
optimised.

Well, I just upgraded from 2.2.13 to 2.4.2 and I am pretty happy, but I
did it because I needed to compile driver support into /a/ kernel to solve
a problem. I figured why not upgrade as long as I am compiling at
all. Somebody once said, "There is much to be said for a working box."

> I have already tried to do this and I am running into difficulty.

I have binutils-2.9.1.0.25 and modutils-2.1.121 and I had no
problems, yet...

I never read the changes file... I am running Slackware 7.0 and maybe
someone is gonna totally flame me, but you should be fine.

I am not sure what is going wrong in your case, but I'll try to help you
by telling you exactly what I did. This is what /I/ did so pls don't
anybody flame me =) I ran all these as root, not running X. Commands are
in ''. Before you do the last step, make sure you have some sort of
emergency boot disk.

1) get source (linux-2.4.2.tar.gz) from www.kernel.org or mirror

2) place in /root (README said not /usr/src/linux)

3) 'gunzip linux-2.4.2.tar.gz'

4) 'tar xvf linux-2.4.2.tar' (yes 3 and 4 coulda been 1 step =)

5) make these links:
'ln -sf /root/linux/include/linux /usr/include/linux'
'ln -sf /root/linux/include/asm /usr/include/asm'

6) 'cd /root/linux; make menuconfig' (This is probably the most tedious
step. Know your hardware well, or use defaults at first... Also, try
alt+Fx to switch to different consoles, log in, and type stuff like
dmesg|less to give you hints as you are going along.)

7) 'make dep'

8) 'make bzImage' (This will create the kernel binary. If you
succed, you will have /root/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage, yay!!)

9) From here on in, I assume that you are using LILO, it is installed
on your Master Boot Record (MBR), your bootable partition is /dev/hda1,
and would like to have the option to boot your old kernel. Use your
favorite editor and edit /etc/lilo.conf to look something like mine. I'll
substitute your 2.2.14 for my 2.2.13 =)

boot = /dev/hda
compact #not necessary
delay = 100 #10 second delay

  #The first image listed is the image LILO will default to. You may want
  #to use the default tag (see man lilo.conf), or simply switch the order.

image = /2.4.2 #this is what I called bzImage that I copied to /
  root = /dev/hda1
  label = Linux-2.4.2 #labels must have >= 1 letter, e.g. not '2.4.2'
  read-only
image = /2.2.14 #this is what I moved /vmlinuz to... see step 10
  root = /dev/hda1
  label = Linux-2.2.14
  read-only

9) 'cp /vmlinuz /2.2.14; cp /root/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /2.4.2'
(your old kernel may be named something other than /vmlinuz. You still
have a bootable system =)

10) '/sbin/lilo' or usually just 'lilo' (This will check lilo.conf for
errors and make the actual changes to the system map file that LILO uses)

Well there you have it, a new kernel in 10 easy and fun steps
;) Cross you fingers and reboot (remember to hit TAB to see a list of
choices at the LILO prompt). I hope this was pretty clear, and that it
helps.

Good Luck,
Andy

Subject: goctave - help building it
Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2001 04:35:04 GMT

I'm attempting to build goctave on my Mandrake 7.2 system. On the first
try, I learned that I needed an include file, gtksheet.h. This is in the
package  libgtk+extra0-devel-0.99.14-1mdk.i586.rpm, which I installed.
The next attempt got through the compile stage okay, but upon linking a
series of "undefined reference" errors appeared, all of which referred to
function declarations appearing in gtksheet.h. I've copied the call to
gcc that does the linking, as well as the first few error messages,
below. All of the *.o files and libraries that appear in the call exist.

Can someone tell me what I'm missing?

Thanks,

try

www.linux.org

see distro section.

mabey zip slack by slackware. built to run of a zip drive ?

probably a distro like redhat that allows you to install via a null modem
link, net card  or similar

see specialty distros toowards bottom of page.

you may need to turn of cache to install it
mabey you can re enable it latter.

try it
I hope that helps.

Using the "times" package will use standard Postscript fonts instead of the

I believe that there is a Windows program, CDClone, that will do the job

The biggest problem that you will have is fitting the distro on
the hard disk.  I have Slackware 7 installed on a 486 DX2, 50Mhz, 16M RAM
using FVWM2 for X. I did a custom install and really trimmed down things,
but I think it was still more than 200 Meg after I finished.

Text mode will not be a problem at all as far as speed is concerned, you
will be pleased. FVWM2 or TWM is a good quick GUI on a system like that
(any others ppl?), but don't expect miracles if you only have 4M RAM =)

Someone mentioned Peanut, and I was going to try that a few weeks back
and replace slack 7. That distro looks to be what i was looking for to
run on the old 486, but I have not used it yet.

Debian will work fine too (I had it running on a 386SX, 4M RAM. Netscape
took 22 minutes to start under TWM, LOL). Debian still uses base
system floppys (7 or 8 of them?) that will get you going with
TCP/IP networking and a sweet FTP package tool.

Forget Redhat 6.x it won't fit on the HD.

All in all, if you can get /any/ distro up and running on a 486, you will
probably be learning a lot more than someone installing on the latest
supported hardware. It will probably be more satisfying too!

Have fun,
Andy

Hmmm...I didn't spot that one there. As long as it only _installs_ off of
a zip disk, that'd be fine. Unfortunately, my zip drive's normal location
is inconvenient to be de/re-attaching the cable constantly.

>probably a distro like redhat that allows you to install via a null

That'll probably be what I need; it seems difficult to get an installation
that'll wipe the existing FAT partition without a CD-Rom. Most of the ones
out there seem to want to co-exist with DOS by living side-by-side or not
even touching it, or they assume you already have Linux installed.

I believe that if your CD was in the CD drive and cd device driver was mapped
to device /dev/cdrom and you did a "dd if=/dev/cdrom of=xyz" command, that
an exact image of the cd would be copied to the file xyz (you have to have
enough disk space for the file of course). Then you could use cdrecord
to copy that image to a fresh cd. You could check that file xyz was a
valid image by using the command:

  mount xyz -r -t iso9660 -o loop /mnt

assuming /mnt was an empty directory, then under /mnt you should a file
system like the one on the CD. You have to have loop devices in your
kernel or as a module to be able to do this though.

it's a special vesion of slackware.

try tombst (found by following links at linux.org ).

it is a emergancy boot rescue disk that will allow removal of fat
partitions.

redhat has no problem with remoing partitions a install time though.

check your bios utils don't require dos to run.

internel and externel cpu cache, memory speed to slow, no shadow ram, make
it a stable as possible.
works on installs on my 486 but isn't needed after.
